How to Master Hand to Hand Combat (NEED HELP)

Hey all.

IMO, hand to hand combat in RDR2 is amazing. Especially fighting other players. Different NPCs have different fighting tactics and some are better than others (players too, obviously). The fighting is similar, and in my opinion better, than GTA 4 and by a large, large margin GTA 5. You can brawl back and forth with others for a decent amount of time. You can punch, block, headbutt, choke, tackle, push, counter, sweep legs, grapple, finish opponents using props around you, kick, ram, throw, and probably more I can't remember at the moment. IT IS MARVELOUS!! The knockouts are satisfying. The fights feel so real and intense to me. This is a widely overlooked gem of this game. WIDELY. It's amazing. Lol.

Anyways, it's a bit mysterious too. My brother has ran up on me and pushed me (and others ), not tackled btw, and sent me flying! It was crazy. He has also lowered his shoulder and rammed me and sent me flying before too. We can't figure out for the life of us how to do this. I want to know how to do it so badly. I've looked through reddit and google and here and other websites and I can't find any guide on which buttons to press to do these certain things. Hopefully there are specific controls and times (which there definitely are certain times) to do these certain things and they aren't just random acts the game generates while pressing circle or b.

Anyways, again lol, my point is, we need to figure this out. I propose we make this thread a guide to compile all the controls/times to perform all of these different maneuvers! I'll edit this post and add all of the correct controls/times to do these things as we chime in/figure out how to do them!

*For a while, this will obviously be a work in progress and different things will need to be tested and confirmed before this list could be considered "perfect" or complete. And again, hopefully there are specific controls for every maneuver, it's not RNG, and it is as set in stone as possible.*

*I WILL DEFINITELY NEED YOUR HELP AND PATIENCE WITH THIS. IF YOU THINK THIS GUIDE AND HOW IT IS EXPRESSED OR WORDED/ RELAYED COULD BE DONE A BETTER WAY, TELL ME. I'M NOT TOO PROUD. I WANT THIS DONE RIGHT.*

*IF THIS TOPIC WOULD DO BETTER IN THE RDR2 "STORY" FORUM, I'LL PUT IT THERE INSTEAD OF HERE. ALTHOUGH I AM MAINLY CONCERNED ABOUT THE FIGHTING IN THE ONLINE AND I USE THIS FORUM MORE, I DON'T REALLY CARE WHERE IT GOES. I WANT IT TO BE WHEREVER IT WILL GROW THE BEST.*

*HOPEFULLY THE COMBAT IN THE STORY IS NOT MORE INTRICATE THAN IN THE ONLINE - IE YOU HAVE MORE CONTROL OVER HOW YOU FIGHT. LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU GUYS THINK ABOUT THAT.*

*It is getting late here, so I do not have time to get a big start on the list below, but if we could start posting every small and large maneuver control that we know of, being careful as we can not to post controls others already have (as to make sorting through everything easier), I will get back early tomorrow and start the guide on this post.*

Punch - Circle or B

(Pressing Punch exactly when someone punches you - you block and counter attack)

Block - Square or X

(Pressing Block exactly when someone punches you - you block and stun the enemy)

Grab by the throat - Y or Triangle

Tackle - Run forward and Circle or B

Throw - (After grabbed by the throat) Press and hold down left stick and push in direction of desired throw

Throw to the ground for mount - (After grabbed by the throat)  Press down the left stick

Excellent idea. I'm very interested in how this turns out.

The only other moves I know is pretty well known:

Pressing Block exactly when someone punches you - you block and stun the enemy.

Pressing Punch exactly when someone punches you - you block and counter attack

I agree, hand to hand in this game is a blast. I learned that if you fight someone the law really doesn't care. So I started fighting instead of shooting NPCs if I was in town (story mode). I have pulled off some wicked moves that I had no idea were in game.

Great thread - hope it gets some traction.

I knew someone would definitely comment this when I said 'Fight Club' lol

Lol sry. It was pretty lame.. but mandatory.

I'm on ps4, don't use mic, but i'm up for some fight club.

Not mindless punching, but to try and perfect the martial arts

Thanks for the support yall! I'm definitely down for a fight club! I'm DirtyDeeds765 on PS4. Feel free to send a message or friend request. We can make a community or a group message for a fight club. Fighting in groups is amazing. I've done 7 man free for alls in rhodes saloon and you wouldn't believe how fun it is! I'm pretty good at fighting too lol. Nice vid @gtafan1995!  That's the ram I was talking about. If we can figure out how to do that, and the whole community catches on (not that it wouldn't suck to be done to us) that would make the combat in this game even more EPIC!

One more thing, do you guys think this thread would do better in the RDR2 "story" forum? Because it gets ALOT more traffic? Or are they too concerned with Marston's hair? (KIDDING ;)) I'm just really not sure because as I said, my interest is mainly in the online fighting - and that really isn't for the online. This thread kind of sits on the line of both forums.. Maybe we need to figure out if there are controls and maneuvers exclusive to the story? What do you guys think?

A melee character needs stamina. Develop that by running or swimming a lot. You'll melee better as a level 10 stamina character.

Use the ability card Peak Conditioning for extra stamina.

Also, it helps/hurts to be a brawny or heavy character, for you gain health but lose a little stamina (if I remember right).

That goes for all body types, but only brawny and heavy shows a difference in size

No but if you're underweight you get more stam. If you're overweight more health

Stamina seems bugged to me. I had a friend tackle me while I was underweight and my entire stamina bar went from full to empty. This resulted in me being choked to death. Very annoying.

I had something like that happen last night, me and buddy full stamina, I tackle and do the choke hold thing but quickly press square to dismiss (we were just testing the tackle) and when my buddy punched me before getting up (as the animation goes) it completely depleted my stamina bar. I was kinda shocked lol, we couldn't get it to reproduce either. Also at the time my buddy could only do the knock down to me he couldn't tackle, after exiting and reloading the game it went back to normal.

Was weird.
