MELEE ONLY Playthrough

Recommended Posts

I recently started a melee only playthrough of the story and it's been great so far.

Never realized just how good the knife is in this game until taking on this challenge.

My ground rules are no projectiles or firearms allowed unless a mission can't be completed otherwise like "Lure" for example. Running over enemies with a vehicle is permitted although I will try to avoid employing this tactic unless it's really necessary (if I've failed the mission countless times using the conventional melee approach, hasn't happened yet! :colgate:).

My question to all you IV lovers out there is have any of you attempted a challenge like this?

And if so what were your biggest obstacles?

My brother takes the piss and labels me a crackhead for even trying this haha but if someone else out there has done this, surely they're in this community.

The main problem I encounter is missions with allies where I struggle to eliminate all the enemies before my ally is dead. "Russian Revolution" has been a real pain in particular. The few times in +30 attempts I've managed to clear the warehouse without dying or Jacob getting capped, the cops outside always finish him before I can complete the mission. I have faith I'll do it one day though.

Happy to answer any questions or take on any suggestions people might have that I haven't thought of yet.

This sounds like a Mitten Squad playthrough lol. Nevertheless, do you strictly just use a knife or do you switch it up for different missions/scenarios? Surely the bat has some uses in particular circumstances.

This sounds like an incredibly difficult challenge that I wouldn't have a hope of achieving!

But just for Russian Revolution, when I play it regularly I never shoot/attack the cops outside and instead just run as quickly as I can past them to the car that's parked there and get Little Jacob in quick. I've ended up failing a couple of times due to Niko or Jacob getting killed but it usually works better than attacking the cops and increasing the wanted level. I guess only using melee in the fight beforehand probably makes it more difficult though

Also I think Lure could be completed without guns. If you get the guy's attention three times he gets suspicious and leaves the apartment and tries to escape by car. And one way to get his attention (besides shooting the satellite dish or window) is to notice the number written on his phone during the cutscene and call it. So if you call him three times he leaves the apartment without any shots fired. After that I don't know if it's possible to get to the street fast enough to kill him before he gets in his car or if you'd have to have a car chase and run him off the road but seems possible either way.

If you think Russian Revolution is hard, just wait until you have to do Catch the Wave

I've only used the bat for some of the early missions so far and it's hard for me to envision a scenario where it's better than the knife as it's a lot slower to swing and feels more restricting to your movements in combat. I looked up Mitten Squad and I can definitely see the comparison haha. It doesn't seem like many people attempt these kind of playthroughs with GTA games unfortunately but at the same time I suppose it's kind of cool that I'm probably the first one to attempt this.

That's good to know that I can complete that one without guns although I'm guessing there are missions where I'll have to concede that I just can't think of right now. One that involves sniping a target seems most likely.

After another 15 or so attempts tonight, I finally beat Russian Revolution. Onwards and upwards to Bohan!

All I can say is abuse the hell out of Dwayne's backup, then you sould be fine.

Can't play those challenges right now since my PC is kinda sorta dead, but one I'd like to try some day is the pacifist challenge, inspired by speedrunner DarkViperAU.

This lol. Also in some missions if you get a police car you can call for police backup using the computer and let them take enemies out for you. I haven't experimented with it enough but I know it's known as being effective in Portrait of a Killer. One time I called for it during Hostile Negotiation (just before going in the warehouse) and they came in the warehouse and helped a lot. I'm not too sure about the rules of how it works as sometimes it seems to be that if you join in with shooting when police backup is there you get a wanted level for it but sometimes you don't (like I didn't that time in Hostile Negotiation). And I think you can't call for it in some missions. I know it's different to and more helpful than just calling 911 though. It's an under-explored feature I think but could come in handy.

