He would have been born in what was then known as Yugoslavia and all signs seem to point towards a Serbian origin as others have pointed out. His surname has a strange spelling though; it's Belić in Serbian and Croatian families and if I'm not mistaken, the name Niko is more common in Croatia. I think R* purposely tried to make it a bit vague though, but it's obvious that he's from that part of the world and is most definitely not Russian.

I suppose people who just play the online modes and don't give the single player story a chance could be slightly annoying, but seeing how gaming is nowadays it's likely to be normal for everything eventually.

I just wish content could be shared between single player and online. Missions etc for online can stay online, but the cars weapons and other stuff would be welcome in single player.

Yeah true, they did deliberately make it somewhat ambiguous but I think since he speaks Serbian (and refers to it as Serbian - I've seen debate about it possibly being Croatian etc since the languages are very similar but since it was called Serbian by Roman in the first scene I think that clears it up) it's clear he's a Serb. Although that doesn't necessarily mean from Serbia, he could be a Bosnian Serb and atrocities happening in his home village actually points more towards that than being from Serbia itself. R* acts like they made it so he could be from anywhere in the Balkans but really they did pinpoint it more than that in the game. I think the name is just that way because they wanted a name that's simple to read and pronounce for English speakers. Many people who move to English speaking countries "Anglicize" their name by altering the spelling or going by a shortened version etc so it can kind of be reasonably explained in-game by assuming that happened.

I guess maybe part of the Russian confusion comes because they'd considered a Russian actor for the role, and also because of the Russian radio station and that Seryoga song called Liberty City: The Invasion that's about a Russian coming to Liberty City, as well as characters in the game incorrectly calling him Russian. But yeah he obviously isn't lol

It's not something I really hate but when I see players who try to replace a Black main characer with a White one, especially since I never saw any mod to make Claude or Tommy Black, instead of evolving and understanding a person's value doesn't depend on the color I find it pathetic.

he's technically from Yugoslavia.

He speaks serbian, so people assume he's Serbian, which is like saying that since everyone in this Forums speaks English, so everyone must be from UK or USA.

It's not quite the same as that since unlike with English only people from a select few countries outside Serbia (and even then mostly only people who are ethnically Serbian in those countries) speak Serbian as a primary language. I think the fact he speaks Serbian and the timing of his involvement in wars that we hear about in the game makes it very likely he's either from Serbia or Bosnia and ethnically Serb either way, rather than all former Yugoslavian countries being equally likely. It's correct to say he's from the former Yugoslavia and not necessarily from Serbia itself but it's also still correct to say that he's Serbian/a Serb, he'd be speaking another Serbo-Croatian language (eg Croatian or Bosnian) with Roman and not referring to it as Serbian otherwise.

I feel the same about this as well. I even write GTA 1 and GTA 2 as GTA I and GTA II (even though the latter game's cover states it as "GTA 2"). I surely don't pronounce them as "eye", "eye eye" nor "eye eye eye" for GTA III, though, as opposed to "eye vee" for GTA IV and "vee" for GTA V.

facts about casual gta fans that make me hate them

  • only plays online mode and dosent give a sh*t about single player.
  • thinks that a towel on the beach in gta 5 that says vice city on it means gta 6 is going to be in vice city.
  • thinks some painting on mt chiliad means theres some huge mystery about mt chiliad.
  • bunch of washed up cod fanboys dress their gta online characters in military outfits and say how bad everyone else is at the game because they think that they are better at the game because they have a better KD ratio
  • idiots who cant understand how the universes work and think cj is in gta 5

I mean they did deliberately put in an easter egg where it looks like CJ & pals are riding past on bikes on Grove Street in a mission. Also the "rules" for how the universes work are arbitrary and inconsistent, with several characters appearing in both universes. BUT IT DOESN'T COUNT BECAUSE THEY'RE ON THE RADIO AND YOU DON'T SEE THEM! - what logic is this based on? It's still the exact same character in both universes. So I can't blame people for this.

