Am I the only that doesn't want GTA VI to be in the 80's?

We had already 80's, TWICE

And they've done modern THREE times. It's a bit of a redundant argument. The setting is more of a backdrop, it's the theme of the game that changes it. Sure, I'd love a return to 80's Vice City. But I really don't mind either way. And I have no clue where they'll go next.

I would definitely like the game to be set in the 80s this time around even though we have seen it in the past. We have already seen two modern GTA games done in a row (IV, V). This would also give Rockstar more ways to get creative with the game.

I think it all depends on how they were to go about it. A good story can be told in any era in any city. What I really don't want is the 80s as a setting just so the developers have an excuse to throw as many tired pop culture references at us as they can.

I am curious to see how a Rockstar Game set in the 80s would look and feel today though. Vice City and San Andreas were games that came out of a Rockstar that was much more interested in doing pop culture parody than telling a compelling story.

Well, if you look at it this way, we had the 2000's twice and the 2010's once, and if GTA VI is set in the modern times we would have the 2020s. Meanwhile, if GTA VI was set in the 80's, we would have the same decade three times. Do you understand what I mean?

Probably better it set in modern days, at least this time could please fans of any era by cars, radio, references and other minor stuff. Because if this will be only 80, game will be very limited in everything.

Morden day.

As someone who's a fan of Vice City I feel like it only worked at the time because the Housers looked towards Scarface, Miami Vice etc or basically any other source material when they were younger adults and wanted something to capture in GTA form. Of course they could use another city and set it in the 80s, but it seems like R* have a very strict inner circle when it comes to locations and I'll wager GTA VI will be in Vice City or it'll be one of the locations (depending how true the rumours are).

But back to Vice City. I just don't see how going back to the 80s again would be of much of a benefit. The 80s South Florida drug boom is easily the most iconic period of that time so maybe other than going into some more detail Vice City didn't it really would feel like Vice City 2.0 to me and as I said in another thread I feel modern games are more unique because in time they carve out their own "period pieces". I don't even see GTA III and GTA IV as necessarily modern anymore and more of a reflection how the GTA series saw the modern world at the time.

The only other solution is to have a bi-time period game where it starts in the 80s and time leaps into the modern era, but that just sounds cheesy and would be hard to pull off. I grew up in the 80s some I'm not some kid that likes the idea of surfing on Facebook all day long, but the 80s is too much of a niche time period. It's probably why developers rarely touch it now including R* themselves.

Could imagine the story taking place in 80s and 90s and Online at present day.

Modern is always different. GTA III and IV were in the 2000's, V in the 2010's Modern GTA VI would be set in the 2020's, so that has never been done before. So that's a moot point. However they did first '86 and then '84. That's twice in the same dacade.

If the next GTA would be in Vice City I wouldn't like to be in the 80's because it would feel like a GTA Vice City 2.0 (same theme, similar weapons, similar characters),maybe the 90's or early 2000's would be better but I want to be in present.

Something to consider:

Vice City came out in 2002.  The 80’s as a decade had just ended a mere 12 years earlier. Even though VC and VCS was 86 & 84, it’s still less than 20 years from 2002, and the 80’s as a whole was relatively fresher in people’s minds.

At this point, the 80’s was almost 30 years ago, with the events of VC and VCS taking place over 30 years ago.  I’d bet most GTA players are under 30 years old and have no connection to or recollection of the 80’s, and probably wouldn’t look at it with the same fondness as we did in ‘02.  Now, to be fair there are always exceptions: I wasn’t born in the 70’s but I’d love to see a 70’s GTA.

San Andreas came out in ‘04, but took place in 1992.. how long was that ? 12 years, yet the 90’s as a decade ended only 5 years prior. I said all of that to say; the 80’s and 90’s weren’t that far into the past at the times the games were released.  At this point, you’d have to go back basically 20 years just to touch the 90’s.  If R* went back 12+/- years average (using the old games as reference) now, we’d be in 2007.   Because of this honestly I can’t see R* going back to the 90’s or before, but of course that is just my observation.

GTAO will be set in 2020 in a year, because the timeline keeps moving with each update. I'm already tired of this futuristic sh*t, time to go back to the 80s (or 60s).

Point taken. But I still don't think it really matters that much. It's not like the game would feel exactly the same as GTA Vice City (2002) just because it was set in the 80's. It really depends on the theme of the game, it's mechanics, and what you do/can do in that world.

Maybe a poor example, but it would be like arguing all movies made or set in the 80's are exactly the same... because they're set in the 80's. At the end of the day, if it's good it's good. The time period shouldn't matter too much.