Another tip for Hostile Negotiation is if you ignore the marker outside the warehouse and go up the back stairs (the ones you leave by) instead, the exit you use later is blocked off so you can't go in but it alerts everyone inside and a lot of them start leaving the warehouse and coming up the stairs after you. Obviously the easy way is to machine gun them but I'm thinking maybe it's possible to get them leaving the warehouse that way and then run/avoid them so there's less in there. A riskier way is it's possible to land on the roof with a helicopter and drop in right near the room where Roman's held, the only catch being there's guys with rocket launchers on the roof to avoid so it takes luck and is tricky. Obviously you would have to fire one shot to kill the guy who has Roman at the end but maybe the rest could be done without guns.

That's a one tough challenge . I respect if you can even pass The snow storm and three leaf clover mission .

I tried to do complete Hostile Negotiation with a knife only after seeing this video, and admittedly I didn't go much further than the ground floor.

Getting a helicopter and going in through the roof so the only guy you have to kill with a knife is the one at the door of the room is the way to do it I guess/ Dodging the rockets as you approach the roof and leave the helicopter is literally "hit or miss" and can take a few attempts but after that isn't so hard. Could perhaps also try to alert the guys from the other side of the building first so some leave the warehouse. I'm going to try to do the "one bullet run" next time.

Someone in the comment section of Whatever's video of that mission said that they had a Dwayne goon successfully kill the hostage taker, so even that one bullet might not be necessary.

Melee only?, wouldn't missions like Russian Revolution, Three Leaf Clover, Museum Piece, Out of Commission, Hostile Negotiation etc be somewhat impossible

Well, the thing about Three Leaf Clover is that Packie and Derrick are as durable as a Nokia brick phone, so you can let them do most of the work. Or as someone said, you can call for Dwayne's backup

@Kevert, have you been recording your gameplay? I’d love to see your approach to some of the more difficult missions listed above. Also, this playthrough has all the the makings of a fine YT video... Just something to consider.

This sounds like quite an interesting challenge! Good luck.

And like the post above me said, if you have any footage of your playthrough it would be very cool to see you and how you do some of the missions. I saw a video from a popular Gta Youtuber try to do Hostile Negotiations using only a knife and it was practically impossible.

Blimey!  Love the idea, but some parts will be super hard without guns etc. Good luck!

As much as I'd like to record my gameplay, it takes everything my outdated sh*tbox of a PC has just to run the game unfortunately. I feel like using a program to record would likely make the frames unplayable and crash the game a lot but I can try look into it and give it a go at the very least.

I had considered the possibility of Dwayne's backup as people have mentioned to use in tricky scenarios but I can't in good spirit of the playthrough use them. I've decided to go down the other path when it comes to it so I avoid the temptation.

At the moment I'm really having trouble with the mission "Luck of the Irish" where you have to protect Packie at a drug meet with a sniper rifle. It's near impossible to get down to him and the enemies before he is killed that it almost seems scripted. I've found calling the police to the area at the right moment can slightly delay his death since they force Packie to move from his normal position but in my 20 attempts of the mission so far, I've only managed to get down to ground level and kill a few enemies twice before he died. Definitely tougher and more frustrating than Russian Revolution but I'm hoping this won't be my downfall.

Once when I was replaying that mission I tried going down there a bunch of times (and trying different variables like the timing of it and different routes down - fire escape in front of you being the quickest - and calling the police first) and he always got killed. Googled it and according to the GTA Wiki it is scripted for him to get killed if you leave the roof. I know not everything there is accurate but does seem like it is.

I tried doing Hostile Negotiation with one bullet and it's harder than I thought. I tried starting the mission in a helicopter, landing it near the warehouse and going in the marker and then going back to it (leaving the warehouse after going in the marker causes some of the Russians to come outside so seems like this would be better than just flying straight for the roof), and flying up on the roof dodging the rockets, exiting the helicopter and dropping in near the door to the room with Roman in it. Then stabbed the guy at the door and used one bullet (no choice but to) to shoot the guy holding Roman. Roman's hugging me and saying let's go home and I'm thinking I've done it! But no, I'd hoped at that point remaining enemies would've disappeared but they didn't, a bunch of them stormed the room and killed me as soon as the cutscene ended. I have to concede this one unless there's a way to get all/almost all Russians to leave the building before dropping in.
