Cyberpunk will challenge GTA for the open world King

Recommended Posts

For the first time GTA is being challenged for the open world crown. Ever since GTA3 developers have tried to emulate the Rockstar open world magic, True Crime, Getaway, Saints Row, Sleeping Dogs all tried previous generation and failed miserable and the term GTA Clone was coined. This generation people thought Ubisoft had it nailed down with Watch Dogs and we all know how that turned out and Crackdown 3.....well that goes without saying. Non of these games were able to capture that GTA feel that vibe until now.

Before I start I want to talk a bit about Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA games in general. I did not enjoy RDR2 Naked Jakey made a great video about it and I agree with all of his sentiments but there's more to it than that and for all of its PR about being a beautiful open world game that is immersive there's not so much immersion going on. There are plenty of random events that occur in the game most are not that interesting to begin with and after a while they start repeating. There is this constant disconnect with what the story is and the world you live in and this could be said about all GTA games as well. You have no impact on the world, the world doesn't change due to your actions it alway stays the same.

Cyberpunk 2077 seems to be changing all of that. The game world although huge is also filled to the brim with culture and things to do and your decisions actually change the world your in. Your actions actually have a lasting impact on the world and you leave your foot print on it. Gameplay also has a major boost as first person shooting is far superior to third person Rockstar understood this and added FP mode with an update and going forward FP will be standard for GTA.

It does everything GTA does of you driving around the city, shooting AND its a RPG on top of that with a far more immersive story that you actually control and your actions impact the world. I really thing for the first time Rockstar has a real challenger when it comes an open world game. GTA6 really needs to up the ante on all fronts, having the same system of having a cutscene driving to a location shooting everything there and cutscene and the mission is over its not going to cut it and quite honestly their writing isn't half as good as they think it is, RDR2 showed this. It will be interesting to see the impact Cyberpunk has and I bet anything Rockstar is looking at it very closely.

Cyberpunk isn't even out yet. It's too early to praise it and say it's going to challenge GTA.

You've already made a similar topic btw.

Never realised that this game was a open world sandbox game as well, thought it would be more like just a RPG like Witcher. Might have to give it a try when it comes out.

Honestly I would welcome any competition. The other franchises you've mentioned kinda flopped and I would not mind something that could oppose GTA. No game out there has a simliar online experience (although the current GTA V online is quite meh). Cyberpunk appears to not have any online capabilities but If they can make a fun single player world, I'm all for it.

As Rockstar has no competition, they have no real incentive to invest more as they could have if they had competition.

However, considering Cyberpunk would be their first proper take in a sandbox like game that can oppose GTA maybe, I wouldn't say handsdown it will beat it.

Waaaay too much praise for something that isn't even out yet and using First Person Shooting as major argument isn't too strong either. I'd much rather have only 3rd person than 1st person myself for the experience alone.

Great video if you want his opinion on the game, poor video if you want to actually break down what the game does well and and what it doesn't do well.

RDR2 isn't an RPG, there's maybe 3 or 4 choices you have to make in the game and  that's it, you won't find many open world games that actually change due to your actions, including RPG's and 100% definitely including Cyberpunk 2077.

Even then, RDR2's world is impacted in small ways due to events in the story and open world things, like Valentine becoming hostile to you after you have a fight there, Strawberry becoming a no-go area after you shoot it up, the dead or alive bounty changing how you interact and move about in places. Then there's smaller stuff like the house that gets built with your help, the logging area changing as you visit, the NPC's you can interact with over the course of the game commenting on things that have happened and Arthur's health.

This idea that video game worlds should be impacted and changed by you is wut. Technically speaking it would be a massive feat and even then, it's not very realistic. In RDR2's situation you're playing an outlaw on the run, he isn't going to change the world, it's going to change him, and through character development that absolutely happens.

Yeah, i don't believe Cyberpunk will succeed to captivate the demographics of GTA's ongoing traffic.

I'll say its only going be as good as Watch Dog's hype and RDR2's story, then die out like The Walking Dead's game.

Hell multiplayer hasn't been announced yet and Dying Light 2 will very likely live longer to GTA's demographics who aren't easily scared.

Well I mean Cyberpunk isn't really competing with GTA V, VI or RDR2. It's a proper RPG, it's a very different beast. As for the hype, CDPR's last game Witcher 3 is still talked about to this day and is frequently used as an example of DLC done right as well.

It's gonna be the biggest game of 2020 and it has a very good chance of being the biggest game of the generation, I'd say the only thing that might challenge it at this point is a surprise reveal for GTA VI next year. The multiplayer isn't revealed because it's not part of the game at launch, they're selling this based on the SP only. When the pre-orders went live it shot to the top of the Steam best sellers immediately, despite not being out for nearly a year and Steam charging for pre-orders instantly. It is also the most wish listed game on Steam and in the Steam event going on right now that's giving away games, Cyberpunk has been given away every single day to winners.

Ahh remember when Rockstar Games had that honour last generation before GTAO happened? Good times.

