Smokewood

Getting all of Pearson's items.

Recommended Posts

Smokewood

It's a double edged sword!

On one hand it slows you down enough and sends you to camp enough to hear all the side dialogue. On the other hand though, it takes forever!!

I'm still in chapter 3 and still need:

badger
panther
cougar x3
Ox x2
moose antler

I hope there is some kind of achievement associated with this!

If I ever play-through again - I'm skipping most of Pearson's stuff!!

I am ashamed to say this... But I have completed the story five or even six times and I have a slight OCD problem, my OCD makes me get the Legend of the east satchel as fast as possible in the second chapter and I also upgrade all things in camp, including the animal parts items to Pearson before I can even do the yellow missions.

So it takes me like 12 hours of gameplay before I can even really start the story in the second chapter.

I'm not going to spoil things for you. But yes I think there is an achievement for getting everything.

And, I'm almost like this.

I do have to do a couple missions to get the buck trinket and a few things going. But I can't leave chapter 2 without finishing them. Those are pretty much the hardest ones to get I think. Either hard to find at all like Badger or Moose. Or hard to find pristine like the Ox. Or hard to find pristine and survive like the other cats.

I think the Moose is the one that really gets me the most. I can't find them ever even when guided by youtube videos. I

prefer to pristine bait and scope rifle kill the cats while lathered in Covering scent. But the springfield or improved arrows do work if you can manage the horse dumping you properly and catch the cat coming back for the second attempt on your life. :)

Exactly why there should've been a a new game plus!

As someone who has OCD, I have to get all the things but not just that, get all the dialogue I can get. So for me it's not a double edged sword but actually killing two birds with one stone. I am currently in Chapter 2 and I have only done 6 or 7 missons, last mission I did was Strauss' debt collecting mission, the first two. I save the Downes one for later. I'm currently 2 Days, 7 hours and 19 minutes into this playthrough, which is my 4th. I am taking it super slow this time and going for the true 100%.

I currently have everything except the Alligator Skull for Arthur's tent and the Moose Antlers. The Alligator skull requires you to go into Lemoyne so I won't get that until chapter 3, I don't go into areas of the map until they have been introduced via the main story. Moose Antlers are difficult because the only place Moose spawn is in Lake Owanjila, I mean they also spawn up by Lake Cairn but those don't have antlers. They also spawn not far from Annesburg but again I won't go near Annesburg or the outskirts of it until Chapter 6, otherwise it doesn't make sense.

When it comes to the satchels, I have all satchels except the two that require a panther pelt and iguana skin, again that requires Lemyone.

Indeed! I am literally pulling my own hair every time I restart the story because of those damn satchels. A New Game Plus would be a most welcome addition indeed.

It'll contribute towards the studying and skinning all animals achievements, but Pearson's stuff doesn't even contribute towards the official 100% trophy either. :(

I'm not sure if the new game plus would solve my issue or not. But it's a thought.

The real reason I posted is I just started another game last night from Eastward Bound (I refuse to do chapter 1 over again.)

to check on dialog options if different mission orders are used.

And, while I had planned to ignore the cougar NW of Horseshoe overlook until I managed to craft improved arrows or buy the springfield. I screwed up and "day 2" ran into the encounter. Luckily for me my horse came in far enough away and parallel to the cat that I was able to sight him right in the head as he turned head on to charge me. 1 shot one kill to the head of a pristine cougar with a regular arrow. -Got me my first perfect cougar pelt long before I expected it.

And wait. Did I just read the Moose doesn't have to be perfect for the camp upgrade?

Can anyone verify that for me?

If I only need the perfect moose for the trapper, then I can sleep easy. I don't need the trapper outfits since I pretty much hate them all.

You just need the antlers, you don't even technically need to bring the pelt back.

Thanks.

I thought the antlers and pelt went on the back of the horse together? Is this telling me that I could stop at the butcher for example and sell the pelt and it would leave the antlers for me to give to Pearson?

WOW. I've many, many, many hours into this game and many, many replays and I did not know this.

IF certain trapper outfits were for cold weather, then maybe I'd be interested in one or two.

