The Radar Off Experience.

Navigating this amazing world with the radar turned off is a whole different experience, especially for players who don’t know the map like the back of their hand. With no map to guide you, you are forced to use road signs and land marks to navigate the world. Getting lost up in the grizzlies was an adventure for me. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west, that becomes a key navigational tool. If you are still learning the map, I advise you to give the Radar Off Experience a try. It’s a whole different animal.

Heh, I remember making this exact topic for assassin creed and even GTAV/O.

Glad you reminded me, and this has such a great mechanic there is no excuse for not using it.

And even better experience is to not use online guides for looking up animals and other locations, you gotta find posses in game that will help you with this.

Thanks again, I vouch this. Not for everyone of course.

I love hunting panthers in first person without the radar (and without eagle eye)

You're not a true hunter before you've scored a 3 star panther that way.

I do not think that the missions are very no-minimap friendly like they were in SP though.

I do it when I am alone or not in a posse
Its amazing how fast you recognize certain areas
And there is a huge plus side with this, enjoying the enviroment much more

Did this a lot in single player while hunting. I'd show up back at camp like a month later and they'd all be starving and crying about the money box.....what a game.

I don't do it online though, gotta keep an eye out for hideouts.

It’s great to break the habit of having my eyes constantly glued to the radar. I’m probably missing so many interesting details when always on the lookout for player blips and other markers - but thanks to defensive mode that concern has been alleviated somewhat. Turning it off every so often allows me to become more immersed in the game world for sure.

I like to keep the minimap up to see other players but I've been playing without waypoints lately in an effort to learn the map better, and riding cross country to figure out routes that might let me escape pursuers someday. Definitely something I'd recommend giving a try.

I know my own limitations. I have the navigation skills of a pebble stone and roaming the world without the minimap would result into disaster. I'd never get where I need to go. Tried the middle way by not setting waypoints at all a few times, resulting me ending up near Brandywine Drop instead of Valentine after thinking the woods were the ones leading me to Rhodes and all I had to do is go north from there...., yeah, right.

Mind you, I am also infamous for driving the wrong way even with my car navigation on. I've missed quite a few off-ramps for misinterpreting the indications on screen. If I have to complete the daily challenges without a map, it will indeed take me a day to get even 1 done. :D :D

Yep I started playing this way months ago and never went back. My mini-map is only on during missions. If I feel lost then I stop and open the map. Total immersion. At night I pull out a lantern to see road signs, if I'm out travelling. It's amazing how much more fun it is playing without the mini-map.

I'm trying as we speak to do a hunting excursion in this mode and it is indeed quite a different experience. One thing I do wish however is that R* adds a compass to the game. Something you either can buy or loot. And view the same way as you can do with the pocket watch.

I love maps, but hate gps. I havent thought about turning the minimap off tho. Think Im gonna try that lifestyle. Im probably gonna turn it back on tho as I like to watch my back too. Im going offensive mode just to live the wild west style and be ready for any gunfight that may happen. I try to not instigate them usually tho. I could most likely run away from outlaws without a radar, I know the land very well. But I like the advantage of knowing where they coming from tho.

Part of me wants to try playing with no map and also removing overhead player names to make it all more immersive. It would be awesome but it would also put me at a huge disadvantage, especially in instances when trying to spot/snipe players at long range. If it was all mutual I’d try it in a heartbeat, but not with how it currently is.

Considering how quick it is to hide the minimap though, I sometimes do that when I’m alone in the wild but never long enough to really sink into it.

Companion app is really good for this, you open up the screen and see more of the world without that little distraction in the corner, but then if I need a bit of a heading I look at the app map instead of having to bring it up in game. Can also keep track of other players exact locations in the visible blip area.
