What Song Is Currently Stuck In Your Head?

It's not a problem anymore, but I wanted to share an earworm I had recently that had a bit of an eerie background to it.

For weeks and weeks, I've had this melody in my head. Usually the cure is simply listening to the song, but this grows complicated when you don't know the song. It's usually no big deal, because eventually your subconscious takes over and you wind up playing enough of the song in your head for you to tangibly search for it. I must get them a few times a year, aside from the more casual ones that are easily solved by pulling up your music library or Spotify to cleanse yourself. However, this was much bigger - all I had was a melody, and it started thanks to a song by LFO called Track 14. I knew I'd heard that opening melody somewhere before, or at least something similar to it, enough for me to latch onto it and hum it. I first thought it was a cheeky sample, but after an evening of digging I came up with nothing, other than a curious connection to Prince. I'm a huge fan of his, so I knew that wasn't it because I'd have recognised it.

Weeks trickled past. Every now and again it would play in my head. At first I didn't even know what instrument was playing it. I had narrowed it down to either woodwind or brass, or strings, real or synthesised. This didn't narrow my search any. In fact, it made it worse. The more words you throw into a search engine, the more off-course you tend to stray. It took me to a quiz where you could see what vegetable you'd be. I got parsnip.

Yesterday I had had enough. I hopped on the GTAF Discord and in desperation, I recorded my own voice humming it. I shared it, and unfortunately nobody could help. This humming must have unlocked part of the code, because I immediately decided to open my music library and manually trawl it, hoping the sight of album artwork might jog my memory. I didn't have to look far, because it turns out the melody was from an EP called El Producto by Australian sample titans The Avalanches. The song was called "Rolling High" and while it brings me some relief to share it here (the timestamp is 1:40 if you even give two knobs of goat sh*t at this point) but something still didn't feel right. Sure, this was the song that I was thinking of... but it also wasn't. There was more to it.

Almost immediately after hearing it properly, I knew. I f*cking knew it. It was "Trans Europa Express" by Kraftwerk. Further relief crept over my skin like a fine ooze. I was finally free.

Not five minutes after, I saw the news that one of the founding fathers of the group Florian Schneider had died. It seemed like such a tragic coincidence that the day I resolve this earworm which had dominated an entire month or so was the day one of the men responsible for it shuffled off this mortal coil.

This song is one of the few songs from a talent show that actually made me sit up and take notice. I always have a little moment whenever I hear it start up, and the chorus... wow. Just beautiful.

There's a good chance you heard Afrika Baambaatas' version of it. In turn that's why Krafwerk get credited for inspiring a huge chunk of Electro-funk/Hip Hop. Because Afrika Bambaata took the beat from Numbers and mixed it with Trans Europe Express for Planet Rock. Although guys like Cybotron/Juan Atkins were had tracks like Clear out (a few years before Planet Rock) which was just an obvious Kraftwerk inspired track but would have been staples of Electro-Funk/Breakdancing/Hip Hop scene.

I feel your pain when you have some nagging melody stuck in your head. I have a similar story to yours I'll post later. Good thing you found it!

I was stuck until 'Age of Grotesque' album and I never had interest to listening Marilyn Manson again since 2006 until this year with their new album and giving him a chance to the last albums but this song has been rotating my playlist a lot.
