And as for Tonya, She's meant to be annoying. Just like characters like Mori. If you hate her that means R* have done a good job of how Franklin's hood friends are annoying/stupid and why he wants to leave.

I have to somewhat disagree here. There's a difference to me between a character who's written on purpose to get under the player's skin as opposed to a character that's simply just not very good. Annoying characters can still be good characters fundamentally. For example I've always found Vlad really annoying in GTA IV, but he's still a good character.

Tonya's annoying not because she's meant to be, but because she has NO redeeming qualities whatsoever. There are countless characters I dislike for vary reasons across every GTA game, but I can always find something about them that redeems in some way. Tonya has none of those things.

I think it would've been better if she showed up later on in another Strangers & Freaks encounter where she's shown to have cleaned herself up. That would've been redeeming. I know I'm drawing comparisons with GTA IV again, but she could've been handled like Brian Meech. When I first met him and he was smacked out I thought he was the most annoying person ever, but then Niko meets him again when he isn't high as a kite and I thought "Hey maybe you're not so bad" and in the third encounter I got a sense of change and that was only three encounters.

@SonOfLiberty

I don't think every annoying character should have redeeming qualities. I mean some people are just pure sh*t. Not everyone can turn "good" again. As for Tonya I think there's no way R* intended us to actually like her. She's just so annoying. No way. But I don't think she's a good character anyways.

True.

If there's one thing we agree one is she's annoying as f*ck. I hate the phone call Franklin makes and she's whacked out of her mind. It's like scraping fingernails down a chalkboard. Arghhh.

Worst part of gta 5 by far! the fact that you have to complete them for 100% is ridiculous tbh I wonder who’s bright idea it was to make a tow truck mission in an open world crime game and add the most insufferable side character ever to make wisecracks while you tow cars.

I just don't get why people complain that you have to do stuff for 100% completion. It's called 100% completion not 90% or 75% completion. If you want to complain about stuff not being optional for the story then sure go ahead but you can't complain about something literally required by the suggested name... of 100% completion. It's supposed to be a side activity in its self, a diversion really.

Yeah it's a sh*tty side activity that literally has no purpose besides to try to flesh out Franklin's non existent backstory think about what u do in the mission you drive to one place to get in a tow truck to drive to another place to pick up a car and then drive back to the impound it was interesting the first time but it's still a boring side mission with boring

dialogue I get not everyone has OCD and wants to get 100% but I'd rather drive a taxi get cash and have that count towards 100% than play this worthless excuse of a sidemission

I thought it fit on well with Franklin's story.... since Tonya was his friend.

I think towing is fine (wish it had some crime aspect to it though). The missions did give more details on what kind of life Franklin was stuck to. Now only if towing actually gave you anything worthwhile, heck even letting you bang Tonya (and later causing a drama with JB) would have been entertaining at least but no, there's really no reward for doing the missions and it sucks. Even buying the properties nets you no profit unless you tow like a over hundred cars which may not pay full if any damage occurs.

Which is why it seems the game sacrifice gameplay for the sake of narrative, game wanted to get the point across that Franklin is stuck with incompetent peers who guilt trip him to do tasks that don't pay off at all. That's what the game wanted to tell us....sadly at the expense of the player's enjoyment it seems.

Problem is it didn't flesh it out narratively either it's pretty bad overall

I like them actually. It's one of the few things in the game that feels classically GTA. Being given a specific vehicle with a function and then being tasked to use the vehicle in a simple little scenario. I thought it was cool to take a tow truck around and check out a little bit of the city early on. I even ended up giving a ton of tow jobs after buying the towing impound.

I like the concept of it, I really do but the execution is trash imo

Doing one tow truck mission would be somewhat bearable but uhm...3-4 of them? Really Rockstar? Really? -_-

Honestly, even the concept is trash for a GTA game. You can expect this from say, a Mafia game because it is largely a narrative-driven game but GTA games should always focus on good gameplay and then try to write a story on it.

I must be one of the only people who didn't mind Tonya. Sure the missions are a bit boring, but there is far worse things about this game.

Saying that, I enjoyed doing the lawn mowing jobs in Bully, so that should tell you everything. I'm strange.

I kinda just feel sorry for her more than anything, seeing someone that wacked out on drugs all the time is sad.

I don't like Tonya, but it's hard to hate her. Drugs are a powerful thing, and it clearly affected her and JD badly.

It is fun harassing her as Trevor and Michael though, go to her marker as either of the two and click ->

yes but i never did. even if you kill her it’s not canon and she’ll come back after some time. if you are gonna kill her, be sure to watch out because there is a whole lot of gang members and they’ll shoot you as soos as they hear your shot.

Not particularly hate her as such, but I have to say that all black characters in GTA 5 are extremely poorly written. Franklin, Tonya, Lamar - they just sort of hang out, have lengthy pointless unfunny neverending banter and have no personality.

As if R* just wanted some filler to plug the gaps in the plot or something.

Missions are cool though.

I feel like R* aren't the best at writing Black characters in general. I think Lamar is good though. Tonya also could potentially have been a good character, she isn't badly written (meant to be an annoying degenerate and is). It's just her missions and the premise for them are so dumb and pointless, that's the actual annoying part. And also because those repetitive missions are the only time you see her the subject of her dialogue is repetitive, if she was in the game more could've been better.

I liked CJ and Kendl as far as black characters in GTA go, I'd say Big Smoke was a pretty well written villain too

Ehh they're not bad but I don't think SA characters have a lot of depth to them, they're a bit on the generic side. CJ and Kendl are quite bland and Big Smoke is just a comedic character to me. Although Tenpenny is great of course, I forgot him. Imo Franklin, Vic and CJ are probably the blandest/least interesting GTA protagonists which doesn't reflect too well on the quality of Black characters they write. At least there's Luis.

They're all just stereotypes. I don't really get what Franklins conflicts are - he wants to leave the hood and who can blame him when he's surrounded by psycopathic hood rats like Lemar, or junkie hoes like Tonya, or abusive aunty whatever her name is etc etc.

Would've much preferred there be some compelling, vibrant characters written in and around the hood who had actual human qualities and positives. Or family etc, but no. Nothing. Nada.

i couldn’t agree more. all people who franklin knew were some ungreatful creeps like his aunt. no wonder he wants to leave that place. i can completly agree with anything franklin has done such as hanging out with michael instead of those useless fake people called friends and family even though i bashed him a lot

So you cant keep the tow truck in a garage and use it tow anything you want? (As pointless as that would be)
