What are some of the things you're glad didn't get put in GTA IV?

learn fighting style and forget the other. it had no logic. in gta 4 it has been turned into something better with more combat style at once. wait to disable the attack and make a stylish move, it feels much better

Exaggerated gang hostility.

Many people complain about GTA IV having less gang hostility towards the player when compared to the 3D era, but honestly, I like it this way. Hang out nearby a gang member, he'll start feeling harassed and ask you to leave. He'll be triggered if you didn't leave within a few seconds. More believable than the super-gangsters from the 3D era, who somehow recognize the protagonist from a 200 MPH speeding car. GTA San Andreas still had a slightly better balance than the other 3D era titles, though.

I agree when it comes to the somewhat lack of random violence though. It's still not really bad though, because at least the random foot cop chases are still there, and I can recall some fist fights that occurred due to car accidents between NPCs, or sometimes between someone who crosses the road and a driver who accidentally bumps into him.

gta 4 did gang system very good. if you beat someone when gang members are there they are going to try to beat you down and start a gunfight too if you pull out your gun.

Even in San Andreas it's still a bit silly. You could be wearing the gimp suit or something that completely obscures CJ's face (like the bandana) and they'd still attack you. It's not quite as aggressive as GTA III, but the logic still doesn't much sense.

When I first played GTA IV I couldn't even pick out gang members from regular NPCs which made things more intense when I mess with the wrong ones. It would've been nice if there were some more random crimes like car jackings, muggings etc, but the gangs are handled much more realistically and only attack when they feel provoked. Niko's not a gang leader himself so it feels more realistic since he's just a freelance criminal/hired gun so random gang members don't know who he is.

It just adds to feeling that Liberty City is living and breathing and that Niko's just a small fish in a large pond. Not everything revolves around him.

Once you do get the gangs' attention and start messing with them it's so much fun too, one of my favourite things to do. First warning you to leave (and to put your weapon away if you have one out) and then depending on what you do you can have a fist fight or gun fight, they might pull out a knife or bat or a good variety of different guns, different amounts of gang members might join in including rival ones getting annoyed and fighting the others, police can get involved arresting and shooting.

All kinds of drawn out and entertaining scenarios from a good long shootout/stand off between gangs, police and you, to random things like you're having a fist fight with a couple of gang members, police go after them for it so they pull out guns and shoot the police dead, and then turn around and start shooting at you, or maybe a cop tries to arrest a guy for attacking you so they pull out a knife and stab the cop and then get shot dead. Loads of awesome things you wouldn't see in other games can happen because of the complexity of ped behaviour. And the dialogue whether just listening to them talk (usually about smoking lol), the threats and insults they give you when telling you to leave, while fighting or when lying on the ground defeated is all hilarious, and each gang has so much character to it.

It has so many more variables than in other GTAs that there's endless different fights and scenarios that can happen around the city. And then people say there's nothing to do outside the story! Crazy

SA's gangs system was excellent capturing rivalries in street gangs and neighborhoods. IV's gangs were much more thought of and placed well. They're much more hidden in terms of street gangs and try to blend in with NPC's. And IV really doesn't have less gang hostility. It's there. You shoot up the place where there's a gang presence your most likely going to hear gunfire and have up to two or four members after you and in some cases if there's one as a passenger he's going to shoot you from the window while the NPC driver freaks the hell out, lol. These areas are never safe if you think twice and stir up the spoon. If you notice as night certain gang members like the spanish lords carry pistols and Micro Smg's ready for gun fights while there's much more LCPD officers patrolling the streets both on foot and by car compared to day time.

In TLAD it was much more frequent aswell. While playing as Johnny if you out to AOD's club house chances are your going get greeted with pump action shotguns and pistols as a friendly handshake. Not the best place to arm wrestle if your looking for some action :turn: So IV's gang hostility is definitely there. You just have to start some sh*t if you want to notice what really goes down in the ghettos.

@SonOfLiberty Logic does destroy the system doesn't? :p bandanas are automatically gang apparel so it makes sense why rival gangs would bother to hit you up or bust back at you but something ridiculous like the gimp suit doesn't get any points at all when Ballas can recognize a fat CJ wearing a gimp suit driving through Idlewood and start getting shot at, lol. Same with wearing those awful joker glasses. Also car jackings do happen in IV but it's really rare. It happens when a criminal is being chased by a officer on foot then they proceed to steal a nearby vehicle. It's really a rare occurrence because the most of the times they get arrested or just simply run away if they didn't get caught. Wish R* worked more on this cause the majority of the times, the LCPD jack more pedestrians vehicles while your wanted compared to actual street criminals, lmao.

