What's your favorite shotgun and why?

I've always rocked the pump-action. I love the classic stock cock of the pump action but we also have the semi-auto and repeating variants. Those who use these, why? I might be swayed to mix things up but am also just curious.

If you got good reflexes then semi-auto even counters dual sawn-offs, which I never really liked much.

Lately I‘ve started to get used to the double-barrel, which is actually pretty sick if you use it with PIB.

also with semi-auto and PIB you got almost revolver range or even more!

Double-Barreled all the way for me. It's probably the worst shotgun in the game, and it makes me want to gouge my eyes out sometimes, but then I wouldn't be able to see its badass looks with the longer barrel. Paired with PitB it can be be somewhat bearable and even rewarding.

Sawed-Off Shotgun.

I don't PvP unless forced to, as in someone attacks me in Free Roam, and I only like to have 1 rifle equipped, so in my Primary Holster is my trusty Sawed-Off shotgun for close encounters.

If I feel threatened I will pull out my Pump Action and just aim it at the person I think is going to try something. Usually when they hear that sweet sweet sound of a shotgun being loaded, they back off, but when they don't, the Sawed-Off comes out, and I have 2 of them.

I really like it in close range, because while you could aim... You don't have to.

Just when they are within the cone, hit the triggers and 4 shotgun blasts will usually remove several limbs(Mm record is head and both arms before he hit the ground).

The range might not be the best, neither the damage as it takes 2 hits to kill a higher level player, but that is why I have 2 of them 😃

[EDIT] I have already had to use it a couple of times today, both times against people who was jealous of me riding a donkey and tried to kill either me or the donkey, and ended up hurting me.

One guy ended up Parleying me, then attacking me again later and eventually leaving because my Dual Sawed-Off Shotguns were just ripping him apart.

I love these things! =D

Semi Auto Shotgun. The fastest firing shotgun with 5 rounds. You'll empty the whole clip in a second or two, when hipfiring. Faster than Repeating Shotgun. I cannot stand Sawed Off, the delay when shooting left and right. Semi Auto is excellent when paired with Slippery Bastard. I PvP'ed a lot with it. Trust me, I know what I'm talking about. I was one of the earliest players, adopting and dominating with Slippery Bastard, when most players used to have Slow and Steady back then.

I have tried every single shotgun but Semi-Auto came out to do best. There's a reason for its highest shotgun price tag.

If I had to rank them from best to worst, then:

Semi-Auto > Repeating > Pump Action > Double Barrelled > Rare > Sawed Off.

Fk the shtty range on Sawed Off.

At one point, I was maxing out the affinity stat of every single weapon in Showdown Series Large. Sawed Off was the worst. First I would use Slugs and aim for the head with Paint It Black 100% accuracy. Then I'd go back to normal Regular Pellet rounds but two rounds is sometimes not enough per reload. (There was a bug where spawn with only one Sidearm and not two). And the range on Sawed Off... sooo bad! I had to get so close. But of course I managed to max it out anyway. It's kinda fun maxing all weapons and getting the feel of them.

If someone tells you that Double Barrelled has most range than Semi Auto, Repeating or Pump Action, do not believe those lies. They have not tested themself. Another fact. Slugs have same range as normal regular pellets. The stats are wrong.

Hipfiring with Double Barrelled is really bad as well. It doesn't shoot both rounds fast enough like I thought. And I've been killed like this.

It's much better off having LeMet Revolvers for sidearms since they have their own Shotgun rounds.

Pump action. I'm classic like that. I carry it with slugs for PvP & incendiary buckshot for free roam players. I call mine "Dylon" because "it spits hot fire".

Im going with my dual sawed offs with the semi auto being a close 2nd. Dual sawed offs because I'm pretty decent at closing in undetected in the process of flanking operations. Once done teams lose focus on my teammates and on me.....in other words the dual sawed offs can create serious chaos if you can use them tactically.

The pump-action is more effective (for getting off more shots) and cheaper, but the double-barrel is the classic bad-ass shotgun, so I use it anyway (depending on the character). Very enjoyable to shoot; and though the reload takes forever I love the animation.

I'm still trying to figure this out. I use both the Pump Action and Double Barrel. - I prefer the styling of the DB, which is just badass, but it seems a bit slow at firing. I've died often cause the gun just refuses to fire. Don't have that issue with the others. - But then I also like the pump action, for its fast firing and higher ammo hold.

I thiiink I might go with Double Barrel. Just for the styling.

I bought the pump because it was cheap and I was impatient. I keep using it because it doesn't seem like the semi or repeating are significant enough upgrades to justify cluttering my precious inventory. Not that I'm complaining either, it does what a shotgun oughta do admirably. I'll probably get a semiauto when/if we ever get a weapon locker, unless an even better option comes along in the meantime.

