Is this a shadow bug or it's more like a ... feature?

I hope Rockstar will step up their shader/shadow game in GTA6...because this is kinda annoying...

 

Moon + shadow = wrong direction?

(There's only a street lamp behind Trevor which is too far from him to cast shadow)

 

Cars do not cast shadows on player even though the shadow settings are maxed.

I'm pretty sure it's a bug. Nice find though, never noticed this. Pretty sure it's only on PC, assuming that you're playing on PC, and I'm playing on XB1 and never actually seen this.

Many features in GTA V are a downgrade in comparison to GTA IV. In GTA IV, PC version, highest shadows allow headlights to shadow behind the player and the peds among many other things. They had to, and they did the same thing from III to VC to SA to pull off sequels on the same hardware what they did on PS2 era games in the same ways. The vehicle sim/handling was best in III compared to SA (sa was funner, but the sim aspect was best in III in PS2, for example, same thing happened in IV and V, IV was amazing, they had to scale it back, same with the natural motion animation engine, too).

 

At the same time, there is a load of upgrades to the PS4/One/PC version (especially) that previous games didn't have, too. it's tradeoffs. They push the systems to their limits. In order to put out more games, they need to scale back to make room, combined with new techniques that help them not have to scale back too much.

 

The shadow wrong direction from the moon may be from a light behind Trevor there, or it may be a real bug, not sure.

Shadows follow sources of light (obviously). I don't think the moon is actually counted as a light source or if it is it may not be designed by default to cast shadows unlike the sun. The main light source may be coming from the sun which is behind Trevor hence the awkward shadows.

Are you using VisualV? I'm not sure I've ever seen these bugs with that mod.

Judging by that photo, it is totally possible that a sunrise is just beginning to occur, and the sun shadows/long shadows are not occluded very well at long distances. I think you might have called that one on the nose and figured it out.

It is the sun direct light that is casting that shadow - Even if the Direct light is as little as 0.0050 at night it will still load direct shadows

You can fix this by changing the <light_direction_override> in the Timecycle of each x weather of your choice

Add <Shadow_Headlights value="true" /> to your settings.xml that's in your documents folder

It's called artificial light mate and it can be changed in the Timecycle in the artificial light section

This will be fixed same way as i explained your other 3 problems above.
