You forgot about LCS and VCS.

Also what's the point of this thread?

Yes.

And that's a GOOD THING.

More time between instalments will inevitably result in a more polished and content rich product.

I never understood why it is brought up as criticism.

People don't understand the real value of hard developer work nowadays. For them it's normal to play the conveyor games each year or two.

If we want bigger game, deeper game, market-changing game with modern graphic and great story - we must wait.

As for the gta6, my bet is 8 years which is ~2800-2900 days.

Movies go a pretty long time between sequels sometimes, and no one ever complains.

20+ years between Star Wars episode VI and the first prequel. Almost 10 years between Toy Story 3 and 4. Literally 30 years between Mad Max movies. Etc

That would put it at 2021, and IF they have the same 2 year gap between announcement and release, they'd have to announce it this year. Only 12 months after RDR2. Don't you think that's a bit soon? I just can't help but think that it's gonna be 5 years after RDR2, 2023

Cyperpunk - 8 years (2012 - 2020)
Fallout 3 - 10 years
Fallout 4 - 7 years
etc.

RDR2 was originally planned on 2017, if I'm not mistaken.
Let's say, R* will announce GTA6 next year. If they will not delay, it's the end of 2021. If they delay - we'll get 2 years of waiting and 2022.

Online gaming changed the business. Online games will have much longer life spawn if well made and popular. It´s the case for GTA.

It was fall 2017, yeah.

And just on those game examples you used,

Cyberpunk 2077 was announced in May 2012, so the 8 year gap is between announcement and release. This is the very first Cyberpunk video game, I believe.

Fallout 3 was 10 years after Fallout 2, true. But Interplay developed Fallout 2, and Bethesda acquired the license to make Fallout 3, after Interplays financial difficulties.

Fallout 4 was 7 years, but BGS were busy in between with Skyrim.

Point being all those examples have one thing in common, those studios were working on games in between. The Witcher 3, in between Cyberpunk announcement and release.

Fallout 3 was a different studio, Interplay cancelled their Fallout 3 'Van Buren' and BGS was doing Morrowind and Oblivion (and a drag racing game lol)

And Skyrim in between Fallout 3 and 4. But Obsidian did Fallout New Vegas while BGS were busy.

I think it's the same with Rockstar. it's unfair to count years between GTA V & VI. But rather the years between RDR2 and GTA VI.

Can't disagree) Solid point.

Then, let's say, it will be an average time gap ~1600 days = 4 years.
Then, it's fall, 2022, 2 years after next.gen. consoles launch. Enough time to polish the game.

I agree there. Still gonna stick with my 2021 announcement - 23 release. But that's the timeframe for sure. Yet still, the rumours/leaks starting around 2017 does put that seed of doubt in your mind lol. As much as I believe this, I'll still head into October this year thinking, "maybe, just maybe..." 😂

It's weird how you count the expansion for GTA1, but not expansions for GTA4.

Also, can't help remembering this gem.

Us GTA fans can get a little crazy, when waiting for out next dose of Grand Theft Auto...

But yeah. History does not determine the future. But it's all we can really do. I try to be sensible out it, though. In this instance, I think the logic is as sound as it can be. Next gen development might slow it down a bit, too, though. Only recently will the know the final specs that they develop for.

I think it will be announced later this year and released 2021. So an 8 year gap. 3 years extra for the development time needed for a more complex game for PS5.

Quality over quantity. If GTAs were released annually like Call of Duty titles, for example, the premise, function and gameplay of the series would grow redundant real quick. The fact that R* paces themselves during development has been and continues to be the key to GTA’s longevity and critical acclaim throughout these past 20 years.

Forgot to mention this. I agree, but only to a point. We waited 5 and a half years between GTA IV & V. That was part of what made that game so special for us. It felt like forever. Now it has been 6 years, at least. In hindsight, GTA IV had 2 substantial expansions, giving us single player fans a reason to keep playing so long. The time between TBoGT and V's announcement was only 2 years. Which, when you think about it... it's pretty crazy a two year wait lead to where we were back in 2011.