Same with the Chiliad thing. In GTA V they purposely included a whole bunch of mysterious stuff to get people speculating (eg grafitti on Mount Chiliad that indicates a UFO when there's a storm at night, which indeed does appear when you reach 100%). They not only put in hints to make people think there might be supernatural things (as they had in SA), this time they went as far as actually including supernatural things to reward people for thinking that (multiples UFOs, strange lights, mysterious hatches with morse code sounds, Bigfoot, a ghost, ability to transform into a bird etc). It can be annoying when people continue to speculate about things that clearly aren't there/don't mean anything but R* is to blame for it.

WAIT! It CAN'T happen?! I always thought something like that might be annoying and is a valuable reason to tone down friends calling you but hearing that... you don't even get called in GTA V singleplayers!

Nah. It's more of a general thing.

I don't mind if some people don't value a story as much as others do, but it's the patronising attitude that grinds my gears the most. This isn't necessarily GTA specific either, but for games as whole.

I really want to know if you can get one while you're wanted now, I can't remember it happening either but not sure. I have received (and answered and completed) phone calls from Roman and other friends while in a car flying at top speed high above Broker and crashing back to Earth into a crumpled wreck from the swingset glitch on more than one occasion though lol. Also it would actually be hilarious to get a bowling call when in a 6 star police chase, I certainly wouldn't be complaining about it.

The meme is overdone but there is some truth to it in that generally when you're playing the game you're trying to do something and often it's something criminal. So you can sometimes get friends calls at weird moments (when you're about to go on a killing spree etc etc). Plus there's the thing where they're scripted to call you at inopportune moments during certain missions for comic effect, it might mostly come from that. It's almost like they knew it would be a thing the way they did that.

@SonOfLiberty

Good to hear that actually, not only since I've always tried to be in the  opposite of shallow and short sighted, but somehow because there are other people that find the story aspect a bit too over exaggerated as well.

I'm of a firm belief that the gameplay should be above the story in some sense though - GTA should have that as a top priority, imho - and that's without regards to how good the story itself is. For example, if the next GTA had the very best story ever told, its gameplay still should have provide 10 percent more. Especially outside the closely tied missions.

" Graphics<Story<Gameplay ". HDU games are without any doubt tied to their stories more than they should be to the gameplay aspect and hence there's a practical feeling of watching the movie and not playing the game. It's kind of depressing seeing how good everything tied to story and narrative is, how polished and deep it really is and how negligent the approach to gameplay seems on the other side, in roughly more than 50 percent of things that make the gameplay part of the game.

Believe it or not, I really like every single story told in HDU, I just hate the discrepancy such great stories create in comparison to way weaker gameplay they possess. Sometimes the gameplay would seem like it has been made by EA. It's like the creators wanted to give us no reason to get back in there after finishing the main story line.

Fair enough, but all the years I've been on this forum I have seen my fair share of people who really seem to get angry with the notion of anyone actually enjoying a story in a video game. I agree the gameplay should be the priority, but I'm mostly talking about the people who still hang onto the stone age belief video games can't or shouldn't have stories or that watching a movie or reading a book is the only way to experience one.

Pft, I think that referring to stone age definitely cannot properly describe how backwards they are then. I'm sure in those times, story telling was the only form of entertainment, lol, despite not even having a written language of sorts or if we exclude hunting.

What's more, there's even an argument that we are 'genetically' predisposed to hearing a good story, so there's that.

It's just that video games are supposed to be the medium that should have roots and its enternity in concepts, mechanics, physics and whatnot, that comprise gameplay and as such to be the primary thing. Story might be the most important thing that comes next, 'cause honestly, not every game needs a story and every story simply isn't tied to a game. On the other hand, no video game can be a video game, if there's nothing to play.

In case of GTA, story aspect is probably gone a bit too far, which could be my personal view, but objectively, there's a sense of deteorating gameplay which deepens the discrepancy between the two and makes the latter way inferior in a way that the entire game ends up looking like a movie.
