The Tech Endurance Test

Recommended Posts

We all have tech that goes on and on, refusing to die.   This topic is to document mankinds greatest achievement.   Technology that lasts more than 10 years with constant daily use/abuse.

Here is my Microsoft Windows laser mouse v1.0 made in 2006.

I use different mice for specific tasks but this one is my surfing companion, used daily for well over a decade.   The mouse mat does not make the list but it's not far off at 8 years old.

Excellent. I use a Logitech G3 USB mouse from that's from 2008 or 2009 daily. I've been using almost daily (save for the odd overnight/odd out-of-town visit) since about 2011. Unfortunately, I've lost a few keyboards over the years due to drink spillage and in the case of strictly one cheap GearHead keyboard in the early 2010s, poor quality and premature wear.

Right now, I'm also using an old Aron PS/2 keyboard that looks like it's from the late 1990s or early 2000s based on the characteristic yellowed white plastic finish. The only problem is occasionally some keystrokes will fail to register through due to dirt buildup inside and I'll need to tilt it over and whack the dirt out from the switches. My monitor right now is an old Acer X223w from 2007 that I saved from the curbside a few years ago.

If you cover the yellowd plastic in hydrogen peroxide, wrap it in cling film and leave in direct sunlight for a few hours that will get rid of yellowing.  It will look like new.   Plus it won't effect the lettering on the keys.

My keyboards last 2 or 3 years.  The last one I bought was steel series and that lasted a little over a year, £90 gone.   I refuse to make the same mistake again and got a cheap led, mechanical keyboard for £20.  I wear headphones regularly and they last about a year.    :*(

Never understood how people can kill headphones like this. I gym 6 days a week, travel extensively for work and generally just lob my cheaper in-ears in whatever soft pouch I have handy and they never break. I'm some cases they've been through the washing machine and survived.

Wonder if it's a brand thing?

I had an HP Pavilion CPU from the 90s still working and I sold it a year ago; it was my second desktop computer and I have somewhere the mouse and keyboard (I rarely use them when I don’t have batteries in my wireless keyboard) because my father sold the screen.

Same and I've tried a lot of brands like Bose, Sennheiser, Audio-technica, Beyerdynamic, Grado Labs, etc... they touch every weather.

MY FW900 lasted almost exactly ten years, from ~2004 to October 3, 2014 (Yes, dammit! It was a sad day), and it was used when I acquired it, as part of a five-monitor corporate surplus purchase. I had sold four and ended up with a small profit. After it died I was forced to downgrade to an old 22" FP1350X, as FW900 prices were insane by then.

That died almost a year and a half ago and I've been increasingly angry about the state of the display industry ever since.

Had an original Game Boy when I was a kid. Dropped it down the toilet by accident. Let it dry out overnight in the hot press and it worked again with no problems.

Also had this Sony CD/Radio/Tape deck playing for about 16 years. Not a bother on her. Was taking too much space in my old small apartment. Eventually I sold it off. Felt bad saying goodbye to it but it got huge use over the years.