@Ironside, I'm on my second playthrough now and, like you, am living in Chapter 2 trying to bust everything out and get the Legend of the East satchel as fast as possible.

In doing so, it's unlocking other stuff as I go, improving my dead eye, running into some stranger missions, and so that singular goal has a lot of other benefits.

I'm focusing on getting cash and getting 100% camp upgrades and all of Pearson's stuff.

That is exactly as I am playing when I do a new start of the story, and I have finished the game six times now. Since I do not like the online part of the game, the story mode is as close as I ever get to a “real” Wild West story and I do indeed love the game despite my sometimes strong opinions about the same. I always start out by getting everything for the bags and then everything for Pearson for camp upgrades, then I really start the story. This time around I did a save just after I got all the bags so I do not need to play the entire game from the start if I chose to to another play through.

But I think I am done for some time in regards of repeating the story and I actually only love the story from chapter 1-4, chapter 5 and 6 kinda sucks. I do like the epilogue but I would have preferred the option to chose my protagonist after the epilogue no matter how non canonical and illogical it would have been in regards to the story, it is after all just free roam and every player will do non canonical things.

But as mentioned earlier not by me, a “New Game+” where one at least kept the personal gear would improve the replay value immensely. Let us keep weapons, talismans and trinkets, satchels and clothes and just let us farm animals for the camp upgrades and money. I know it would be an easier run compared to the ones when one start with nothing but it would also be a more fun experience in my opinion and if ones does not like the idea, they can always just play the story from the start like normal.

I for one would love to have all my pimped outfits and guns from the start, not because they are that much better but because they look way cooler and I am not competing with anyone in a single player game after all.

Sorry for a wall of text but I just found out I obviously had a lot on my mind that I needed to share. 🙂

I get what you are saying, I do too have OCD but not as much as it normally controls my life in any big way. But it do influence how I play games and what is small things for others becomes huge things for me. I have learned to just push through the pain of some things but the damn satchels in this game is a must for me to have in chapter 2 before I start to seriously do any yellow missions at all since the “Legendary Satchel of the East” is so much better than all the rest. I am really clinical when it comes to having all my weapons in top condition and I cannot endure not cleaning them even after just shooting one shot if the battle has ended, they need to be as clear as can be after any shootout I encounter. I also have this compulsion that I cannot miss any point of interest so I need to collect all the little paintings and writings in the journal and I do all that is possible to do before then epilogue as the quality of the journal really is not the same after J gets it from A.

I would love love to be able to enjoy the game with the ordinary satchel with place for 5 gun oils or is it ten? I have honestly forgot since I rush to get the best satchel and that sweet room for 99 gun oils! Then I can clean my guns as much as I want to and I always refill my gun oil to 99 every time I meet a trapper or enters a town.

I did fully upgraded my camp and satchel in chapter 2 before Arthur gets his infection. You need patience. One animal was a nightmare. The moose. I want to help. There a two kind of spawning. A random spawn and a "event" spawn. Event spawns are like a bear gets attacked by three wolfs or a fox chase a rabbit. All that are scripted events. And there is a male moose as a special event spawn staying on a rock.

This video helped me to find a male moose. I hunted that moose over 5 days and over 200 baits. No luck, just only female mooses without the hornthing. But this video helps me alot. After killing him. Use a stamina tonic for the horse and ride to the moose fast. Mark the moose to get the path on your minimap .

I just got totally lucky with a bull moose at Owanjila Dam. I was on the west side of the lake (south of where that fisherman guy usually is) and I was looking for beavers. Lo and behold, a big freaking moose just practically trucked me. Got a perfect kill and lucky one.

The panther vexes me on this go-around. Can't get it perfect in the usual spot.

I've always been looking for Pristine. I see the Owanjila moose all the time. And I've seen them at Cattail pond tons. I'm just an idiot I guess.

I assume you mean the Fen for the panther?  I almost always have to use the higher level predator bait and a scoped rifle while lathered in cover scent to get the clean kill. The higher level bait helps ensure that the animal is pristine.

