I've never played this series before. Might give it a go if it's set in London. The last game I remember being set in that city was the Getaway series on PS2, which I never played (yet).

The Getaway & Black Monday we’re both ahead of their time, recommend ya to whack the ole ps2 out just to experience both games. I do wonder what their take on a futuristic LDN will be like, feeling very sceptical about this one!

The Getaway series was fantastic. It really captured London. I'm still impressed by the map to this day, and how realistic the vehicles were. Plus, the story was 10/10. They are really games that deserve to get a remake treatment.

I really hope Watch Dogs is able to capture London as well. London can be such a good setting for open world games as it's pretty diverse. I'm just imagining how it'll look with a futuristic sort of vibe, and it could be amazing.

Honestly surprised nobody has tried to do a Zombies game around a desolate London yet, something like 28 Days Later. I think I remember playing some sort of game on PS4, but I don't think it was open world. Might have been a PS Plus game, but it sucked.

NakeyJakey's video on 28 Days Later styled video game is great.

I think it'll just be a tool you can use. Rather than hacking your way into buildings you'll hack/use people to do what you want or something like that.

I don't know, the fact that we have to recruit them before we can play as them and that they all have their own generated character traits makes me think it'll be a little more in-depth then that.

GTA NPC's have their own animations, voices and character traits, as does pretty much every other open world game. What it sounds like is happening here is that you can take control of them to assist you with stuff.

Their tweet officially confirming Legion reminds me of Odyssey's leak last year when the Sparta kick when everybody was like "wait wtf this sounds awful" and then Ubisoft officially confirmed the game with a tweet memeing about the Sparta kick and then the game came out and it wasn't as big a deal as everybody feared.

I really hope we can recruit Police Officers, and it actually changes the way the game is played. You don't get chased by police or wanted. Could be cool. Maybe they could implement some sort of Vigilante system like in GTA, where you can actually do cop-like missions.

It'd be really cool if you get special side mission type of events depending on the NPC's you recruit.

I really just need to see gameplay of how this works. Good chance it isn't as in depth as I'm thinking, but who knows.

Someone on the watch dogs reddit made a very good point, seeing as it's set in near cyberpunk, is it possible people have chips in their heads? Letting you control them?

Yea I think that's one of the most common theories going around right now. It's either that or you control followers of the protagonists cause, you'd think.

Yeah, that's the 'I kinda hope not' version for me - if they're going for a near-future post-Brexit dystopia, there's enough material to work with just from the premise alone without also adding in 'people have mandatory ctOS chips implanted into their brains'. You only need the one dystopia, Ubisoft - if you focus on one, the other's going to seem superfluous, and if you try to do both, they'll end up fighting for attention.

What I think would be better/smarter (and more in keeping with the general themes of the series so far) would be if the various folks 'activated' by the player are almost like sleeper agents - regular folks who suddenly get the call to go and do something a little less ordinary. Particularly because you couldn't have everybody being a secret DeadSec asset - instead, you'd have a mix of willing volunteers, largely oblivious folks operating under false pretenses (i.e., you're controlling them subtly by altering e-mails, fiddling with their schedules, etc.), people you've had to straight-up blackmail into doing stuff (or else...), that kind of thing.

Yeah, but the way it's worded here makes it sound way more substantial than your typical NPC system. They said it's generated based on gameplay systems. Sure, they could be massively overselling it but even Kotaku said it's really ambitious and I'd like to hope Ubisoft has learned their lessons about overselling from the first Watch Dogs.

The one thing I thought was that maybe it's far enough into the future that people have their phones implanted into their brains now and we can control them through a new and "improved" version of the Dedsec app from the last game that they've willingly downloaded.

As much as I don't like the idea of just remote controlling people's bodies, it's the only way this really makes sense to me.

Yea I just saw Jason Schreier's tweet on it an hour or two ago, we'll have to see I guess.

