Edwards
Yea but I don't get where you add -advmethods...F@H starts up when I start my computer up and shuts off when I shut my comp. off... Wherever it starts it from. If it's started by a shortcut in the Startup folder of the start menu, go into the properties of the shortcut and add -advmethods to the end of the path. Wherever it starts it from. If it's started by a shortcut in the Startup folder of the start menu, go into the properties of the shortcut and add -advmethods to the end of the path. I went back a few pages and found the instructions I posted a few weeks ago: 1 - Go to your startup folder, for example: C:\Documents and Settings\owner\Start Menu\Programs\Startup 2 - Right click on the folding@home shortcut and select Properties 3 - Under the Shortcut tab, find the target line and add -advmethods to the end. it should then look like this: "C:\Program Files\Folding@Home\winFAH.exe" -advmethods 4 - Reboot your computer so the program will be executed with the new tagline. 5 - Also, if you start the program from a desktop shortcut for example, make sure it also has the -advmethods tag in the target line. D@3mOniT3
If you close the F@H program when it is in the middle of working on a work unit, what happens? When you restart F@H does the unit continue where it left off or is it aborted completely?

ViperGTS-R
phew... i had a brief lapse in folding i thought one of my HDDs failed yesterday morning.. i pressed the power button and it wouldnt start so i pulled out devices from the power suppluy one by one and eventually traced it to the Neon light in my case which means i need a new power supply before i can continue modding it oh well ill have a job in a few weeks which means i can buy stuff like that. Edwards
Gah. I got a 50point Gromacs WU, it's taking forever. My P4-1.8A @ 2.7 rips through 70point Tinkers, why the hell is this one taking so damn long? I thought Gromacs was better for Intel chips??? Alright, I found another host. Glad -advmethods is helping out I think I'll write up a guide telling people how to use the -advmethods and the console version with hideITX and post it as a new topic so more people will see it. I think people are having issues with the graphical client and that's why they aren't running the program anymore. Anyways, here's why Hyper-threading kicks ass:
D@3mOniT3
Is there any way to check CPU temperature without going into setup when the computer is booting up? I'd like to check it periodically but it's a f*cking pain in the ass to restart my comps over and over. I just checked it and it was at like 59 celcius (139 fareinheight) which seems pretty high. Also, xcommunicated, how did u get that electron microscope deal? And what is it? Any advantages to the normal F@H layout?
Jevon
http://www.hmonitor.com/ is one program, but it only works for 30 days. 59C does seem pretty high, but then mine is running at about 54 at the moment. I'm looking at getting a better processor heatsink at the moment though.

I'm looking at getting a better processor heatsink at the moment though. Motherboard Monitor 5 is the one I use, and it's freeware so it won't expire. And yeah, 59C is kinda high, but not in the danger zone yet. Still, you might want to back off your CPU usage from 100 percent down to 70-80 percent and see if that helps. My old pc runs around 53C and the one I just built... I can't say for sure because ABIT's canterwood mobos have been proven to read 10-15C higher than they actually are. It says 60C now, but I'm guessing it's more like 45-50C. Electron Microscope III is a program that gives you more information about the protien simulation your computer is doing. Frame: This bar tells you what percentage of the current frame is done Frames: This bar tells you how many frames are done in the folding simulation. Time Per Frame: Gives the time it takes for each frame. Each frame time may vary. Time Per WU: This gives an estimated time of completion for the current work unit based on how fast the current frame goes. Start/Finish: What time the WU started and will likely finish How to install EMIII 1) Download EMIII v2.4.0 here 2) Unzip EM III and copy the unzipped folder to C:\Program Files\Folding@Home\ (or where ever you have Folding@home installed) Also make sure everything was unzipped properly - you should see a "skins" folder in the EMIII folder. 3) Open the EMIII folder and copy these 2 files into the folding@home folder: 1 - speed.exe and 2 - EMGetCPUinf.dll 4) Double click speed.exe. A new file, speed.emd, will be created. This tells you the make and speed of your processor in the program, but it's not always accurate. 5) To configure EM III, double-click EMIII.exe in the EMIII folder. You should see a configure panel. 6) Under general info in the configure panel, find "box path" and click the computer icon next to it and browse for the following: C:\Program Files\Folding@Home\winFAH.exe (orFAH3Console if you're using the console client). It might say it's the wrong one but just ignore it and click ok. That pic I posted shows two folding@home clients. You can only run 2 clients if you have dual processors or a Hyper-threading processor.
D@3mOniT3
Still, you might want to back off your CPU usage from 100 percent down to 70-80 percent and see if that helps. Unless I'm blind there is no way to see exactly the percent of CPU usage, so I lowered mine down about 1/3 of the way from 100% and the temp only went down a couple of degrees. Do you have to wait a long time for it to go down? I waited about an hour and it went down only to like 56 degrees. I put it back up to 100% usage because it was going extremely slow and the temperature didn't drop that much. But would running my CPU at 59 celcius damage my computer in any way? Or is it just if it goes above a certain temp. I'll lower the usage overnight and check the temp in the morning, maybe I just had to wait longer for it to drop. I run mine at 98%, which brings the temp down by 3-5°C. 59 is way too high for a non-overclocked CPU. Unless you're OCing, get some cooling on that thing! 59 won't damage it, but it's really pushing it.
D@3mOniT3
What type of processor is it? And what kind of system? Have you custom-built it? It's an AMD Athalon 1.4.. my brother built it for me cause I am not all that computer savvy. I have windows XP proffesional, 512 megabytes of RAM, 40 gig hard drive, geforce 3, and that's all I can think of. I run mine at 98%, which brings the temp down by 3-5°C. 59 is way too high for a non-overclocked CPU. Unless you're OCing, get some cooling on that thing! 59 won't damage it, but it's really pushing it. I'm definitly not overclocking it because I don't know how. It's at 55 celcius right now, but it seems to be rising, grr. I put it to about 80% usage overnight and it dropped to 52 degrees, but I'm thinking that's because I had my air conditioner on overnight. Oh well, I'll just find the percentage that keeps my putes at a low enough temp.

They kick the sh*t out of Intel/AMD chips. Some people running 1GHz G4s get dnetc speeds 4 times that of 1.8GHz P4s - 10million keys/s vs 2.4million keys/s. [Edit] Ok I got EMIII installed but the text in the EMIII window overlaps... is there any way to fix this? Also, is there anywhere in EM that shows how big the protein your working on is? I can't see some of the writing so I may just not be able to see it.