Not really actually, unless you provoke them first. It's weird that TLAD is the only title of the GTA IV saga where gangs don't get harassed by the protagonist for hanging out nearby them for a while, when it's supposed to be the more gang centered game.

Driving nearby the arm wrestling gathering provokes them as well.

My guess would be cause Johnny is a member of the lost MC while Niko is an assassin and Luis a ordianry bouncer. Most of the time they just ignore Johnny or look at him a sec' then walk away...UNLESS......provoked :p

Reminded me of this:

Quote

We were in Brighton Beach one day, walking around, not hearing a single word of English being spoken. Someone saw a safe smashed open down a side street and went to check it out. There were two big guys in tracksuits standing there and, in really thick Russian accents; they asked what the f*ck we were filming. Someone started joking around with them, and the situation diffused, but it made you think how quickly things can go wrong in these areas. We tried to feed this into the way the gangs work in the game. In previous games, they would just attack you; now we get them to come to you and start hassling you in the hope that you initiate a fight.

From this cool interview with IV's art director

https://www.vulture.com/2008/05/grand_theft_auto_ivs_art_direc.html

Awesome how thoroughly they researched and how much thought went into it

Paramedic.. that side mission is boring.. I remember back in the day when I used to play paramedic side mission in GTA 3 to get 100% completion and it was pain in the a** but the vigilante in GTA IV was pretty fun IMO and forget about the things that I said about GTA IV,  I've realised that the game is amazing in terms of storyline, missions, mechanics, physics, details and etc.. I find GTA IV to be more fun than GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas.. but AHH how much I hate the hunger feature.. all the time I tried to complete a mission, I always get hungry and lose health and it's pretty annoying as heck.. I just hope in GTA VI they don't return the hunger feature and paramedic missions.. I just want vigilante side missions, I would prefer quality over quantity instead of quantity over quality that what I would describe what SA is, it had a lot of side missions and a lot of things to do but the majority of them was pretty boring IMO

You're obviously talking about GTA San Andreas, right? It's the only title that has this element.

I agree. No matter how much it happens, it's really frustrating and pointless.

more customization for Niko. IK it sounds weird, but Niko's haircut and his clothing choices reflects his personality imo.

R* could've added bizarre, wacky cosmetics and different hairstyles, but my guess is that they wanted the player to remember Niko for his character rather than his customization. Or something along those lines...

The only thing I'd change about the clothing is replace one of the Perseus stores with another middle class clothing store. Other than that I think GTA IV's selection is spot on and striking great balance with clothes you'd actually want to wear and fitting Niko's style. it even leaves room for some slightly obscure outfits like the scrubs outfit, sanitation worker and Happiness Island shirt without going too overboard and ridiculous.

I'm glad it wasn't clogged up with San Andreas' levels of gimmicky f*ckery.

Also I'm glad IV greatly reduced the annoying stalking mission

I get where he’s coming from though

i assume he doesn’t necessarily dislike anything about the underwater stuff but he means that the underwater does nothing in terms of gameplay and is mostly barren

for me personally, I rarely if ever went under the water in SA so when IV removed it I saw it as a change for the better

Yeah the way I see it is if it means removing anything else at all to make room for it underwater content isn't worth it. If there could be an unlimited amount of content then sure why not, but that isn't the case.

Meh. Swimming underwater in open world games has always felt pointless to me. Normally it's just for collectable hunting and not everyone gives a toss about that so it makes me wonder why developers even bother when they could just use the time and resources more on the developing the city.

I would rather have more explorable interiors any day or something that's actually interesting than miles of underwater caves and coral. Boring,

Also, Liberty City's waters would be pretty polluted and murky, so good luck seeing more than 10m in front of you. And because of that, there wouldn't be a lot of interesting stuff to find, apart from a few wrecks and ruins. No fish, no coral reefs, nothing interesting to see, really.

But on the flip side, it would make the "whale glitch" better.

It's a trolling tactic in Multiplayer:

Spoiler

1) Find a helicopter and an unsuspecting player.

2) Talk about how if you jump into the ocean from a high altitude, you'll be able to see underwater for a bit

3) Then say that Rockstar has hidden a killer whale in a corner of the map, and it can be seen with that glitch.

4) Fly the helicopter with the other player in the passenger seat far into the ocean, until you get the "turn around" text, then tell the other player to jump so he can see the 'whale'.

5) Congratulations, the other player now has about 5 minutes of swimming to do to get back into Liberty City, and 5 more to get killed for getting too far away from the map. he also can't kill himself, as he can't use weapons and can't drown.

The rocket cars and bikes. Most of the weapons and whatnot are a bit unrealistic, but stuff like rocket bikes completely crosses the line and makes the game almost cartoonish. And they exist solely for the players who want to dick around, and have no interest in completing GTAO's storyline.