I reckon that's probably more likely (shades of the brain transmitter thing from that one episode of Doctor Who), but then ...might as well set it in New Providence, or Glass, or another entirely fictional high-tech open-world, then.

I still feel that 'Watch Dogs, but in near-future London this time' kinda writes itself - I rather liked how specific to San Francisco WD2 was, including how it handled/expanded on the whole ctOS concept, and there's nothing really 'London' about brain chips. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯  Feels like a waste of potential, IMO - given the choice between some new gimmick, and something that feels like an interesting, authentic exploration of a real location, I'm all for the latter, myself. Guess we'll see in a week or so...

Schreier of Kotaku said you go up to NPC's and recruit them, so I dunno if it's brain hacking.

Ah, see that sounds more like what I was hoping for - something that isn't just about ctOS, but also building on the DeadSec/underground hacker-vigilante stuff in a new and interesting way.

So, where Aiden Pearce was 'bargain bin Punisher (or probably more 2003 movie Daredevil... :p) with a magic phone', and DeadSec SF were a plucky bunch of 'hacktivists', this sounds almost like some kind of underground resistance movement, possibly - with the protagonist recruiting regular folk as allies. Might even be an evolution of DeadSec, come to think of it...

Maybe it's the other way around and you blackmail people to join you like the Dark Army in Mr. Robot.

Probably a bit of both - depends on how sympathetic different people will be to the cause, I guess.

Wonder if this'll also expand on/incorporate how all civilians in the previous games had little factoids you could glean about them via ctOS (their income, their hobbies/occupation, etc.) - it'd be cool if personalities/temperaments (and how willing/unwilling they might be to work with the protagonist) were handled in the same way, although I imagine that'd be a procedural thing, rather than RDR2 levels of individually-voiced/crafted NPCs (particularly considering the sheer volume of people in a modern city like London, compared to the largely sparse settlements of Red Dead).

Is it bad I'd only get this primarily to drive around in and am thus more interested in the cars they'll use than anything else?

Not at all. I had more fun just driving around in Watch Dogs 2 than doing the missions. Way I see it, if you can't have fun just messing around in an open world game, then you've failed in developing a good world to play in.

I hope they implement New Game Plus into this, a lot of Ubisoft's newer games like Far Cry 5, Assassin's Creed Origins and Odyssey have it and it makes replaying the game more fun the second time as you don't need to 'grind' to get better gear/perks/etc

I'd love to play through the story with ALL the hacks, get to play through the missions with every single option available without driving around and scoping out for perk points.... seriously WD 1 handled perk points better than 2 did

Right? It's gonna be especially weird if we really do just recruit them into our cause and don't "hack into them". Like, in the near future EVERYONE in London is good at hacking and parkour? Even if we do hack into them it's still a little silly that they'd suddenly all have equal strength, agility, stamina, etc.

Man, the more I think about this game the more curious I get about it. I'm not sure I've ever been more on the fence about a game before. Whatever they do at E3 could either make this a day one purchase or a wait till it's damn near free purchase.

That's what I've been talking about. The whole "controlling every NPC " thing sounds like a thing that sounds good on paper, but horribly executed.

It sounds a bit sketchy right now, but as I said, I'll just have to wait and see. Can't judge a book by its cover.

Tbh it doesn't even sound good on paper to me. I don't find it interesting.

I mean, it’ll probably be similar to how MGSV did it. You could recruit any soldier, and you could play as them during side  missions/free roam

It’ll probably have better moral implications than MGSV did though in regards to why people join you.

I mean if that's the case it'll be funny at first but then get old very fast. Kinda reminds me a bit of AC Odyssey and the NPCs trying to fight you. Eventually seeing the old lady with the broom try to kill you gets old very fast.

I'm curious if you'll be able to explore the London Underground in this game. Have they said anything about that? Would be a cool way to traverse around the map. Imagine a mission where you need to chase somebody through it all.

Uncharted 3 had a mission like this and I thought it was dope.