It’s a hard toss-up between the Double Barrel and the lever action shotgun. The 1889 Remington was the last of the exposed-hammer double barrel shotguns, and the double barrel coachgun is truly an icon of the old west.

Conversely, I’m a massive fan of John Browning’s work, and his Winchester 1887 lever shotgun is one of his more outlandish designs. He was commissioned by Winchester to design a shotgun for them that looked and operated like their famous Winchester repeating rifles. It’s a bit of a shame the in-game version isn’t a Mare’s Leg model, but still it’s nice to see. It’s also one of only 2 guns in the game that’s actually new to the franchise.

I’d include the pump action/Winchester 1897 on that list if we could actually slamfire it like the real gun. Basically, you’d hold the trigger down and pump the action as fast as you can to fire as fast as you can work the action. Basically making it fire as fast as an automatic rifle.

Nice analysis. Love hearing gun talk like this, I think the weapons on this game are the best thing about it. Hope they don't bring out guns that make the others irrevelant, good balance how it is.

This one was my favorite in Red Dead Revolver

But now I only use a sawed-off as secondary weapon for specific situations, with explosive slugs.

Yup, Winchester 1897. The reason it was so effective at clearing trenches is because the design lacked a trigger action safety, which allowed you to keep the trigger down even whilst working the pump. Allowing you to fire the gun as fast as you could pump the action. It was called ‘slamfiring’, and it was so brutally effective the Germans tried to have shotguns classified as a warcrime. The same Germans that had no issue spreading poisonous gas in Entente trenches in the middle of the night, mind you. Which unlike shotguns, WAS a warcrime before the war even started. Ha.

The physics model of the RDR2 double barrel is not realistic. I shoot clay pigeons with an over & under shotgun in real life. It behaves completely different.

With the double barrel you have to use paint it black or you won't hit Jack.

It’s because of the way Rockstar calculates bullets. They still use hitscan, which is basically what Duckhunt used in 1985. Rather than rendering an actual bullet and the physics involved, [or in the case of shotgun, pellets] they just run an algorithm that detects where your reticle was the moment you pulled the trigger. If your reticle is on a target, it instantly counts as a hit and deals damage to the target relative to where you aimed. And relative to the range. To keep you from having effectively infinite range, there’s a hard cap on where the game stops calculating a ‘hit’. What this means is that at lets say 200 yards, your bullet instantly hits its target and deals damage. At 201 yards, the game says your target is ‘out of range’ and calculates no hit. Each gun has its own predetermined range. Rifle class guns are around 220-ish yards, shotguns are about 25 yards. You try to hit something a single inch beyond that, and it’s no damage. The end result is things like shotguns are completely useless at medium ranges because the spread instantly disappears. You can’t hunt with them, can’t use them as suppressive fire.

It really sucks they’ve stuck with hitscan, because modern consoles can easily handle bullet physics. Red Dead itself already can handle those calculations, because the bow & arrow uses it. And it’s the same code that handles thrown objects and dynamic destructive props.

The DB may not be the best performing shotgun, but I just love how it feels. If someone gets in close on you or if you're inside a small building then it's a powerhouse. I love how it blows people back at close range. That never gets old for me. It's honestly only effective in certain modes/maps though. I always pull it out when sneaking through cornfields.

Yeah. If you normally find yourself in a situation where you flank or close in a lot regardless of who you deal with (enemy player/npcs) then Dual Sawed-Off Shotguns will wreck people plenty...and if players or npcs overlap, you can get collateral kills. If we are talking about just 1 Sawed-Off  then I would agree with the masses that its crappy. Duals with slugs is the most effective and on top of that I'm not a fan of the Revolvers at all.....kinda slow for me and don't do enough dismemberment or damage for my taste.

The pump action is my favorite in the game currently, look and feel wise but honestly I like all 3 of the single barrel designs. The sawed off is my least used with the double barrel close behind.

My pump is now my close to medium choice over my single sawed off. Better range and 5 shots instead of 2.
My main uses are gang hideouts and ambushes where i switch between my pump and a rifle.

My pump worked great when i did the Blackwater Jailbreak mission. Knockdown power and lots of one shot kills.

Would it be more effective using the lever action or semi-automatic shotguns over my pump?

I think they're close enough in performance that outside of instances like using the semi auto with slippery bastard you can't really go wrong with any of them.

Just bought myself a sawed of shotgun. I kept needing a shotgun when I had my Bolt and Rolling block out, so I decided it'd take the place of my silver cattleman. Seems to be pretty ok so far. But I have decided the pump is my favorite, just because it's much quicker than my DB. but the appearance of the DB is so much cooler imo.