I’d say modern day with a mix of some 80’s elements in areas that really hasn’t changed much.

First of all, people need to stop including a PSP game that I've already pointed out hasn't even been played by over 90% of the people who bought V. This should only be about main titles unless you also want to include Liberty City Stories, Chinatown Wars, The Lost and Damned, The Ballad of Gay Tony, and GTA Advance.

More importantly, how much of a difference is there between 2013 and 2020? Plus, as gtafan1995 mentioned, GTA Online's timeline keeps moving forward so we've pretty much already experienced a GTA in this current time.

Think about the changes and overall feel of the time periods of previous games...

GTA III to Vice City - big change

Vice City to San Andreas - big change

San Andreas to GTA IV - big change

GTA IV to GTA V - moderate change

GTA V to modern GTA VI - very little change

I agree about the Stories games. I'd argue it's like treating TLaD & TBoGT as seperate titles. The Stories games were essentially extended prologue games, right? I still loved them. But they weren't major titles. I guess it's a grey area.

As for the change between GTA V & VI? I agree, the world in 2019 - 20/23? hasn't changed that much from back in 2013. But I'd argue the strength in what Rockstar would do would be how well they could portray a living breathing world. I don't think the time setting has to be different enough, I'd argue GTA III in 2001 to GTA IV in 2008 is a good comparison. I just think it would be more on the level of detail and realism and interaction with the world that would make the biggest change/impact.

I have to stress, I don't really have a singular desire for when I want the game to be set. I love the 80's setting, but I also love modern day, and the advantages that brings with it.

yeah, if we look at them as they aren't major titles but Stories and Orignal games have different missions, athmosphere, music, characters, styles each of them takes a lot of work from designers, writers, artists etc. So i can think that creating stories R* put one of their best ideas on the table. I do love stories too, but they were kinda lower in quality in many ways, graphics and story wise.

If R* touches 80's again it will be same scarface theme, cocaine everywhere, espantoso, exploder movies etc. What can R* tell us more about the 80's and not being repetitive? We already have 2 games with 80's vice city but we do not have HD modern Vice city.

I'm a bit biased in wanting 80s Vice City but they could always choose another city like Detroit. The 80s weren't all sunshine and fun.

Think Robocop the 1987 movie not the sh*tty reboot. The high crime rate, corrupt mayor, and corporations controlling the city would give it a good storyline.

Or even Fargo which also took place in 1987. Dark but with a bunch of characters who are naive about all the bad sh*t happening around them.

GTA Online will always be modern time but the overrall story of GTA VI will span over multiple decades. And people saying its difficult have no experience in game design nor modeling to come up with such a pretentious conclusion, substance designer will be used to ivy and rust things over time.

What about if it’s set in 2010?.

Lester says the crew from the south went down.

So I think it’s between the events of IV and V.

This would complete the HD trilogy.

Pretty sure if Rockstar were going to do multiple decades they'd go quite a bit deeper than just reskinning the map with some "rust and ivy" to show that time has passed. There'd be full building renovations, intersections turning from stop sign to stop lights, highway/road expansions and all sorts of other things to consider.

There's also the considerably different types of cars they'd have to populate the streets with in each decade. Also, different NPCs with different fashion, animations, and dialogue. Hell, the radio stations alone would be a massive amount of work even if they only did two different decades.

Not saying it's impossible but I can't see Rockstar half-assing something like this and it hardly seems like it would be worth the effort.

Though I voted for the 80s, I can't say I "want" it in the eighties, however I miss that and it could be loads of fun in the 80s, especially if it's vice city again. There's so much they can do and do again much better than they did the first time.

Modern day Miami hasn't been relevant since LeBron won two championships with the Heat and Vitaly doing his zombie pranks.

I definitely don't want the 70s. That's too far back for GTA IMO. There aren't any interesting things post GTA V to go for the modern setting again. 2013 and 2008 were very different and that's why V and IV had different vibes. But 2019 isn't really that different from 2013. The world is changing slower nowadays when it comes to "style". Here are my priorities.

1. Late 90s

2. Early 00s

3. Early 90s

4. Late 80s

5. Early 80s

6. 2008-Modern day.

You just haven't searched Miami on Youtube everyday since 2013 like me, lol. I gots tons of ideas for Vice City in Modern day.

Cobra Kai is a prime example.

GTA in the past is over nowadays the majority of players especially with GTA online want the maximum of weapons, cars, clothes, music and all that a modern city can offer

there is no chance that they will return in the past unless being very naive

The Mafia series to stay at T2 is more suitable for this format.
