Grand Theft Auto Online Update Chronology

I'm gonna try to make the Online have somewhat of a story. From a poor two bit street rat, to a billionaire business (wo)man who saved the world from nuclear destruction. Pretty cool how far we come, huh? This is my personal theory on how the timeline goes.

 

Notes: The order in which the updates came out aren't necessarily the chronological order. For example, Import/Export came out after Bikers, yet Bikers is after the single player (or at least after "Mr. Phillips") while a certain portion of Import/Export is before single player. Similarly, Lowriders came out after Heists, when doing the other way around would make more sense. Also the years in which the updates came out don't matter either. Going by that logic, Heists would be set in 2015, which wouldn't make sense. Gunrunning is the only update that explicitly states that it's 2017, so that's how far we are in the timeline in my opinion. Lastly, R* never stated exactly how many months Online is before single player. It could be 3 months, 6 months, 10 months, maybe even a year!  I'm gonna use the dates "2012", "2013", "2014-2017" and "2017" for simplicity sake.

 

2012

- Online begins.

- Online Protagonist is introduced to Lamar and Gerald.

- Gerald and Lamar contact missions.

- Online Protagonist is introduced to Simeon.

- Simeon contact missions.

- Lowriders Update.

- Online Protagonist is introduced to Trevor and Ron.

- Trevor and Ron contact missions.

- Madrazo contact missions.

- Online Protagonist is introduced to Lester.

- Lester contact missions.

- Heists Update.

 

2013

- Executives and Other Criminals, Further Adventures In Finance and Felony, and Import/Export.

- Beginning of the Single Player Story.

- Extorting Cars to Jay Norris.

- "Friend Request".

- Extorting Cars to Molly Schultz.

- "Legal Trouble".

- Ending of the Single Player Story. Ending C is the canon ending.

 

Between 2014 and 2017

- Import/Export: Special Vehicle Work.

- Bikers Update.

- Arena War Update.

- Smuggler's Run Update.

- Diamond Casino And Resort Update.

- After Hours Update.

 

2017

- Gunrunning Update.

- Doomsday Update.