Also, Rockstar Games still treat PC Gamers like crap, so ironically, Cyberpunk 2077 will most likely be out BEFORE Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC, and which one do you think will do better? The already next gen-esque game or a delayed port (not even a port, just delayed for delayed's sake) of a game that console gamers enjoyed in 2018 and quickly moved on from since Rockstar gave no hint about sup[porting it with any kind of Single Player content?

GTA 3 was a revolutionary step in the open world/sandbox theme. Not many games of that calibre from other developers have managed to go very close, or have even beaten it to the top. As a result of these failures, nobody else except Rockstar Games have maintained that level of consistency as years go by, due to their experience and unrivalled success of the series.

Cyberpunk 2077 is definitely moving in the right step. But it is still classed as an RPG, rather than an open world, sandbox styled type of game. Whether it can jump into uncharted waters with success is still undetermined at this time.

A modern day Witcher 3, with modern/futuristic elements to make it appealing to worldwide audiences, has definitely ticked a box that many of us are eager to anticipate.

CD Projekt Red have a good reputation with the public and have made steady progress, also providing a surprise or two, which buys them time to prepare and ensure they can compete in a tough market dominated by GTA, if that is the objective for the creators.

The amount of hype the trailers have shown adds pressure, but also expectation to the company, so they will prioritise their resources into creating the killer game.

I wish the best to CP2077 but as everyone has said you're talking as if it's a done deal that CP2077 will overcome the success previous GTAs saw.

CP2077 looks great from what I've seen, but given it's not an established franchised, and that it's not "The Witcher but in the future", I don't have anything to base CP2077 on to guess whether or not if it will be a good game.

One is a third-person open-world action-adventure and the other is a first-person open-world RPG. The only common denominator is the open-world part. You really have to do some amazing mental gymnastics to do a fair comparison.

Nah it won't..Cyberpunk 2077 is a completely different type of game..it's an RPG so of course you have choices and more impact on the world.

Cyberpunk will be a RPG. GTA is well, GTA, it's almost a genre of its own, that's why the term GTA clone exists. Will it challenge GTA as a game? Sure. Will it challenge GTA as a game of the same genre? It can't, so no.

One more thing, if Rockstar decides to treat first person mode as more than a small bonus to slightly enhance the gameplay experience, like for example, forcing it or focusing more on it while neglecting important elements of the game, that will be the last GTA I'll buy. For me one of the great things about GTA is that it's in third person. I was ok with the introduction of first person to GTA V, since it's optional and doesn't bother me, but the moment Rockstar decides it should, it will be a goodbye from me.

Lots of people said this about Skyrim, Far Cry, Fallout , Witcher 3, and so on.

People kept claiming those games above beat R* in terms of open world, but did they really? To be honest, yes, a bit.

But for real though, R* is always praised for their maps. Some games tested this claim, but I doubted it.

However, with the way R* focuses more on money than praise, I have a bad feeling this claim will be true. Cyberpunk 2077 looks breathtaking so far, so I really hope R* doesn't let their achievement go to someone else.

Dont forget about Dying Light 2, they're very likely to surpress Cyberpunk and has better gameplay as well without futuristic BS.

Dying Light 2 is ambitious with some of the things it's doing but Cyberpunk 2077 is in a whole other ball park of ambitious. Cyberpunk has the hype it does for a reason, it isn't manufactured, it's been highly anticipated since it was announced in 2012 and that hype sky rocketed when CDPR released The Witcher 3 which is widely regarded as one of the games of the generation.

How can people compare two different genres and claim one of them is superior? Why don't we start comparing GTA to Skyrim while we're at it?

Same thing happened with Days Gone and well the hype died very fast after release.

I think comparing Cyberpunk 2077 to Days Gone is pretty insane 😂 Cyberpunk 2077 is shaping up to be one of the greatest games to ever be made. I'm not caught up in the hype for it at all. I know I will play it, and I'm sure I'll enjoy it, though.

Time will tell I guess. I can't say no more as I haven't read much about that game yet.

The better the competition the better GTA 6 will be.

I just wanna see good games that actually keep me playing and having some feature in them where I can replay something all the time, like Vigilante in Vice City.

No, it will not challenge GTA 6 or GTA in that matter in any way ... both are vastly different games apart from being "open-world". Their E3 showing this year (CP2077) was pretty lacklustre to say the least. Red Dead Redemption 2's singleplayer is amazing and a huge step up from GTA V and I can only imagine that with GTA 6, R* will blow everything and everyone out of the water. There literally was no new entry in the series over an entire console life-cycle, so expect big things from GTA 6.

Not sure if that's true..GTA V got lots of complaints here and is very divisive. And the Rockstar games circlejerk isn't even close to how ridiculous the CDPR circlejerk has been since TW3. Especially on youtube and reddit where the whole thing is made fun of now (Praise Geraldo!).

I don't know, but I just don't get the Cyberpunk 2077 hype. Even when I watched some of the E3 footage it didn't do much to inspire. The only reason I think I would buy it is because of the setting, but then again I've bought many games based on their setting and been left disappointed so I'll reserve judgment until some reviews start floating around and make up my mind if it's worth buying.

I fell for the same trap with The Witcher 3 and got bored of it and then traded it in. Lesson learned.
