Best games with driving missions and car chases?

Recommended Posts

MysteryDriverX

I'm a bit tired of all the shooting and killing in GTA IV and San Andreas but I really like the car chases. Especially in IV where the cops are a bigger threat, but also loved San Andreas for the 90's setting (reminded me of those old TV shows with real police chase videos).
I've already played Driver 1, 2 and part of 3 (man that game sucked). I played a bit of Parallel Lines once and it looked like it's just a bad GTA clone. Also played the Need for Speeds from 1 to Undercover too much. And I've played that Scariest Police Chases game on PS1.

What are some other good games with car chases and driving missions? Maybe there's some obscure old one or new one I've never heard about. Preferably not GTA clones, though I don't mind if there's some shooting or getting out of the car involved I guess.

Thanks!

Have you played Driver: San Francisco? From what I remember it went back to the roots of the first couple of Driver games and was pretty good.

Driver: Parallel Lines is great. It's not just a bad "GTA clone." In fact the Rockstar borrowed a few ideas from them for IV.

Really fun car chasing and driving in this NFS game.

Mad Max has car combat.

Batman Arkham Knight lets you ride around in the Batmobile.

Already mentioned but Driver: San Francisco surprised me on how fun it is (was it removed from Steam?). The classic movie chase recreations are also amazing.

And if you want to continue with the police protagonist theme, I also enjoyed Crash Time III a lot. It focuses more on you being the police and trying to catch criminals (and eventually crashing and destroying 5 AI cars), but there are races and parts where you're being chased. You can't get out of the car, but you can shoot from it in some missions (it's less exciting than it sounds actually).

Can't buy it anywhere afaik (digitally), unless keys/codes for it exist.

Thanks for the replies!!!
I only played very little of Driver Parallel Lines and it was mostly on foot segments. I didn't like those too much but I guess I could give it a chance, the driving must be good.

I never tried Driver San Francisco because I didn't like the whole gimmick of taking control of people's bodies 😛 but I should check it out.

And I forgot about Hot Pursuit 2010, I hope I can play it now with my current graphics card.

Also forgot about Crash Time, that one seemed really cool and I also never played it yet. I hope it has mods 😁 I think I remember one of those Crash Time games had a few mods.

Driver from 1999

Driver Parallel Lines

Driver San Francisco

That franchise always knew how to pull of car chases.

Medal of Honor 2010 had a stealth section in a car and a car chase through heavy traffic, those were good.

Driver San Francisco is one of the most brilliant driving games to ever come out.The switching body mechanics is a silly concept but its such a genius story/gameplay idea.It works pretty well and the story is just as good with some of the weirdest twists in gameplay because of the body switch mechanic.

Its great and a great final chapter to the franchise. Its also a 60fps open world game on the xbox 360 dont know how they pulled that off.

Faster Baby DLC had great car chases in it. This chase in particular had me on edge! Loved it!

Came here to say Mafia III and I'm pleasantly surprised to see it's been posted above... best driving mechanics since the Driver series and everything about the vehicles (engine effects, burnouts) seems designed to make you enjoy them to the full.

Faster Baby! has loads of great chases and is clearly inspired by the Dukes of Hazzard. The only thing that ruins it for me is that the police in the game are very, very triggerhappy when it comes to pursuits and you'll spend most of your time having your car blown to pieces rather than enjoying a chase.

What you can do, though, is use some of the missions in the base game to set up excellent chases. There are always one or two informants you need to interrogate for each area of the city. The trick is to kill the two or three goons guarding them and let them flee in their car. Depending on the stage you're at in the game, this could be a sedan, a muscle car or a sports car. Choose your own vehicle accordingly (I always liked the Potomac Gallant or Potomac Ascent) and barrel after them. It's like being in Bullitt.

This really is the best suggestion. I came back to 100% this game and it's crazy how many missions there is that involve chases and shoot outs. Some really fun stuff. I don't think you'll find anything better.

Chase HQ (not sure it answers the question though)

Faster baby has the best missions ever made into a video game. the mission where you have to drive over KKK scum will make you pi.. in your pants

A dedicated 'drift around corners' button, slo-mo that activates when you shoot at other cars (which makes driving and shooting not only much more 'action movie' to look at, but also easier to control!), cars that flip (and often explode!) when you pop the tyres in slo-mo, the ability to jump on to other cars and hang off the roof - I can't think of another game that incorporates as many cinematic car chase staples into the game. And not just that, but makes them seamless parts of regular gameplay - not just one-off scripted set pieces with a bunch of quick-time events.

...and that's on top of having a clever Arkham-style combat system (reworked to be less about flow and choreography, and more reacting and situational awareness), and one of the most unique cover-shooting mechanics ever (which does a great job of turning John Woo-style shootouts into a functional game mechanic). Sleeping Dogs is such an underrated gem...

Definitely agree about Mafia III, too - particularly because (like with Sleeping Dogs) none of the mechanics are locked to one-off sequences. If you can do something (like kidnapping someone and driving like a maniac to scare them into talking) once, you can do it at pretty much any time the opportunity presents itself.

Plus, Mafia III's DLC added some great cars, car customisation (on a par with recent GTAO cars, even), races, and a racing outfit not a million miles from Ryan Reynolds' look in the movie Drive. If you like great movie car chases, then you'll appreciate being able to drive a knockoff of the Bullitt Mustang, dressed like this, all while listening to Martha Reeves' Nowhere to Run on the radio. ;)

Not important, but I assume you mean Ryan Gosling`s character in "Drive".

I can for what it is worth recommend Mafia II, I think it has great driving physics and the graphics is still good in my opinion even though the game is from 2010 from what I remember.

In my defense, I come from a parallel universe where the Deadpool movies suck, but First Man is an absolute riot. :p

(also, it's Canada's fault, for being the world's #1 exporter of Sexy Ryans...)

As for Mafia II, that game is still the gold standard for well-designed off-brand cars in videogames - only things like the recent Gauntlet Classic come close, IMO. There's not quite as much to do in cars as Mafia III, but the driving is really satisfying - particularly if you use the more realistic "simulation" setting. :)
