jelly
I just checked my performance and now the GPU client is doing 430 point WUs that are 1500 ppd slower than the typical 480 point WUs. LAME. http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=52&t=5452 (http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=52&t=5452)
Exkabewbikadid
So basically these new projects push the GPU even harder, produce a thrid less ppd and their justification is that NV cards are too far ahead of ATI in terms of ppd. That doesn't exactly bode much confidence that they know how to benchmark properly. Sure it's the science that counts and not the credit being adhered, but it's still lame that they'd curb NV down after the fact. All that did was inflate the stats and make them less meaningful. CharmingCharlie
Hell I am gonna bump this, we need more recruits, poor ole GTA forums keeps hovering around the 540 mark in the rankings. Where are all the PC guys with their shiny new GPU's in preparation for GTA 4. I mean we have a total of 226 registered users and only NINE are folding, you heard me NINE. I hope someone see's this and tries out their new gpu with the folding client, it really is simple and it doesn't stop you playing games, even on my crappy 8800gts (old version) I can still play everything whilst the client folds......... well everything except Crysis. Datalord
I know, it's really bad last time I looked we were at 7 active in the last week. Picolini
Constant usage of an electric device = higher temperatures. Higher temperatures = wear and tear. My main reason. As much as I'd like to cure cancer or what ever, I couldn't afford to damage my PC. I already push it heard enough as is. Besides, most of the down time is taken up processing/converting/playing video files. So really, there is not much down time and when there is it needs it to cool off. Datalord
Thing is, most people won't have to worry about high temperatures, stock cooling works perfectly fine for folding. My PC has been folding for over 3 years at an average of I'd say 6 hours a day, excluding when im encoding a DVD or gaming back in the days before I got a 360. A CPU isn't mechanical it can take it. My only other theory is people concerned about energy bills. Help medical research with your PC and PS3 | Support GTAF [email protected] |
jelly
I'm not going to leave my PC on for 8 weeks while I'm gone so it's not folding. I'll try it when I get back, maybe there's been some updates to make the client more reliable and such, maybe the new drivers actually work properly too! CharmingCharlie
meh I am just looking for an excuse to buy a new graphic card so I can replace this aging 8800gts so I am running it into the ground, but the damn thing keeps working Perversely my PC upstairs which is hardly ever on just had the hard disc die on it, not a happy bunny I can tell ya. Still we are moving up the tables slowly but surely, it seems to be 2 steps forward 1 step back though sometimes. I will keep folding till something comes out worth playing on my PC, I am still waiting Edited October 12, 2008 by CharmingCharlie

CharmingCharlie
I am afraid I have to stop folding again, these drivers I am using (178.13) are just not stable. Everything works fine the PC folds, it plays games and does everything fine. However the minute I start a dvd up or a avi file up then BANG driver crash, blue screen and then PC resets. It doesn't matter if the card is clocked or overclocked, I will do a jallar and give it a miss till they sort the drivers out. Sorry guys but I have to put my usage of the PC over finding a cure for cancer .
Ronnyboy
Been trying to run on my PS3, but it won't work units unless I am connected to the internet. Since I don't have a router, I have to unplug my computer from the modem to plug in the PS3. So, looks like I may be out sometime until I can get a cheap router. CharmingCharlie
Well I am back to folding again Trying the 178.24 drivers now. Hopefully it will stop crashing when I play dvd's/avi's. I think when I next upgrade my gpu I am going ATI. In my books Nvidia are really screwing around too much with these drivers.
kingvercetti
I've fired up [email protected] again, the only problem is I'm using a 4870 and ATI cards are really slow compared to NV at getting work units done, but I'll do my best. Not like I'm doing much gaming anyway, despite building this machine mostly for gaming.
CharmingCharlie
I hear where you are coming from kingvercetti, the one thing holding me off upgrading my 8800gts is the fact there is barely anything I want to play. I am hoping that GTA 4 will encourage me to upgrade my card (doubtful) and then I can shove the 8800gts in my Duo2Core and fold with no problem since I hardly ever use the Duo2Core. Just out of curiosity when you say the 4870 and ATI cards are slow how long do they take to do an average unit. My 8800gts can chew through pretty much any unit in just over 3 hours, so I am just curious how well ATI do.
kingvercetti
My 8800GT used to get through a unit in roughly two hours, my 4870 takes three and used to get half the points - problem is I can't remember my 88GT's PPD. All's I know now is I'm getting about 3300 PPD in three hours on the 4870.
PetsOvernight
Hey guys, what's up? We've dropped now from 10,000+ PPD, to a measly 2,000 and dropping. All the big players seem to have stopped totally... We're starting to get raped in the ranks, haha... So what's the deal?

For some reason, ATI cards only have half their shaders used, which is why they are behind, if I was them I'd have fixed that issue rather than buggered the nVidia cards. kingvercetti
I'm folding a lot more than I used to, pretty much every time my PC is on the [email protected] GPU client is too, so I'm getting through 3 or 4 WUs per day, hopefully soon there'll be some sort of update which actually uses ATI cards properly. Maybe to speed it up a bit they should sponsor some folks to make folding power houses, I know I wouldn't mind building a 2x4870X2 system so long as it's always folding. Democrab
Since I'm nice, when my 9600GT (4k PPD) gets here, I'll fold on that. I already fold 24/7 for a different team so it will be on all the time.
Datalord
I was wondering why we had dropped off too I'm currently chewing my way through a 900 pointer, I was wondering why it has taken 3 weeks. Democrab
I'll put my CPU on GTAF for a while, need a change of team, will be nice to have a reasonably high PPD in a team, rather than OCN where most people have GPU2 or a Farm going as well. Oh yes, when I get the HTPC on the internet, I will make it fold for GTAF too.
jelly
The Iron is back on, I'm back home and thanks to winter it doubles as a space heater as well so it's entirely utilitarian. CharmingCharlie
I've had to stop again, finally found something worth playing ie fallout 3 . I did try to run folding with fallout 3 but the thing kept crashing every five seconds. So when push comes to shove I did build the machine to play games. I may hop on board after Christmas, I plan to upgrade my 8800gts to something better and will stick the 8800gts in my duo2core and will probably run it 24/7. But for now if it is a choice between walking around a nuclear wasteland fighting scorpions or folding @ Home then it's nuclear wasteland everytime. Democrab
I change teams to GTAF and then their server stops taking WUs... Oh well, I should have a 9600GT soon enough to fold on as well, and play games, lol.
PetsOvernight
Nice to see the pointage will be back on the rise soon! Was pretty sad to see such a drastic drop and so many people stop. Gotta get back up the ranks, yo.

Exkabewbikadid
Back at it again. My modem died and it took my drawling piece of sh*t ISP almost two weeks to ship a new one. Unfortunately the SMP client quit working again too. I'll try to sort that out later.
jelly
That is it, that is f*cking it. They've had their chances, I'm through. f*cking piece of sh*t decides to bluescreen me while I'm playing in the Far Cry 2 Map Editor - an unsaved map, will take hours to redo and obviously won't be the same. I'm over the edge. f*cking piece of sh*t useless drivers, the worst drivers, bar none, in the hardware world, come from the two retarded stepcousins AMD and NVIDIA. Graphics drivers cause more than 70% of Vista's crashes. f*cks sake. I cannot wait, I absolutely cannot wait, until Intel brings out their card. I will never ever buy NVIDIA again. I might glance at AMD again if Intel's entrance could cause them to actually employ actual software developers to work on their drivers, or maybe even, god forbid, release something open source. Until then they can f*ck off and suck my hairy asshole. Useless pricks. Not buying a single piece of graphics hardware until Larrabee is here.
