Keyboard or Controller which do you use?

So I finally discovered that you can use a controller with GTAV online at least I think you can lol. I also recently discovered the Scuff controller randomly surfing the internet. I've always used a keyboard but lately been thinking about using a controller I have a few questions.

  • Which do you like better and why.
  • Is it easy to transition between a keyboard and a controller.
  • Which controller do you use, Also what is the cheapest way to start using a controller.

In most cases, controller does best in general gameplay.

Easier to maneuver land vehicles and aircraft whether casually or in racing.

Keyboard is typically my choice for combat with firearms, although using keyboard controls will put the player at a disadvantage in assisted-aim lobbies; partially because assisted-aim isn't functional with keyboard + mouse combo, so it's a controller only kinda thing. With so many keys to memorize it does take awhile to get used to the feel of standard keyboard controls.

driving/flying with a controller feels better, but jumping into gunfights against keyboard will get you wrecked. I think you can play with keyboard on console too and some players use that in deathmatches

I use a Tartarus V2 gaming keypad for all my games. In combo with a logitech G502 mouse...

That combo gets the job done… I Always thought a regular keyboard is too big and unpractical for my needs. MY Tart keeps everything close and accessible with and by one hand... And I fly by thumb-button, ehhe...Comfy too for the longer GTA-sessions.. 🙂

Downside and especially for GTA at the beginning, is I really have to take some time to think/tweak and keybind it. Once that's done (and by now I have my setup for most FPS ready) It all just flows for me...

The only game for which I use  an X-box controller is the Forza Horizon games I like to play… For that (arcade) racing game, the controller suits me and the game better..

But FPS and third person games on PC.... It's my Tart and G502 combo..

I like a controller more, because that's what I'm used to from playing on consoles for years.

It's very easy to transition between the two, I can just set the controller down and start using keyboard and mouse at any time.

I use a Dualshock 4, connected by Bluetooth. You can find them on sale for around $40 sometimes.

Im a keyboard player. Didn't own any console since PS1.
Once my flatmate let me to play GTAO on his PS4, when i grabbed a controller, i felt like i was having 3 IQ. Took me way too long to figure how to shoot a gun.

3 IQ was not meant to be an insult to anyone

I can't imagine flying a helicopter with a keyboard. Aiming is more precise I'm told, and I can imagine it is - but helicopter flying has got to be harder I'd think.

Having been playing GTA on PlayStation since the very beginning, when I got the PC version; nothing changed. Use a PS4 controller all day every day. 😛

keyboard and I Can manuever aim just fine because I'm a keyboard player from the beggining I Started my gaming life :D  but if I Have to be honest controller does more good to other players because they can  manuever aim etc more easily in controller because they have more control of it  but if you are a "veteran" keyboard player(yeah veteran :D) too you can do fine too.

Sorry to disturb some here, but flying specifically helis with keyboard is my thing. I'm lost using a controller here, only my keyboard gives me the accuracy for aiming/flying/landing. I use a controller for races (cars). When bike races appear, I'm better with my keys. Strange? YES!

What I'm saying, it's all about your "talent", taste and preference. I'd suggest a classic XB1 controller (USB-wired), so you won't have any problems running that on an older Win7 machine (against the wireless and dongle) and don't fall in the dead battery trap whilee in a race. For me, the best ever invented controller (personal preference ofc).

Like Amy said - just switch on the fly between keyboard and controller with just a press on a button.

I don't play GTA:O on PC as it'd probably explode it. But any other game I use the keyboard and mouse. I tried looking into adding a PS controller but got lost with how to install the programs needed.

I'm just a 'default guy' rare I change anything and usually just get used to the default setups. Learning computer stuff make me wanna punch the thing too often. 😁

Both. Being a long time GTA PC player and considering that V was my first console GTA experience, I'm switching back and forth. I prefer mouse and KB in firefights, but I won't even try to use them while controlling any sort of vehicles. Controller is much superior in the terms of vehicle controls for me and KB/ mouse is much better to use in free aim. While the game is playable with only the controller, there are situations where KB and mouse will suffer, ex: snacks and interaction menu. You just can't aim with mouse while the menu is open and can't eat snacks, when controller offers both possibilities.

Actually I find it's the opposite.

Flying is dead easy, taking the Cargobob for example, I've watched many videos of console players flailing about in the most ham handed manner, but using light key taps on a keyboard flying precisely is quite easy.

Granted, these meat fisted pilots probably don't spend a lot of time in a helo, and experienced players will have an easier time due to more practice and patience, but wild over corrections are easier to do with a small control stick, while the keyboard takes a little longer to go past the tipping point.

Conversely, it takes a lot more effort to recover from going too far out of balance on keyboard.

Aiming using a keyboard however, I find is nearly impossible in vehicles that auto return to center (in this game) like helos and the flying bikes. It's either all the way up or down, a very, very clumsy control scheme without a stick of some kind.

Again, it's largely a matter of practice with either control format.

On a related topic, I've been trying to play RDR1 on 360 using the wireless controller and found it extremely frustrating, particularly the rt stick looking around function is completely awkward, can't get that coordinated at all.

Now I've bought a converter that accepts USB keyboard and mouse plugs, you also plug a wired controller to the adapter box (the controller is only there to interpret the signal to the XBox) , and it has a jack for a wrist vibration thingy and a headphone/mic jack.

So far that's worked very well.

Before it felt like I was always quite drunk while playing and had little control over some aspects of the game, now it feels more natural.

I haven't used a controller since I played NHL 2001 almost 20 years ago, and never used a rt view stick. I feel too old to get used to it now, so the converter option made a huge difference, I was going to give up on it otherwise. 🙂

I tried to use controller once and I found that keyboard and mouse feel better for me. I can imagine that if you can get used to controller it can give you advantage in some occasions, but I think that in general mouse gives you more precise control over the aiming and  movement especially when flying.

Keyboard, mostly, controller sometimes for driving//flying...I've been using kb/mouse for so long that they feel more natural; the only problem with using the keyboard for driving is that your only option is to go full throttle all the time and you don't have the kind of brake/throttle control you need to properly drift.
