Most satisfying Combat and Weapons

Recommended Posts

The Time Ranger

So combat is a staple in most games, what games for you had the most satisfying weapons, moves or combat in general. Here are some of mine.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

The nanoblade, your character has these retractable blades which are used for close up executions but can be upgraded for ranged combat, to shoot out with the force of a gun. It's an instant kill and if an enemy is in front of a wall they're pinned to the wall.

Paul from Tekken has a special punch which takes about three quarters of an enemies health off, it's slow to charge but when you pull it off it's well worth it.

The melee combat in Gta IV, it had it's faults but the ragdoll physics made for fun fights, also the dodge and strike combo is well worth a mention. Luis has the best version with a spinning back kick.

The poke from Worms, just the ultimate troll move.

The combat in Call of Duty has always been very satisfying to me. It's easy to see why it's popular. Some people hate that 'twitchy' combat, but I love it. Always had one or two weapons I've absolutely loved in every COD and just felt 'good' to me.

It's actually why Blackout is my favourite Battle Royale out right now. Every other BR has issues with guns feeling like dog sh*t, especially Fortnite, it's awful.

Hmmm, in terms of melee of the top of my head / games I've played recently:

God of War, Spider-Man and Monster Hunter World. All of them have super satisfying hits but also allow a fair deal of improvisation that allows you to spice it up, or add a bit of flair.

Also Chivalry's combat had it's moments, beheading people with swords, caving in skulls with the two handed hammer, lot of fun even though it was broken as all hell.

In terms of shooting is eh, cause for me shooting can play and feel great but at the same time not be super satisfying, or the shooting can play meh but be super satisfying - RDR2 would be an example of this me, the poor aiming lets it down but the actual guns feel and sound great and hits look and feel like they have impact.

It was a while ago that I played it now but Destiny 2 felt really good to me on PC, Call of Duty these days to me feels very... vanilla I guess? I also play a lot of Warframe which has a gigantic arsenal of weaponry and some of them are awesome, particularly the shotguns. Also this might be surprising to some and the gunplay isn't great in this game but when you get the land the killing shot on the last squad member in Fortnite and loot explodes everywhere, you turn into a kid in a candy shop.

And oh yea, Max Payne 3. Proof that Rockstar, if they wanted to, could make the best third person open world shooter of all time.

Battlefield 4 - Weapons are quite detailed and their sound is good enough for me. Sometimes balance can be questionable tho.

Destiny 2 - It has auto-aim by default, most weapons are reskins and there's so few weapon animations. Yet it's fairly easy to shoot. PVE only.

Killing Floor 2 - Offers big range of weapons from real models to sci-fi toys. Weapons have one of the best animations, but they're not customizable.
DayZ - When it comes to PVP, this game can give you adrenaline rush. Unlike the most FPS games, weapons don't float in front of your face, they are quite well detailed, they can jam and they're loud. One of the best shooting sounds i've heard in video games.

Assassin's Creed has some nice combat. It can be clunky at times in older games, but man is it satisfying when you get rolling and slash a group of enemies.

The Last of Us is the most satisfying for me in terms of melee...

Uncharted 4 in weapons, God I can feel the action in my veins.

Somehow I forgot to mention the Assassin's Creed games. To be honest I prefer the melee in the older games. Have never got used to it in Origins and Odyssey.

I know nothing of weapons but whenever I'm playing a game with a handgun with suppressor, I just love it. I'll end up using it usually stealth-like for most of the game. I know there are other fun weapons but I just love the dull sound of the "pthueup! pthweup"  - two to the head. It's so satisfying.

For shooters I'd say Titanfall 2 had some of the smoothest and most fun gunplay I've ever played.

As for games with melee combat I would have to say Devil May Cry 5.

DMC5 has somewhat of a learning curve but once you get a good grasp of the moveset, its incredibly fun to get high combos. Additionally, the game has three characters with their own unique moveset and abilities. One of them has a robotic arm that can use different abilities such as pulling enemies towards you, slowing down time or even shoot out like a rocket. Another has access to different weapons like a motorcycle that splits into two swords and the last character can control up to 3 demons.

