Because the game will not have beautiful and fast cars, no internet and etc.. the game may have incredible soundtrack but why not they make GTA 6 set in the modern with some of the 80's music and some modern music instead all 80's songs and we already have two GTA set in Vice City which are Vice City and Vice City Stories from 80's and now it's about time we have a modern day Vice City in GTA 6, because 80's is enough..

I think it's because Vice City has not been done in the HD generation. It does have some nice cars for Its time and such.

I too would prefer a more modern setting but maybe some of the older games have nostalgia with Vice city or the 80s theme and would like it to be remade in a sense.

It could start in the 80's for a while (main protagonist being young), and then get to modern days.

add the option 70s pls

yes id rather 70s than either of the other 2 options

this era has only been explored in driver parallel lines afaik

I say it's enough of modern day. IV, V and the yearslong Online game are set in modern day. I'd prefer a 70s, 80s or 90s setting because it'll be refreshing and more original compared to other open-world games.

80s had fast cars...and the internet isnt necessary.

Damn right it isn't. Wouldn't have any problems for the era being set in the 80's. Mabye even the golden eras of the 70's and 60's. Would actually be a plus tbh :turn:

I prefer 80s but i have a strong feeling that we will have a storyline that will have both 80s and modern day

I wouldn't mind playing in the 80's and moving forward to today.

80’s and somehow slip 30/40 years in time. Like mafia 2 did when Vito go’s to jail.

A GTA that plays in 2 different time periods would definitely be very interesting. Opens a lot of opportunities for an interesting story line. I wouldn't miss any of the modern day elements you describe, so a GTA in the past has my preference if it is 1 time period. 80's is great but any other period would do for me too.

I would like to see both but I voted for modern day because of all the taking the piss that could be made with what our planet has become as of 2019!

I'd take 80s over another GTA game set in the present any day,no matter the location.

Also,80s had plenty of beautiful fast cars (Ferrari Testarossa, Lambo Countach, Porsche 959, Chevy Corvette C4, etc.),and internet isn't necessary since its only real use in GTA is to buy vehicles and properties (in case of the former it could be replaced by introducing vehicle dealerships, and the latter could be done the same way as in GTA VC and SA).

Well, people can like whatever they like... if I want the 80s but everyone wants modern, there's not much I can do.

But that being said, "it's overdone" and "no smartphones and internet" are poor arguments against a past setting. I still think this is the best post that summarises this mentality:

I wasn't born in the 80s, so I wouldn't pick a GTA to be set in the 80s, because I don't remember much of it, even though it seems to be a popular choice for the sake of vanity. Modern times all the way.

There's lots of potential for a GTA to be set in the present time.

But it depends on how the writers can maximise this opportunity to make a game that is appropriate for the time, as well as putting their signature touch that has made the franchise special in its own way.

It can be difficult because there isn't much space to work with, and some people favour things from the past rather than the present.

Any game set after the year 1996 gets my vote.

I really don't want modern day. There are so many social and political issues going on in real life and I'm sick of it all. I don't want to be exposed to more of the same things in a video game. Give me the 80s!

I'd like another game set in the 1980s.

Many people mention the lack of smartphones, which is quite integral with HD era GTA games. However, the smartphone is essentially a quick and easy to use pop-up menu. A game set in the past prior to smartphones, or the just-before-smartphones (whatever you consider what's in the GTA IV trilogy), can still have a convenient pop-up menu. It doesn't need to be represented by any sort of physical world object. That's unless you're making or receiving calls and messages, which only then the player would pull a "brick phone" or a pager out of their own rectum. The lack of internet shouldn't be a huge deal either. It can be replaced with a sort of catalog (for purchases) and newspaper (for funny commentary and whatnot) system, as seen in Scarface: The World Is Yours and Red Dead Redemption 2.

Sure, the game will be much more aesthetically vintage being set 30+ years in the past, but the core functionality of the game can still remain roughly the same.

I am really getting tired of this "But, the 80's have been done before!" - nonsense, like GTA hasn't been about " "satirizing" the oh so silly modern society, and "criticizing" the ebil goberment" - bullsh*t for over a decade.

If I hear the word "jingoism" one more time...

Besides, the concept of the sports car wasn't developed in 2008, the 80's weren't a time-vacuum where music from earlier parts of the century suddenly disappeared (and contemporary music consisted of more than Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Metallica),

everyone even remotely familiar with Reagan, cold war history, or the CIA should know about the potential for ... eh ... satire, and people got around without having every - f*cking -thing available per smartphone.

Modern computing allows for some insane sh*t, especially when made use of competently... And there are people who actually think Vice City, as great as it was, from 2002 is the best we can achieve in terms of simulating an environment set in the past?!

If it's solely based on Vice City then I'd prefer it to be set in the past rather than the present. It doesn't have to be the 1980s. The 1970s or 1990s would work just as well.

GTAVI in a completely new setting, in present day, would be just as appealing to me though.

Yes because this is what everybody wants tbh, the only thing that would have made the next game better (if it is set in vice city, almost 100% sure it is and would be surprised it isnt. Is if tommy vercetti existed in the current universe. The 80s would be awesome to visit again. I cant even begin to imagine how awesome its going to look.

I'd only accept Tommy returning if we can kill him.

Nah bro thats the OG. More so than carl lol plus he was a damn mafia boss by the end..hes too damn cool to be killed off. Anyways i hate how rockstar handle past characters in the previous gta (iv) Im still mad about johnny, regardless trevor is still my favorite of the trio, rockstar really did him wrong, most people.. packie didnt get much love in terms of screen time..Nikko was mentioned once, gay tony didnt look like gay tony and more like a create a gta online character, i sort of went of topic lol my bad. If gta vi is in vice city and features some characters i hope to see

Luis, roman, nikko, trevor. Doubt it tho

I'd rather be a new player in town that pisses off the biggest drug lord in the city be it Tommy V or a new character that's heavily based on him. You build up your empire, setup drug deals, take out all your rivals, and try to keep the cops off your trail.

It's the nature of criminals. They dont trust each other. Those that are on top dont last forever. When one dies another guy steps into their place.

I don't want the next GTA to be in the 80's, and be about drug dealing in Vice City, and South America. Rockstar have already done that...well the Vice City part. If we're gonna get VC as the next location, it's gonna be modern day.
