Loot boxes?

How did feel about the comparison to this Casino update to loot boxes? Giving “kids”   Gambling addiction.  Disclaimer: I not saying it does I’m just asking a question?

They may be hiding behind the age limit of the game.  Either way, the list of countries that ban gambling have players in those places pissed they can't "play" gambling in GTA

B*llocks. The comparison is open and vague. There are comparisons, but firstly GTA doesn't offer anything to chance that isn't otherwise available by other means, nor is the gambling anything other than a feature and sideline. It isn't mandated to attain what you want nor an integral part of the game. As for 'kids' then comfort the child for their loss (of a game and absense of good parents) while repremanding the worthless guardians. Finally what are kids taught in sex ed. Beat a hooker, make a profit. GTA is for adults for a reason, yet sometimes I suspect children are better guided by the game than the half wits that sired them.

I dunno. While not as random as slots or roulette, betting has been a part of GTA Online for years in the form of races. I don't think it's an issue, and it certainly isn't as predatory as loot boxes (or surprise mechanics if you prefer)

Edit:  I was pretty close.

Kids shouldn't be playing this game; it's R/18 Rated for a reason.

It's also not really necessary to play the games to get chips. You get 1000 every day, 5400 for collecting all the playing cards and 5000 for each Casino job you do in freemode. Honestly, that's perhaps the biggest flaw in this update - it has little longevity since most of what is locked behind chips isn't worth getting anyway.

In the meantime in this game you already can commit murder, rob someone, commit various traffic felonies, order someone's murder, smuggle drugs and counterfeit money etc. and it seems NONE of those things are illegal at all across this God forsaken planet...

Everyting about "gamble" blocking in certain (a good number!) countries smells like SJW to me....

This update has nothing in common with loot boxes lol

More so supported by the fact that you cant actually spend Shark Card money at the casino apparently, you can only use the money youve made from jobs/grinds.

Always been one of the mind that the emphasis is on the parents/guardians to get educated about their kids gaming habits and gaming itself with how these things can get. (Especially mobile games).

If not because of things like suitability for age, gambling, or loot boxes. But for the simple fact the whole lot is all online and very open to all sorts really. From bad players and trolls to the aforementioned issues that can come of it like an addiction. (Of which, just the gaming itself could be an issue with some as their addiction).

I get it's an 18 game, but most of these issues (loot boxes) are in games made for a younger audience too. Game's like Fortnite or FIFA (or whatever, I don't play those) aren't a GTA with its subject matter after all, often have hostile players, bad sports and/or bad or addictive practices and it's often parents bitching when they overlooked these things (again, mobile games are really bad for this) and see a fee/bill has soared or their kids start to become troubling, lol.

But I've always felt, much like an R rated movie in the states, if informed parents are ok with it, it's up to them. Parents can't afford to just let kids blindly do whatever, but should be involved more to understand themselves, define limits, and talk with their children as to why not instead of just making it more tempting by just saying 'no'

Learn together too, great times. Me and my lad have such a laugh. :)

Those are issues with loot box and pay wall games where the mechic is exploitative in the vein of money for progression. You're right there are games were this mechanic exists that are very much targeted to audiences under 18 (star wars battle front 2 being an example), but gambling is explicitly restricted to 16 and over in some countries and 18 and over for certain games and content (casino games). Different countries and regions have differing age restrictions but 18 is the general minimum. The connection was made, and rightly so, that where some games use the loot box as a garnish of needless and nice content, too many put the mechanic front and centre in an expoitative manner that would cost money.

I mean, some of this is down to parenting - parents who blindly say no and don't get involved with their kids are just as bad as parents that say yes and don't give a sh*t, in my opinion.

That said, while I still don't think under-18's should be playing this game anyway, both for their own good and for everyone else's, in some cases, I don't feel GTA is nearly as predatory with it's business practices as some of the other games - Fortnite, FIFA, Destiny 2. There's serious elements of FOMO-marketing going on in these games which are, for the most part, aimed at under-18's. Thankfully some of them are moving away from this, but comparatively GTA has moved away from the "limited time items" that we used to have (Lurcher, Franken Stange, the Skull Bike etc.) and yes, while we now have actual gambling in the game, let's not forget that we've had actual gambling in the game from launch in the form of pre-game betting. That and, despite what people say, it is super easy to make money in GTA Online now, with so much stuff to do, almost all of which is pretty fun.

At the end of the day, you don't have to gamble to get chips to buy items that cost chips. If you choose to gamble, that's your business but it's an underlying issue on your end if you feel the need to gamble rather than put in a little time working towards these things.

Not really the same as loot boxes. I suppose the slot machines are and the wheel, but the other games have a fair bit of strategy to them. You can get screwed over, but you can win if you know how to play the different games correctly and make the best moves.
