Sad reflections nearly a year on

That this artbook is likely never going to see the light of day is a huge disappointment, the description from the leaked amazon listing for it sounded so awesome. I wanted to see all that concept art and wanted to read more about the development of this amazing game!

TBH, most of Rockstar's concept art is rather plain as they mostly use real references (never really have seen any spectacular pieces)- but I was looking forward more to the character development sections (i.e. seeing how they developed Arthur and what he could have turned out as), as well as some additional context to the plot/background details that could have been left out in the final release- basically I hoped that the concept art book would act as an appendix to the game.

It gets a bit tiring reading the same dumb argument over and over in this forum. It's okay to prefer the New Austin area, but saying the rest of the map lacks a western feel just shows your ignorance of the genre.

I understand it’s a broad genre, I just felt like they were pushing it even in that respect with the air balloon mission, the stranger missions with the scientist, and of course the Guama chapter. Not to mention the honking great big industrial city.

In all of this, the Western “feeling” was eventually mostly lost on me, and I’m sorry if that bothers you but it’s a valid opinion 👍

There are different types of westerns. RDR2 is still distinctly western...I mean, watch Unforgiven for example.

People are just wanting both tbh. The Spaghetti Western vibe of New Austin was so cool and since it was included in sp, I guess people just wanted to see it in sp and not just in a dull epilogue.

I loved the settings in Rdr2, it suited the game so well. I can live without new Austin and nuevo but I can definitely live without Guarma.

I also love the setting I’m afraid (Other than Saint Denis). Absolutely love the heartlands and the grizzlies especially, and Valentine is a thing of beauty. You’ve missed my point!

I dislike St. Denis so much. I never go there.

The same. It's a reinforcement of Arthur's personality in not wanting to being close to that 'civilization'. However, I like exploring the bayou and swamps from time to time as it has its very unique atmosphere, and my favorite background music are the tracks that exclusively play in the swamps and Scarlett Meadows.

To clarify, because I think some people misunderstood me; my issue isn’t with the setting, in fact I think the world (barring St Denis and Guama) is, along with the characters, the strongest aspect of the game. I found the majority of the world perfectly western, and I love exploring it on horseback.

My issue is with the writing/storytelling, which I feel was slightly outrageous and sometimes completely un-western. I also think the action was more often than not totally over the top and made me feel like I was being pandered to.

But for the record I would still say I love RDR2, I’m just left frustrated because like I said I think it had the bones to be something really special, maybe on par with the original. But they took some decisions which I think to many of us find hard to understand/accept, and in my opinion for those reasons it falls short of its classic predecessor by some margin.

re: people saying it didn't feel like a western being "dumb"

Westerns in 2019 are niche, western films and shows are few and far between, games are even rarer. For a lot of people when they think of westerns they think arid landscapes, cowboys, duster coats, small towns etc, not lush forests and swamps, big, industrial cities and things like that.

If you're a hardcore fan of westerns you'll have undoubtedly read, watched or listened to stories about westerns in these settings but a lot of people have not. That doesn't make them dumb or wrong it just means their experiences with the genre are not the same as yours, so leave that sh*t namecalling at the door please and thank you.

Why did you answer the same reply with two different answers?🤔

Aside from the scientist missions and Guarma almost all the tropes within the game have been explored in western novels/films. Whether you like it or not it's irrelevant because they have have precedent in the western genre. Also no need to be offended, I said "dumb argument", which is not the same as calling you dumb. You merely haven't watched and read the same amount of western films and books as I have.

Lol yeah I'm the snowflake that got his jimmies rustled because someone called me out on my lack of knowledge.
I don't get why you are taking what I said as an insult, but whatever floats your boat.

Whoever said this game was a western anyway?

America, 1899. The end of the Wild West era has begun. After a robbery goes badly wrong in the western town of Blackwater, Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang are forced to flee. With federal agents and the best bounty hunters in the nation massing on their heels, the gang must rob, steal and fight their way across the rugged heartland of America in order to survive. As deepening internal divisions threaten to tear the gang apart, Arthur must make a choice between his own ideals and loyalty to the gang who raised him.

I honestly loved the Guarma part. Dutch got his taste of a so-called paradise and it wasn’t so pleasant.

I still play the game nearly everyday. Just love to freeroam, hunt, fish, rob people. It's like a 1899 sim to me.

Absolutely love the map and gameplay.

The story could've been better and my main issue is that Arthur can't go to New Austin so we can't never really experience a real "western" landscape with him.