But I think there's a sweet spot. Waiting too long can be bad. Risk leading to overhyping and high expectations. Or perhaps your life has moved on and you won't have the time like you used to. Imagine waiting over a decade for TES 6, if you're a fan of that series. I don't think it's great  waiting that long. Personally I think 5 years is that sweet spot. The problem is with GTA, Rockstar constantly talks about GTA Online. So GTA hasn't felt like it's gone away. I don't have that same feeling of 'missing' GTA just yet.

Tl;Dr Waiting a long time is essential. Just not 'too' long

Well it has to be teased this year  during PlayStation's pst reveal event.

Multiple leaks already suggest Liberty City and Vice City are the official locations.

Take Two announced that the next GTA story is shorter, so they basically hint the story is being developed now.

We know they are hiring like its rush hour time and that sexual predator that was harassing R* employees that wanted better Rdr2 gameplay is gone.

Only thing left is for beta/alpha game testers to figure out if the Story and Online is ready for a release date, likely 2021 or 2023.

We all know it aint coming out ndxt year, so it already delayed by 1 year!

No, they didn't.

Strauss Zelnick only said this:

Quote

"It's possible that games may be a bit shorter than they were in certain instances, It's possible that the ability to deliver content on an ongoing basis for a long time after an initial release of a hit would mean that perhaps that initial release wouldn't be as long in terms of number of hours of gameplay as previously had been demanded in a world where that was all you were getting."

Of course Take Two's ongoing games are pretty much GTA Online and RD Online. So I can see why people are jumping to that conclusion. But guess what, A very similar thing happened before GTA V released. They said that'd be shorter than GTA IV, too. It was, but not by a lot. They just cut out a lot of the early 'boring stuff' (which I actually liked)

Cause Xbox's next gen gaming console is releasing holiday day season  2020 and PlayStation are their top rival.

PlayStation wouldn't like gthe idea of games losing value and get sold on PS5 by 20%or more off.

They likely aim to release the PS5 a month early or a month late to sell games at launch value.

Rockstar always deliver very high quality games, so obviously they take much more time to make, and games nowadays are not simple as the old ones

The more complex technology becomes the longer development cycles are. R* are obviously still interested in delivering the best quality possible. Sure they could churn them out every couple of years, but the quality would suffer greatly.

I didn't mind waiting 8 years for RDR2 as it's a masterpiece.

When it takes to short to make a game , they will cut the quality and people will be bitching and moaning . If you want a high quality and carefully developed game ,  you might have to wait .

Here's the thing though. While yes, we waited 8 and a half years. I never really felt like I waited 8 years. We had L.A. Noire, Max Payne 3 & GTA V in between. I guess I'm a Rockstar fan, and having other Rockstar games to play helps ease the wait? This time we've only had RDR2 and that took 5 years, after GTA V. There's been many GTA Online updates, but I don't really enjoy Online.

Games are constantly becoming more complex graphically and behaviorally, and therefore they need larger teams and longer times to finish projects, especially when considering a game of a scale as Grand Theft Auto. Sure there are also new tools that are used to speed up development in certain aspects, but automated results usually don't have the same artistic touch as when it's done by a human from scratch. R* continuously expanding its development team is a symptom of that.

So far I haven't minded the wait between games but at this point we're looking at close to a decade between GTA V and VI. It's hard to imagine Rockstar innovating the franchise enough to justify that long of a wait. The production values will likely be top notch and the story will be great but I assume it'l still play like a slightly upgraded GTA IV.

I don't mind the wait as long as they release a good game. Comparing GTA 4 to V, GTA 4 had the better story for me but hopefully this time they can improve.

Also I would like them to release an actual playable/fun multiplayer on release for once so I don't mind them taking some time for that
