Which foreign setting would best suit GTA?

For an Australian themed GTA I think Melbourne would probably be the best bet. It has a long criminal history dating back to the early 1900s (Look up the 90s Melbourne Gangland wars). There's also the Italian mafia, Lebanese gangsters, Triads etc. Basically all the criminal organisations infamous in other countries just with an Aussie spin. As an Aussie I've always felt Australia isn't represented enough (Though Forza Horizon 3 helped) and I would love to see more games in my homeland.

I would pay good money for a 1980s Neddy Smith era Sydney. You could have Melbourne and Sydney with a "Rentakill" Flannery type character who zips between the two cities doing hits for the different gangs.

For non-Australians Neddy Smith was a 6ft 6 street fighter and armed robber handpicked by the New South Wales police department to run the heroin traffic into Sydney from Asia in the late 70s to 80s. He had something called the "Green Light" from the police to rob, beat and kill whoever he liked.

"Rentakill" as the name suggests was a psychotic hitman who came unstuck when he threw in with corrupt police to kill a detective who was planning to testify against them. He didn't succeed and the police offed him... or so they say.

1990-ies Russia. I'd hate the tropical setting, but central Russia/Siberia would work just fine for me. R* will have some big shoes to fill though!

GTA Tokyo? Think of all the Zaibatsu references they could make/bring back.

Driving on the wrong side of the road would be annoying though like it was in GTA London.

I think a GTA Tokyo would be pretty cool. They could hit a lot of nails on the head with that setting such as those wishing for an organized crime set up, extensive car customization, and underground street racing.

Other places, Mexico City could work pretty good too as they could make a decent story driven game based around the power cartels there wield around their federal government.

1990's Moscow or maybe Vladivostok. A lot of corruption in both cities post the Soviet collapse and therefore many avenues for organized crime.

Japan is way too safe to work as a GTA, even the possession of swords is regulated by law, Thailand may be the only Asian setting that might work for a GTA game. South Africa was an interesting suggestion.

Several good ideas here!

Asia: I liked the Hong Kong / Macau / China idea very much - like an Asian version of San Andreas (LS = Hong Kong, LV = Macau, Rest of China more of "countryside").

Europe: I'm sure London would work well! Amsterdam would also be a great idea, with all the canals might make some interesting missions. Paris would qualify too - as perhaps Vienna + Austria (Mountains).

Central / South America: Mexico, Brazil - some cool ideas, throw in some rainforest and we got ourselves a mix!

90s Russia would be interesting to see. They could use Russian crime movies such as 1997 movie Brother as inspiration (though it's likely they already used that as inspiration for GTA 4,since there are some similarities).

Since I liked movies like Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch,I think 90s Britain would be interesting to see.

Seeing the Italian mafia on their home turf would also be interesting,so I think Italy would be cool to see.

I don't know how realistically did the 1974 movie Stone portray Australian biker gangs in the 70s (especially because pretty much all of them are riding Japanese or European standard/naked bikes instead of cruisers),but after watching it,I'm also interested in 70s Australian setting.

I think Brazil could work as a setting, they could show the favelas and gangs that fight for control over them.

Australia before 1995 or so (Port Arthur massacre causing massive change in gun culture). The idea of GTA in Europe doesn't appeal to me that much because the gun and car culture is massively different from America but oldtimey Australia comes pretty close. Doesn't mean of course that I dismiss playing open world games outside of America, I really enjoyed Sleeping Dogs for instance but those games have a rather different feel from GTA.

Baja California, Mexico

It's at the US Border, has a strong cartel presence and home to lots of beautiful scenery.

South Africa might also work, I'm wondering why nobody suggested it yet.

Thought I'd add another contribution to my list, and though maybe somewhat unusual, it may be a good addition. South Africa. It would be an especially unique setting with megadiverse wildlife, but it's also a country that's full of crime and carjackings (from what I have heard at least) so it would seem like GTA could fit in quite well. Only issue is that it may be a bit hard to parody, but as a Commonwealth nation it wouldn't be as hard as other settings perhaps. I can't comment with certainty on that half, but still.

Australia (Sydney) and New Zealand (Wellington) - would be cool to have those as 2 separate islands so that the only way to get from one to the other is by plane or boat.

What also would be nice would be a map made up of smaller islands - again connected only by boat, helicopter or plane. Of course each island would have its own infrastructure with roads, buildings, cars etc.

The cutthroat mexican cities close to the US border like Ciudad Juarez would make an excellent setting.

Otherwise like I wrote in other topics Marseille during the French connection would be a very good set.

"We're going to Aruba!!!" - GTAIII pedestrian

Somewhere in the timelines of real life HD universe (all of us are in the 3D universe) , GTA Aruba was created instead of GTA Vice City.

Us 3000BC kids also remembered GTA Bogota.

Max payne 3's rendition of sao paulo wouldnt be too out of place in a GTA game tbh

Imagine a City of God style GTA game set in the 90s (when favela funk started to become popular) with parkour style mechanics where you run a favela gang, that would be dope