It's funny. The cougars out west or north I have less bad luck getting the clean kill, even with improved arrows or from horseback. But that panther is nasty surprising. :)

Of course I have had much more practice on the cougars due to needing more pelts as compared to the panther, and, I'm on foot much more often so the horse can't warn me. maybe that explains it.

The good thing about the moose is you don't need a perfect pelt to get the camp upgrade, just the anlters which goes into your inventory once skinning it. Funny thing the day after I made that post I found a Moose in Owanjila. This is the longest it took for me, previous playthroughs it would spawn the 2d or 3rd time I went there. Took a few more tries this time but I got it.

I need three Moose for the trapper outfits I want and I have not seen one single Moose yet, after finishing most trapper items.

But I hunt exclusively around Big Valley, Black Bone Forest and the Owanjila Dam.

I found a big male moose by one of the lakes north of Rhoads.

Killed him, turned in the antlers and sold pelt. Went back to lake (because I was really looking for beavers) and there he was again at the same spot. Took him down again. Two moose in less than 15 minutes...

Southfield Flats?

Mattock Ponds?

Eris Fields? I've not paid a ton of attention in those areas, but have never seen beaver, or moose.   What time of day?

I've been looking for someone like you! Last time I tried to finally finish my OCD playthrough, it resulted in a tragedy (I posted about it here: https://gtaforums.com/topic/926541-need-to-vent-and-ask-for-advice-my-ocds-greed-shot-itself-in-the-leg/). In case you don't have the time or the will to read the full thing, TL;DR: went for LotE satchel early in Chapter 2, returned to see that the Castor's Ridge event area progressed to the next step due to time passing or something (like doing a specific action like zone reloads or random events) happening a specific amount of times. My last 'completed' step was saving them from the bandits, and after my Lemoyne trip for LotE, I returned to see a finished house. Haven't even visited the Appleseed at that point yet.

Since that day, I posted that thread, found some moral support from some great people in that thread, but haven't returned to RDR2 yet. Until just yesterday, and right now I'm going through the 'preparation' phase, and I found this discussion just on time.

So... I just want to ask you and the other gentlemen mentioning going for LotE early: have you personally encountered any issues like the ones I describe with any of the three event areas in the game (Castor's, Appleseed, and Central Union Railroad) during/after your trip for LotE? If not, do you remember how you go about Castor's Ridge specifically? Do you initiate the very first step before doing the far trips for the Panther and Iguana, do you complete the event together with Appleseed (I assume no OCD-cursed person would choose the 'give 100$' option - I'm almost certain every single one of us chooses to get the wood from the Appleseed Co. for the 'fullest experience'), or do you completely ignore it and try to tread far away from it in order to not trigger anything? (I have a feeling that completing the Jimmy Brooks mission puts you too close to the house and something just might trigger during that moment)

I plan on starting tomorrow, hopefully some of you guys see this before then!

I went to get the lumber from Appleseed.

He wanted $75 - i took it as an insult and murdered him, then stole the lumber and delivered it to the house.

Now when I go back to Appleseed (still in chapter 2) the entire area is a ghost town - no one is there.

Well, I am sad to say this... But as I have completed the game six times now, I have found out the hard way, very hard way, that sometimes the castors ridge, Appleseed lumber and/or the railroad company my bug and skip stages. Other play throughs they work just as intended. I try not to start then until I have the LotE satchel but if I trigger them, they mostly will not skip stages until I go back but sometimes they do and it drives me crazy.

I become crazy when things becomes bugged and I do not have the chance to repair it. For instance the exterminate rat mission in St Denis bugged for me. I somehow became wanted for something I have no idea of while shooting the rats and the owner ran away instead of rewarding me. So the second stage never triggered and that play through was totally destroyed and I started all over.

I hope this helps helps a little at least.

Have you ever considered saving the game before you start to do anything and just reloading that save if something goes unexpected?

I assume if you are this OCD that you have auto-save turned off (I know I do).

I may have OCD but I am also reckless and sometimes lazy, it is not a good combination. So to answer your question, now I save more or less all the time but the first few play throughs I did not. It was of course stupid of me to not save more often than I did but I learned my lesson the hard way. I hate the auto-save, it truly feels that it exist purely to troll me.
