Do bombs actually help during missions?

Just curious. Recently started a new playthrough of IV and I wanted to try a different approach with missions instead of just going in guns blazing.

I really liked the Packie bomb feature and it should be in the next GTA.

The only one I'm aware of where it's properly useful is Dining Out. When you arrive at the Korean restaurant there's a car parked around the back that the guy uses for the getaway (I think it appears after you enter the marker outside the restaurant). So I arrive with a car bomb from Packie ready and before I go inside I stick it on the car. Then after the shootout when he jumps in the car and tries to escape there's no need to chase him, just get my phone out and boom.

I've tried it in other missions just as an extra explosive device but because it requires being on the phone long enough to detonate it (which isn't easy if you're being shot at since being hit makes you hang up) and the whole process of making the call and then waiting for it to detonate takes a while I haven't found it very helpful. Like I tried driving up to the car dealership with a rigged car in Payback and then running back and trying to detonate it, but because of being shot at and how long it takes there wasn't any point really, chucking in a grenade would do a better job.

I don't know if there's any missions other than Dining Out where you can use it attached to an enemy's or your own car covertly. I'm thinking possibly Pest Control if Ray's car is available before he enters it (don't know if it is though) or if you drove ahead to the gas station with a rigged car, parked it and hid and detonated it when he arrived. Haven't tried it though.

We should have had sticky bombs instead tbh. Would've been really useful for Assassination type missions.

I mean if there's a chance to use one on an enemy's car covertly, where you can approach it and put one on it without anyone knowing and detonate it by surprise, then it's almost the same as a sticky bomb with the only difference being you have to make a phone call instead of pressing a button. The issue is more that there's not many opportunities to get to an enemy's car before they enter it/without them knowing in missions. Like V has sticky bombs but I can't remember ever using them secretly in missions there either (except that one where you blow up The Lost's trailers) for the same reason, you just don't get chances to.

My main use for car bombs is blowing up security vans to pick up $10,000 with no ammo expenses and no wanted level. As well as to commit random acts of terrorism against peds/police without a wanted level 😛. The no wanted level thing is the one advantage it has over sticky bombs.

I'm sure we could find plenty of use for it. The good thing about sticky bombs in V is that they don't disappear if you go all the way to the other side of the map I believe. So imagine before the mission "Shadow" You go to the room where the dealer escapes to and plant a bomb and the BOOM! when he goes there in the mission. Or we could use it on Petrovic's car in the mission "Final Destination". Good thing is you don't have to hang out with people to unlock it and also no need to call to activate it. Convenient and fun.

Yeah would've been cool to have for sure! They're more versatile and convenient. Although I think in V sticky bombs disappear if there's a cutscene (unlike IV car bombs )so they'd have to get rid of that aspect  Would've been more useful in IV than V really.

Go to where the cars are parked (don't drive onto the destinaton market yet, or you'll trigger them walking out and driving away) and just plant the bomb on the middle car? Bonus points for doing it while they stop at the gas station.

Awesome thanks, I didn't know if it was possible to get access to the car before going to the marker or not. That will beat my usual rocket launcher at the gas station. Or I might try doing it as late as I can as he approaches his destination.

I'm trying to think if there's any other times something similar to that could be done, hmm. I wonder if you could pop one on that Blista Compact in Jeff's second encounter and dispose of it and its contents that way.

I killed Ray Boccino using the bomb option by calling up Packie. It was kind of a fitting mob style type hit if you think about it.
