Hmmm Beer

From what chapter / mission do you free roam as Arthur?

Recommended Posts

Hmmm Beer

Have played the game through and been free roaming as John for quite a while now.

Thought I would start a second play-through which I'm enjoying, especially free-roaming as Arthur, for various reasons but not least because of the stranger / interaction opportunities being so much more frequent.

I'm currently in chapter 2, the only story mission being available currently is the Thomas Downes one (yeah, THAT one). I've got a Schofield (looted from a cabin) and also the Lancaster (from Rhodes gunsmith) so I'm sorted for guns as they are my favourites. Dead eye is at the 'tag enemies' level so I'm also happy with that.

Just wondering where you guys stop and free roam? There seems to be debate whether it's best done in chapters, 2, 3 or even 4. I like the fact that at the point where I am Arthur has not been infected, and the O'Driscoll boys are still around for the killing.

Thoughts?

Long answer shortened up. :)

Right where you are now. That is the prime free roam time period for me. it lacks fishing, but that is ok. Once you get to chapter 3 you can start free roam with fishing.

Before Moneylending III.

Before (or after) We loved Once and True.

But the big one for me is before "A Quiet time".

The Pinkertons are around for that. I don't like to free roam / get to far from Camp with the heat this close. Once I've got all the satchels, most if not all of the upgrades, and I'm 'finished' free-roaming I'll end my free roam in chapter 2 to meet with Downes and Mary, drink with Lenny, deal with Micah, go fishing with Jack, rob the train with John, etc. then move to Clemmons Point before resuming free roam.

Thanks for that, some good ideas there. I am fishing because I've done the Jack mission, also seen Mary and rescued her brother.

No sign of the Pinkertons (again) yet ;)

I typically free roam throughout Chapter 2 and Chapter 3. If I had to pick a spot for Arthur to free roam in his own "endless summer," it would likely be before Blessed Are the Peacemakers with every other mission done. I think that way most people are present at camp and I can ignore Micah.

Chapter 4 with only the mission "American Fathers II" available

It is the only time in the game that none of your gang members have a mission for you and are all at camp

That was part of my bit shortened.

I don't mind doing the free roam after Mary. Or even after Downes for that matter.  It doesn't matter to me if he has TB or not for the Free Roam.

But I don't like it during/ between any of the Pouring Forth the Oil missions since then John is waiting on "Me". And I'm less happy / able to do it after dealing with Micah and the raising a big rukus that involved. I prefer to still be less well known during that first free roam.

Then as I said I mission it up to close out Chapter 2, do a few then go back to free roaming with fish. Eventually I close out chapter 3 and then after a mission or two in chapter 4 I start free roaming again. To the point where Dutch starts sending guys out for me.

At some point in Chapter 4/5/6 late chapter 4 it seems . I just feel compelled to do the story missions and end it all.

Sure the major side missions I still do (Except the hunting one with Hamish, I don't need Buell that badly.) But the story takes a hold and I just follow/finish it if that makes sense.

But that is just my own feeling, frankly nearly anytime could be argued as a reasonable time to free roam if you wanted to. Depends on how you treat it eh?

Yeah exactly, 'best time' is going to be a subjective term.

Fun though, isn't it? :)

I'm still on my first playthrough, sadly i was spoiled... but thanks, i was spoiled that's why I'm still in Chaptor 2. I take alot time. I really like my playstyle: I play all sidemission, challanges & activities before the story mission.  For me the story mission are highlights and i free roam all the time. I play like one mission per real life day..  I'm still in Chaptor 2 and it's crazy how many details this game has. I read every stuff, i explore every corner.

I start free roaming half way through Chapter 2, I go after the gold bars, Limpany, Train Wreck etc and start the Stranger and Treasure Hunt Missions.

I also do a bit free roaming when the Gang moves to Clemens Cove, but before starting the Gray/Braithwaite Missions

I’m on my 2nd playthrough after 100%’ed the game. Do you guys remember if early on chapter 3 is it possible to draw weapons in Rhodes? I’ve stayed a while on chapter 2, unlocked the LoTE satchel but I’m missing the rolling block because of the long scope (springfield goes maximum to medium) and the ability to paint targets with dead eye, so I’m considering moving to chapter 3.

Hmm, that's odd. I got that level of dead eye in Chapter 2 (after the last Pouring forth oil mission) and then the rolling block rifle came during the sheep and the goats, which does really mark the end of chapter two. The mission I left for ages was the debt collection one with Thomas Downes. I still have a save before that point, so I do have dead eye 'paint' available at that point, but not the rifle.

If you do Dutch's mission at the start of chapter 3 (and the game wants you to, you only have to walk near him for it to start automatically) you then can't use weapons in Rhodes.

Would be useful to know - if anyone does on this thread - which mission unlocks guns in Rhodes again.

To echo the previous comments, right there in Chapter 2 is the sweet spot. Before the Thomas Downes mission.

Use Chapter 2 to exploit all that you can. Get the Legend of the East satchel, make some dough, work on maxing out your deadeye and build experience, hunt your a** off. You can do the collectibles at same time as well and challenges. Especially go after the Legendary Animals and try to get the trinkets and talismans as much as you can.

To @Hmmm Beer's point, ditto on having dead eye "paint" advanced level dead eye but not Rolling Block. Boy, does that make a difference when you raid enemy camps. And I haven't rescued Sean yet so having an advanced dead eye will help there too.

You English are a right dirty sort of lot, leaving a poor Irish lad to rot while you go galivanting about for your own gain.  (read that in Sean's voice) :)

-If you've not heard Sean's voice yet, then maybe we need to talk. lol.

The scene where Arthur cut's Sean down and the following speech might be my most favorite lines in the game.

I won't free-roam before rescuing Sean. I love the bugger too much.

F*** R* .

Yeah dude. I'm having super slow play through too. Playing lots of free-roam. Only just started Chapter 5 for the first time.

I would have been perfectly happy keeping Micah in the Strawberry jail forever and ever, but you have to break him out if you want to unlock fishing. So now I have to make due with keeping Micah parked above Monto's Rest in self-imposed exile for as long as I can.

You can unlock fishing before rescuing Micah from jail.

Fisher of Men is the mission that unlocks fishing. This mission is unlocked after completing A Quiet Time and Pouring Forth Oil III, which do not have Blessed are the Meek? as it's predecessor.

I'd say the best time for this is after rescuing Sean and reading Mary's letter first and then doing the 1st debt mission unlocking the camp upgrades and before rescuing Micah

If you do the debt mission first and then Rescue sean or read the letter then the game will force you into beating up Downes and without Micah the camp moral is happy
