Would a prologue in W.Elizabeth and Blackwater work?

First off I thought the prologue in Colter was perfection as is. It was atmospheric, tense, mysterious and acquainted us with the major gameplay mechanics. I don't think the game missed anything by not showing us what happened previously.

However, the initial gameplay trailers showed Arthur in Blackwater and on the plains of West Elizabeth, and I always lamented how we never got to go there without being hunted by Terminators. Obviously the gameplay trailer was a showcase so I don't believe it was necessarily intended to be a part of Arthur's game.

My question is would a prologue set in Blackwater, West Elizabeth and Tall Trees have worked? We still could have been absent from the Ferry robbery as intended and so it would remain a mystery to us. My only issue with trying to work it out would be how to prevent the player from exploring the rest of the map, or even New Austin(or maybe that wouldn't matter?).

Here we could see the gang set up somewhere outside of Blackwater, maybe in Tall Trees, and be slowly introduced to gang life before sh*t hit the fan and to major gameplay mechanics;

How the camp works.

Hunting and camping in Tall trees with Charles.

Shopping, gambling, NPC interaction mechanics in Blackwater etc

Making money

Robbery, witness, wanted mechanics etc etc, all introduced in one segment rather than spread out across chapter 2.

The prologue could be slow paced, we get to meet Jenny, the Callander boys and the rest of the gang, the Hosea scam and the chapter ending with the ferry heist happening off screen, and Arthur coming in at the last moment with a madsive shootout in Blackwater and then the escape North into the mountains. The Colter chapter can follow straight on as part of the prologue or as Chapter 1, perhaps even being extended somehow.

How would you make it work?

I thought it was fine. Rewinding the story that much to include a "introduction phase" so to speak, would made the actual epilogue and even chapter one a little drawn out and maybe boring.

I think RDR could've benefited from the story starting a little earlier. I would've liked to seen how everything went down prior to John arriving in Blackwater.

How would that be any different to having the RDR2 story start any earlier?

Both are slightly redundant. As I said, Rdr2 started brilliantly...but this is more of a what-if. I've started revising the story which incorporates New Austin instead of Guarma. Will obvs be sh*t compared to anything Rockstar write, but I'm doing it to see how to get two things many fans really want into it.

Would have loved to explore New Austin as Arthur.

My initial premise sees Dutch, Micah and Arthur wind up in New Austin instead of Guarma and have a whole chapter there. It's here that we really feel alienated from Dutch and Micah(pulling strings). These are the only people I'd have in NA, the rest are elsewhere.

I've just got to find a way of them ending up there. Maybe they go west down Lannahechi river and end up in Thieves Landing.

i like that. 3 of my favorite characters. also in your rewrite do you have the three meet new austin characters? from the red dead redemption 1 story? i would love to see how the trio reacts to west dickens or seth.

I'm only outlining it so far, very vague. But no, I haven't got any plans for RDR characters to make an appearance. It's fan-servicey enough! I figure Armidillo would be more or less deserted due to the cholera outbreak and falling apart. Tumbleweed is a mess because there's no railway links there and Del Lobos could be about.

The hardest thing with New Austin is that is doesn't have the same thematic hook to it as Guarma and would feel like repeating old ground covered in RDR. The main thing for me is imagining a prologue in West Elizabeth.

I think it would've been bad from a pacing point of view to have such a crucial part of the story happen so early on, even without Arthur involved.

Maybe, if maybe they do a story dlc. They could a prologue of the events leading to Blackwater. Where we would meet the character's that were dead already before the game started.

Flow-wise, it would either have to work as a very short tutorial section (leading to a shorter and less on-rails Grizzlies chapter), or it would work as a self-enclosed story arc.

Would personally love to see the later as a DLC, as it offers the opportunity to flesh out story elements and characters as well. I fact, RDRII would have worked well with a set of self-enclosed story DLCs that 'inhabited' the world and explored it from different perspectives, sort of the way they did with GTAIV.

Still holding out hope for some SP content down the road, but with RDO looking the way it is, it seems more and more unlikely, unfortunately.
