I often wondered this myself. I don't think there is, just two pop stations?

I think just the marketing. Head Radio is the one that claims to play "rock", while both stations still play pop music.

Here's an earlier thread about the topic that I found BTW:

Head Radio plays pop with a more downbeat/depressing undertone.

Lips plays pop with a more cheerful uplifting/flamboyant undertone.

The difference is that Lips has the song Grand Theft Auto by Da Shootaz :D. I think that we should also think about the topic why they didn't include Darude - Sandstorm in Rise FM.

Well they probably didn't have enough money to license such music then but it baffles me that there was no alternative or hard rock like how there was in 1 and 2

GTA3 actually didn't use that much in terms of popular music per say:

  • Head Radio, Lips 106 and Chatterbox were all produced in house.
  • Double Clef FM is all public domain renditions of classical songs.
  • K-Jah is all tracks from Scientist's 1981 album "Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires"
  • Flashback is all tracks from the Scarface soundtrack (probably the most commercial tracks in the game), and were also all produced by Giorgio Moroder who later provided the soundtrack for the LCS rendition of Flashback.
  • MSX FM is all tracks from the UK based Moving Shadow record label, with the radio station itself being a shorter version of DJ Timecode's 01.1 mix, hosted by MC Codebreaker.
  • Rise FM is all tracks from a short lived Chicago record label named Generation Records.
  • Game Radio is all tracks from New York based record label Game Recordings, and the show is hosted by Stretch Armstrong from Stretch & Bobbito (legendary NY hip hop radio) and Lord Sear.

Damn now I see they managed to create a good soundtrack with so few material. It's like the map, it feels a lot more bigger than it actually is.

I think it's great they managed to create a soundtrack that matches the era and atmosphere of the game incredibly well with only one of the stations being composed of somewhat popular music. I presume the last 3 on the list above probably did it as they were smaller labels back then and figured it'd be easy promotion, plus Moving Shadow had already worked with Rockstar previously on GTA2 and Midnight Club prior to GTA3.
