Tonics

Is there much difference between tonics and other things that refill deadeye? From what I can tell Jolly Jack's chewing tobacco and Snake oil do exactly the same thing but snake oil costs a lot less. Am I missing something?

Deadeye shielding lasts slightly longer on higher tier tonics. On the contrary, Chewing Tobacco costs the least mathematically. 4 for $6.00 equates to $1.50 per use.

You get 4 for $6? I didn't realise that.

Also chewing tobacco takes a chunk of your deadeye core down.

Are you sure about that?  I go through quite a bit of CT during showdown matches.

Yes, it lowers your deadeye core a small amount

Free chocolate bars FTW. My best friend when it comes to restoring dead eye (not that I use dead eye much, if at all).

I'll just be happy if, for once, I can spawn into a session without my dead eye circle being completely drained.

Reminds me way too much of losing body armor in GTA Online on new login sessions.

Speaking of tonics: anyone know of any better source(s) for horse stimulant than Rathskeller Fork and Twin Rocks?

The Strawberry visitor center - the chest upstairs outside of the first room as well as the chest inside the first room. You'll find a good variety of that kind of stuff.

Yeah as stated, chewing tobacco is the cheapest, but it reduces your core. The real question is what does the core actually do beside add a second or 2 to refill get that next tonic down.  Once, its red it seems to have no noticeable difference.  Maybe someone knows, but explanations available arent simple and often involve pages of known things, and really do not answer my question.  If my dead core is red and ring is bright yellow, what is the consequnce if any?

You can counter the effects of chewing tobacco by eating a Thyme Big Game Meat. The gold core given from this will stop Dead Eye Core loss for awhile.

A full Dead Eye core mostly gives you a bit of cushion in case you're in an intense gunfight you'd rather finish now then be forced to chug another tonic. Very beneficial for Slippery Bastard and Slow & Steady users.

When the cores are red, the bars drain quicker and refill slower when using them. A red deadeye core also makes your aim wobblier and take longer to steady. There’s no reason to fill them completely outside of the marginal safety net it provides. As long as they’re not red, you’re fine.

It makes a massive difference. My headshots are quite consistent now but when my core is in the red I miss quite a few of them. I can be making what looks like a perfect shot but it misses. If you have ever stood there firing shot after shot into someone face and not know why are not dying then now you know why. I've lost count of the number of times I've watched a so called expert sharing their PvP advice on youtube with their deadeye core in the red the whole time.

FWIW, some of the horse stimulant tonics are pretty easy to craft with two pretty common plants (north of Rhodes and north of St. Denis).

I only mention this, as I thought I would never get low on Horse Stimulants, but completely ran out. lol

Anyway, can be handy if you're low but focused on things other than looting.

When is it that you use horse stimulant? I've never used it and can't see when I'll ever need it.

Dont forget that if you eat lots you gain weight. I use cigarettes or cigars to refill dead eye. Has least amount of side effect. Your you loose some stamina core, but I find it not so important as the rest. I eat at most one meat in a game day cycle. Rest of day I eat fruit and veggies to keep my weight little more balanced.

Riding your horse at top speed for really long distances; feeding it certainly helps, but Horse Stimulant really works well to give it another huge boost.

I use the Red Arabian (PS4 freebie), so don't know if that has something to do with needing to replenish its stamina more than other horses?

Another thing that can eventually kill your horse is wading through deep water for long stretches without being able to rest. Riding my horse to the cluster of islands west of Rhodes drains both its health and stamina pretty quickly--even between the two shortest points of land between them.

Ah, that would be why then. I ride the black Arabian with the Nacogdoches saddle and ugly bucket stirrups. I can ride it from one side of the map to the other at full gallop and stamina will still be half full. That horse never gets tired.

^^ Woah(!); do you know if that powerful stamina is mostly from the Black Arabian or the Nacogdoches saddle (or maybe both)?

Either way, I really need to upgrade something. :) Would be great to be able to ride like that across the map.

One reason I say that is (IIRC) you can't use Horse Stimulant on your horse while wading in deep water, so it's "survive or die" with whatever stamina your horse has wading to those islands.

I like using the horse medicine to boost heath - it can(help) save your horse from gun fire in battles or crazy griefers

Amy, I should have quoted  the post I was referring the video- my bad🙃

Most of it from the saddle and stirrups. I know others who use the Foxtrotter with the same saddle and stirrups as me and get the same kind of performance.

Tonics make its associated stat not decrease for a short period of time, the stronger the tonic the longer the effect lasts. A good health tonic for example makes you temporarily invincible since your health won't decrease until you taken enough damage first. The same for your cores as well. As long as the core/bar is yellow its under this effect. Its why the different tonics, bitters and the like are listed as one of four tiers. Tier 4 of course being the most powerful.
