One of my favourite openings of any game. Shame the game wasn't as good as Previous instalments.

I know it's kind of obvious being on a GTA forum but I'm always impressed by Rockstar's blurring the lines between cinema and gaming. I suppose I'm talking about techniques they employ. Like the raindrops falling on the screen in Vice City, to using black bars, to the anamorphic lens flare effects in GTA V, to RDR2's cinematic camera view, which is just an absolute treat for visual artists/photographers like myself. But not just that, it's the actual "cinematography" in Rockstar games that amazes. Panning shots, use of what would be crane shots etc. It's like they think the scenes through from a movie-production aspect - not crossing the lines etc, use of blocking and all that jazz.

As for specific scenes, can't really think of too many now but look at this screen from San Andreas. The shot from the front of the car. We two of our betrayers with us. Big Smoke, displays his greed by making an excessive order. Now we can attribute this just because he's a fat bastard or we can perceive it as a metaphor and pretty literally as well as his actual greed. Ryder, his right-hand man in this betrayal, sits in the passenger seat and Big Smoke behind CJ with Sweet farthest away and almost unseen.

It's a perfect shot. Our protagonist is closest and like a cornered chess piece, we have greed behind us and betrayal at the side. Sweet is almost cut off, which actually happens as the story unfolds.

Reminds of other films about betrayal and crime. Not just thematically when it comes to friends betraying you but visually too - from a cinematic viewpoint.

Actually.

The first game I ever played that I thought was cinematic was GTA III. I actually made the link between it feeling like a movie but I'm paying a game. So, I have to give a shout to GTA III's opening scene...

When Ezio turns and sees Altair I still get chills. I adore those characters. Those original games are some of my favorites of all time.

@Mister Pinkerton

I never would have noticed that symbolism in that shot from San Andreas, that's a cool analysis you did. Just goes to show the level of detail put into some games.

Thanks. It came to be as I was going to make another point. Watching too much Sopranos and have symbolism in my head. May or may not be deliberate though but I like to think it is.

Didn't really like the story in this game but the scenes with Leonidas were awesome.

Many of the RDR 2 cutscenes. I can't even look at the game anymore because I'd want to play it again and I'm not ready yet.

I also like the opening of FM2. Cool music and CGI.

Speaking of Driver. Driver: Parallel Lines was very cinematic.

...good grief, this came out 10 years ago...

Still looks really good now, but back then, it was incredible to have Blur's pre-rendered cinematics for the in-game cutscenes, not just a trailer or title sequence.

Quite liked the ones in Halo 4, too - particularly the ones setting up each of the weekly Spartan Ops episodic missions:

Personally thought the story of Spartan Ops was a bit 'eh' (same with Halo 4 itself, come to think of it), but that first one has some great moments, like the Rogue One-esque bit where the UNSC Infinity drops out of slipspace, or the colossal Infinity launching an entire armada of capital ships with the same ease as a regular capital ship would launch fighters...! :O

Not really cinematic in a conventional sense, but Playdead Games (Limbo, Inside) often have a knack for creating extremely atmospheric, desolate experiences. This is unsurprising considering that they are backed by the Danish Film Institute.

Their games tend to display a strong Nordic Noir influence (which I am a fan of) with its wide angle style of presentation, sparse dialogue and intricate sound/music design.

The fluid, cinematic approach that their games take blurs the line between games and film, and it's something very few developers in the market can acheive.

Pretty much the whole of this game (Beyond: Two Souls), but I remember this chase scene being particularly good.  Funny how Youtubing a video can take so much away from it!

And you were in full control of the motorbike for the whole thing, regardless of camera changes.  It was tense.

@YouSitTightBuddy you should try deadlight.no as much atmospheric, but with similarities