Destiny 2 and Older CoD games have been satisfying, same with Overwatch.

For melee I'd honestly say GTA IV and Sleeping Dogs are satisfying.

Come on son, have you seen Earth Defense Force weapons? Nothing can top that arsenal.

I don't play a lot of Japanese games but their weapons (melee and ranged) are always so much cooler than whatever anyone else can imagine.

The Warriors hands down. Fast, responsive, quick yet brutal and realistic.

You can kick, knee, punch, elbow, headbutt, grab, throw, tackle, counter, dodge, double team and use the environment as a weapon (slamming someones head into a wall or furniture, throwing chairs and general street objects and of course, picking up random weapons from the ground.) Each action is assigned to it's own button so you can actually choose between kicks, punches, etc.

Red Dead 2 finally made an effort to improve the melee system but it still pales in comparison to The Warriors in every way, huge shame. GTA seems too focused on golf and arcade games rather than actually improving core features and mechanics of the game, GTA's melee system is terrible. IV and V.

When it comes to guns though, i'd say Battlefield is pretty solid combat.

  • Worms Armageddon (best turn-based strategy game ever)
  • GTA SA
  • CS1.6 (decent although i don't quite remember being it easy to master for me)
  • Far Cry 2
  • Tekken & Mortal Kombat in general

Insurgency/Day of Infamy (same dev)

Both have outstanding animations and sound design combined with smooth and semi-realistic gameplay.

R* have never really mastered combat in their open world games though I'd say they did do a good job in San Andreas for the time.

However the gunplay in Max Payne 3 is definitely among the best of all time IMO. Incredible.

As for melee I really liked Sleeping Dogs. 2018 God Of War was really satisfying as well.

Far cry games do offer great shooting experiences

Rainbow six raven shield is also amazing in terms of shooting, still play this game, give it a try

As far as melee combat goes then sleeping dogs comes to mind.

Pls note- my opinion is based on strictly pc versions of the abov games

Metro has some pretty satisfying combat. My first impression was it felt clunky, but once you get used to it, something about it is so unique and raw. I really love it.

Sleeping Dogs pulled off some satisfying melee with rewarding combos and specials.

The first MP fps's like Duke Nukem3d and Unreal (1) had satisfying combat because it was new and tense.  Large maps with only a few players so there was a lot of hunting and sneaking.  Getting an RPG in Duke Nukem was the best.  Seeing your friend off in the distance and taking them out with the RPG...priceless.

I always enjoyed Mafia III's gunplay, it felt a little like Max Payne without the slow motion.  Lincoln moved pretty fluidly, navigating cover well and when you shot someone it made an impact.  a bit of brushing up and it would've been an ace of a game to pick up for some mindless slaughtering

Far cry primal has a very good weapons system. the ragdoll linked to weapons is excellent. thus makes the weapons very accurate, and very satifying to use. this is a guy i impaled

Q3ZHbpp.jpg

Ghost recon incredible weapons customisation makes the weapons fun to use too

in Street fighter V Chun Li has a nasty foot punch. she hits fast, and hard

YPnDfEt.jpg

the hunter: call of the wild bows are fun to use too (realism oriented)

Warframe has some of the best combat I've ever seen and it's a FREE game as well. It's seriously so fluid.

gotta agree with OP, hitting someone with Death Fist is satisfying as f*ck

Johnny Cage in MK9 was braindead as f*ck ngl, but holy sh*t was it fun to just spam F3 into ex forceball and just chip people to death, + his combos were swaggy as hell

Max Payne 3 is the best third person shooter ever made hands down if we're talking about straight mechanics, it's damn near perfect and makes me wonder how/why we got the piss poor shooting mechanics we did in V

a vast majority of the weapons in Modern Warfare 2 were fun as f*ck to use even if they weren't exactly 1 to 1 replicas as to how they'd function and/or look/sound irl

it doesn't really count as combat, but hitting people with cars at speed in GTA IV is unrivaled. the satisfying thunk and the euphoria ragdoll hasn't been topped imo

i didn't think i would but i really enjoyed the takedowns in Watch Dogs 2 with Marcus's hackysack thingamabobber. very satisfying.
