Journey_95
For me it's still GTA IV. Niko's story was the most compelling one for me, I loved the darker tone and human characters. RDR2 comes close but I don't think it was as consistent iiCriminnaaL, Asisvénia, Alexander Pierce and 2 others
El Penguin Bobo
you already know everyone's gonna say IV, no need for a thread, lul. I still think IV had the best story, but I might change my opinion on that if I ever get a chance to play RDR 2, who knows? Wouldn't be so sure, RDR and especially RDR2's stories are even more popular from what I have seen. GTA IV despite the appreciation it gets now was still a bit divisive since many fans felt that it was too dark compared to previous GTA games iiCriminnaaL and El Penguin Bobo
TheSantader25
For me the best R* story is GTA San Andreas(based on the release date). It's not typically dark or satirized like IV and V but it has the perfect balance for the GTA franchise. RDR2 and IV are close seconds and RDR2 could have beaten SA if chapter V+Epilogue and Sadie were handled better. IV also could have beaten SA if the post Algonquin and especially Alderney chapter had more relevance to the story instead of filling up spaces and also if Bulgarin was handled better. San Andreas also loses points because of Ryder's ending and some inconsistencies in CJ(Especially in the mission deconstruction). This is how I rated the top R* games in terms of story. These ratings have been given after analysis based on characters, dialogue and narrative. 1. San Andreas 28/30 2. IV(+EFLC) 27/30 2. RDR2 27/30 4. RDR 26/30 5. LA Noire 25/30 6. Max Payne 3 24/30 6. V 24/30 8. Vice City 21/30 Edited June 2, 2019 by TheSantader25 ballstorture

MVP
Grand Theft Auto IV and Red Dead Redemption 2. Both really get the player into an emotional background with excellent narrative and well developed characters. Algonquin Assassin
GTA IV and RDR2. GTA IV probably doesn't need much explaining, but it feels like it hasn't aged a day. Niko's journey is still amazing as it was on April 29 2008. No it's not perfect, but there's a good reason why it's consistently praised as the best story in the GTA series. Even people who aren't necessarily GTA IV fans can't help, but see what a masterpiece the story is. That simply doesn't happen with other GTA games. RDR2 wins as far as R* games in general. Again it's not perfect (Sadie's character development is weird), but I loved the broad range of emotions I went through and Arthur solidified himself as one of my favourite protagonists eclipsing John. Auditore
GTA San Andreas might be the funniest gta game and probably the less "mean" of the franchise, its just a fun story about family. The characters are all great and Tempenny is so frickin good. "We can sh*t on you from such a height you will think god himself has crapped on you" "Does the pope sh*t in the woods?" GTA 4 had a very interesting premise,a imigrant story, the world also reflected that(bridges blocked because of terrorist attack fear is a nice touch)one of the main reasons liberty city in gta 4 is my favorite gta map.The theme of american greed was underdeveloped, the game could have explored more of that. "You killed my friends for a thousand dollars?" "Come on lets get out of here cousin,we won" RDR still holds up and while the story doesnt hit like a train till the third act,the game atmosphere and premise are all great it immediatly stands out among other western games and other rockstar games."The Father becomes the son" right before your eyes and through gameplay, its just a nice little thing i love.It also has one of the most badass ending in all videogame history. "Society may be dull but the alternative is hell" "As long as there's guns and money there wont be any freedom" RDR2 is a f*ckin odyssey and im still surprised the story doesnt fall apart after 60 hours, its has the best writing rockstar has ever done and the most in depth character work.Fun to compare it to GTA 3 and see how far they've come from those days,Arthur Morgan is my favorite videogame character of all time and Dutch one of my favorite villains. The epilogue drags a bit but it has so many great moments. "I gave you all i had Dutch" "You gotta love yourself a fire" The Holy Diver, ballstorture and icecoldkilla1467

Guest Billy Russo
Vice City for me. I'm a bit of Tommy Vercetti fanboy. Plus, I just liked the whole Scarface type of vibe, and taking over. Just my kind of sh*t.
Mas u Sees
Please don't kill me for this one, but in my opinion it was GTA V. As in, if you are talking about the overall "feel" of the story. I felt like GTA Vs atmosphere as a satirical soap opera just had the perfect fit, with some well directed action packed mission design combined with the three character dynamic and all the "themes" I'd expect in a GTA game: Espionage, Gang Life, Car jacking, Drug trafficking, the ridiculous and the strange, Hollywood, the super rich, Bank robberies. I have yet to complete RDRII though(still 3rd chapter) so, I'll see if that one is better.
