KingAJ032304 Posted October 8, 2021 Share Posted October 8, 2021 (edited) So I've been playing GTA IV for the last few days and decided to change my rating from 8.5 to a solid 9, which is VERY impressive as I don't grade easily. There's a lot of reasons I'm rasing it to that, but it wanted GTA IV to be in a whole different league than any of the 3D universe games as I simply just prefer it that much. I also decided to play VC and well... I actually like the story even LESS now lol(I might go as far to say that the story might actually be half-decent, or decent at best, maybe people's liking of the story is a psychological feel? Not sure but I'll give it another chance) buuuut... I actually like the city, music, vibe and characters better. Tommy I'm... mixed on. He still feels like a stereotype that fulfills a fantasy that people place on the game. Like you can say "oh Tommy is soooo cool, he takes no sh*t." In fact the ENTIRE GAME feels like that, it's actually probably Dan/Sam's worse original work from GTA III-V (not including the spinoffs) tbh and is really just a vehicle to do/feel a combination of all the 80s stuff and movies (the ratio of completely original and inspiration is the most off in this title bar none, even the name "Tommy" is... yeah, however this seems to be EXACTLY what people like about VC which is just a core disagreement of mine) buuuut... I actually am doing it AS WELL MYSELF which is NOT what I was doing before! I didn't say this but 80s is my least favorite era from the 60s-2010s, only since it feels really tacky for what people exaggerate the highlights of. Like REALLY tacky. But I was determined to see the beauty of the game and my liking towards is still increasing by the minute so my semi objective rating for this game balances out to like an 8 or 8.25. VC is like all glamour but the substance is IN the glamour lmao. I've finally played TBOGT and I truly think this game's story and possibly characters are actually the most underrated in any gta game. Luis Lopez is a dry protagonist that somehow mostly works and I hope to see him again but improved and more independent/thinking for himself. Same rating as before overall. GTA SA I'm going to replay after GTA VC, but I think to be most objective in the way I grade these games, I might temporarily lower it to a 9.25. GTA V is lowered to a 9 before I play it again. So GTA IV/V are a 9. GTA SA is a 9.25 (As for Saints Row 1/2 if any of you care, I'll lower Saints Row 1 at 9.375 and Saints Row 2 at 9.375 as well). The fact that none of these games are at 9.5 means that there s SO MUCH that these games can learn off each other and if you were to take the best parts of what have been established and add nothing new, then we can end up with a 9.75-9.9+ Will we though? Nice catch and great movie comparison. Each game had a very distinct and unique feeling to it, which is highly impressive considering how similar they are. Jimmy Muffins Posted November 27, 2021 Share Posted November 27, 2021 GTA 3 - 6.5/10. A ground-breaking game at the time but it hasn't aged very well. All of it's successors managed to top it. Not a bad game but far from the best in the series. Vice City - 8/10. Excellent game. Story wasn't anything crazy but it was good enough and the setting is arguably the best in the series. Gave us a voiced protagonist, bikes, interiors, purchasable properties/assets and just more things to do. San Andreas - 9/10. Not perfect but the closest in the series to perfection. Story was good, characters were good, map was the best in the series, has more activities and missions than any other game in the series, massively improved controls, added planes and more vehicle types, added vaulting, gang wars, plenty of secrets, best cheat codes in the series, good variety of weapons, RPG lite features like getting fat/skinny/buff and improving weapon and driving skill, more interiors, ability to customize our character for the first time, ability to swim and dive. It was one of the most ambitious games of the 00's and was undoubtedly the peak of the series. It kept getting better and better until SA and then they stripped it all back in IV. Probably won't get a GTA game as deep as this ever again. GTA IV - 7.5/10. Excellent story and the best physics in the series but the lack of content outside of the main story and the setting keeps it from being an 8 - 9. Still better than GTA 3 but I prefer the setting of Vice City and SA. GTA V - 8/10. Story is not the best in the series but gets more hate than it deserves. World is fairly dead once you beat it but I still prefer it to IV's dark and depressing LC. Game was hindered by multiple protagonists but I still had fun with it. Definitely was overrated at launch but now it has gone in the other direction and gets way too much hate. I have never completed VCS or LCS but I have played them and they are good.
