The Real % Breakdown of IV

The past several months I've been writing up threads looking at how each GTA game breaks down in terms of percentage. ie. How many things in the game reward percentage, how much each thing is worth, etc. because I was plain curious about it after all these years. I've done this for every 3D era game now so if you'd like to see those you can look them up on their respective boards.

IV is one of two games along with SA that you can easily find this info for online, so it may not be as mysterious as the others, but there are still some interesting aspects to it people might not be clear on.

The most interesting thing about IV's % structure is that it's the first game in the series not to reward the same amount of % for every objective you complete. In III for instance there were 154 objectives and every single one was worth the same amount of %, approximately 0.649% each. In IV each type of content was grouped together into a 'class' of content that add up to a unique amount relative to the others.

You'll see what I mean here. Story Missions in IV are worth 60% of your 100%. So they decided missions would be worth 60%, then divided 60 by the number of missions. There are 86 that count for % and each time you complete one you're rewarded with ~0.698% (0.6976744186). The game displays your total % to two decimal places, and rounds up accordingly. For example, after finishing 'The Cousins Bellic' you'll see the game says you have 00.70%. It's also worth noting that when it comes to missions that have two parts like 'Out of the Closet' and 'Final Interview' you need to complete both parts to get your mission point.

Stranger missions are worth 5% total and there are 10 strangers that count, so you get 0.5% for each. To get your percentage here you have to complete every available mission for those characters. You are not given % for each encounter. Of course Ivan, Clarence, Cherise, and Jeff are the ones who don't count.

:10 Strangers - 5%:

1 - Brian, 3 missions
2 - Mel, 1 mission
3 - Badman, 1 mission
4 - Ilyena, 1 mission
5 - Hossan, 1 mission
6 - Pathos, 2 missions
7 - Sara, 2 missions
8 - Marnie, 2 missions
9 - Eddie, 2 missions
10 - Gracie, 1 mission

Here's where the unfortunate stuff starts. The drawback to IV's % system is that you often get very small amounts of % for things that take a lot of work. You only get your % here after completing the entire 'class' of content. Similar to how III and VC would only give you single objective point for the entire group of Rampages or Stunt Jumps. Vice City forcing you to do 35 Rampages and 36 USJs for a measly 0.649% each was especially cruel. I would say hunting down 200 pigeons for 2.5% is worse, since in every 3D era game but SA and Advance you would get a point every time you found ten collectibles.

:1 set of 9 Assassination Contracts - 2%:

:1 set of 200 Pigeons - 2.5%:

:1 set of 50 Unique Stunt Jumps - 2.5%:

:1 set of 10 Drug Deliveries - 2%:

:1 set of 9 Street Races - 2%:

:1 set of 10 Car Theft Emails - 2%:

:1 set of 30 Car Theft Texts - 2%:

:1 set of 30 Most Wanted (10 on each island) - 2.5%:

:1 set of 20 Current Crimes - 2.5%:

Friend Activities are worth 5% each and there are 3 friends that count. Dwayne and Roman are the two that do not. To get your % here you have to do every available activity for the friend, and I've listed them. You get ~1.67% for completing each friend's list.

:3 sets of Friend Activities - 5%:

1 - Jacob (Darts, drinking, eating, pool, show, strip club)
2 - Brucie (Boating, bowling, drinking, eating, heli ride, show, strip club)
3 - Packie (Bowling, darts, drinking, pool, show, strip club)

You also get 5% total for unlocking the abilities for each of the three friends. The abilities for the three required friends are unlocked at 75% Like and reward 1.67% each just like activities.

:3 Friend Abilities - 5%:

1 - Jacob, guns
2 - Brucie, chopper
3 - Packie, bombs

And finally the four games you can play count for 5% total, of course worth 1.25% each. You must win to get %.

:4 Games - 5%:

1 - Bowling (Full game)
2 - Pool
3 - Darts
4 - QUB3D (High Score)

So that's IV. Pretty simple list compared to the 3D era games since things are grouped together more. This game really makes you work for your %, pigeons alone can take several hours for that measly 2.5%. I'll be posting the breakdown/analysis for the episodes soon. Those are a little more interesting since they have smaller content pools, resulting in some very high value objectives. Whoever reads, thanks for reading.
