Do you think all Rockstar Games take place in one whole universe?

Apologies if someone has already done this topic before.

But do you guys think every Rockstar game takes place in one universe?
Personally I do, though it's a little niddy-gritty.

For example, I would count Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2 as being the earliest known events in this universe (in terms of stories, not so much world building)

Then, I suppose L.A Noire would be next, followed by Max Payne 1 and 2, then Manhunt, Bully, Manhunt 2, and then GTA IV as well as EFLC, then Max Payne 3. After that, I guess GTA V happens and I suppose Online too, though I personally wouldn't count Online because it's timeline is completely screwed.

But, that's only my idea of it.  What are your guy's opinions on it? And yes, I am aware that there is no clear answer, and that the GTA 3D era exists too, I'm just simply sticking with HD era for sake of simplicity as I don't have time to create a giant roadmap. I leave games like Bully, Max Payne 1/2, and the Manhunt games in because they are mentioned in various easter eggs (Like the show I'm Rich in GTA IV, or that one conversation Michael has during the beginning of a heist in GTA V) or because they technically have HD games that canonically have 3D titles too (Like Max Payne 3.)

Edit: It has come to my attention that I have poorly phrased this question. What I was really trying to ask is do you think all HD Rockstar Games take place in the same universe? Aside from Max Payne 3 I mean.

No, basic example: MCLA is in real life LA while GTAV is in LS.

Nope. In Red Dead New York exists.

Put a middleterm option in the pool, since Bully, GTA, Red Dead and Manhunt make some sense do be in the same universe, but not Max Payne and Midnight Club.

Yeah, that's fair enough.

Personally, as dumb as this sounds, I like to think that in the Rockstar universe there is our version of the USA, as well as Rockstar's version.

Its dumb but I find it funny to think that like, in this universe, the US Government decided to make Liberty City, Los Santos, Vice City and other places just to put the worst of the citizens living in places like New York, LA, Miami, ect. Like a thing of natural selection. The worst people get sent to these parody cities while the actual people live in the actual US cities!

(I feel I should say that I dont take this too seriously, I just think it's fun to think about!)

3D cities have totally different layouts than HD.  It's hard to think there are two different cities with the same names in the same general area.

Well, that's why I differentiate 3D and HD GTA games

Maybe not universe, but the same multiverse.

Nope, the only one I could see that could possibly share the same universe is GTA and Red Dead Redemption.

Hmmm nice bike

I kind of wish they would have set Red Dead in the HD GTA universe. It just feels like it makes sense for it to be set in the same universe but at different time periods. Considering Manhunt and Bully are in the GTA universe (not sure whether they extend into the HD universe or if they're 3D universe only), I don't see why they could make RDR another addition. Then, the "Red Dead" book in GTA V that was written by a "J. Marston" would actually be more than just a little easter egg referencing their other series.

Otherwise, it's just GTA, Manhunt, and Bully that are more or less in the same universe as each other. Max Payne 1 & 2 and L.A. Noire were only published by Rockstar but not even fully developed by them, other companies had a bigger hand in coming up with those games and developing them, so I definitely wouldn't even consider them to be a part of any sort of Rockstar universe. Max Payne 3 obviously was made entirely by Rockstar, but that's still in the same universe as the Max Payne titles made by Remedy.

No because not even all GTA's take place in the same universe.

I do know that Rockstar loves to recycle names. That's something.

Niko - Sad boi from the armpit of Europe

Nikko - Underaged to drive hyperactive drug addled street racing kid from Tokyo that threatens to knife you if you play dirty with him

Dimitri - Some Russian guy that makes practical decisions into making the world a better place

Demitri - Part of Nikko's street racing crew

Lester - Overweight cynical yet computer savvy thief with a disability

Lester - Overweight Samoan street racer in LA

Tommy - Pizza parlor pusher in Vice City

Tommy - Sweaty man that sells hot dogs in Chinatown Wars

Cheng - Street racer in Midnight Club 3

Cheng - A mob boss who can't be taken seriously

Chung Hee - Americanized Korean punk rocker trust fund baby in Midnight Club Los Angeles

Chung-Hee - Korean mob drug dealer in Chinatown Wars

Bully and manhunt are in the 3D universe as for RDR I guess its in its own seperate universe even though it should just be the past for the HD verse

I believe that in the 3D and HD universes respectively, places like SF, LS, VC, LV, and also liberty, Carcer city and cottonmouth exist amongst their reimagination of the US. But unfortunately saint denis and the rest of the RD locations don’t exist alongside the HD GTA universe locations :/

it would be nice to have north Yankton, cotton mouth, saint denis and other locations be fictionalized versions of North Dakota, Atlanta, New Orleans and the respective south-Midwest.

No.

The Warriors & Midnight Club both feature NYC instead of LC

Red Dead specifically mentions New York City so I doubt it

No! The only only ones that shared the same universe were these:

- Grand Theft Auto Series (3D Era only)

- Bully

- Manhunt 1 & 2

I still don't buy it that Liberty City and New York City can't possibly ever exist in the same universe. I mean, why not? LC is based on New York, in is NOT New York.

The guys at Rockstar definitely don't pay attention to details too well. There is a song on SA's K-ROSE about New York city, while GTA's counterpart is LC.

That might spawn two logical questions (even though it may sound absurd).

THERE IS another city called NY in the 3D Era? but I doubt that

Or the audio department  mixed that radio in a hurry without even paying attention to the in-game details?

Name me two cities in the same geographical region that both have similar landmarks, features, etc.

I mean even tho songs are exempt you can't not call Rockstar out on knowingly pulling sh*t like that.

What do you want them to do re record the song and hope it sounds like the original? Hire a cover band? What happens if like the musician dies or has been dead for like 40 years do they bring them back from the dead so they can rerecord it?

But it was a good song (I'm assuming you're talking about that "An angel fell in New York City" - don't know the actual name - song on K-Rose). And I think the game is better with it, despite the 'inconsistency' it creates.

Im talking about literally any song that does it.

For example, Rockstar could’ve picked any Bob Seeger song than “Hollywood Nights” to be in gta 5. But then again, they already had another Bob Seeger song ingame, and rockstar never has more than one song from the same artist in the same game (except for rare circumstances like having a few Phil Collins songs when he made a physical appearance in VCS), so if anything it’s rockstar being inane just for the sake of being inane

Man that’s such an illogical suggestion it doesn’t even make sense. To remove EVERY song that references a real life location would be like 80% of all games music catalogue. “Just don’t use the song” is a sorry excuse.

and the “only one song from one artist” bit is VERY FALSE. Double check the soundtracks and you’ll see many songs from the same artist.

Songs that mention real life locations are fine, my real problem are songs that mention the real life equivalent of cities that have already been mentioned in GTA. Like what is GTA 4 gaining from having "New York Groove" in it and what is GTA 5 gaining from having "Hollywood Nights" and "Los Angeles" on the soundtrack? There's several similar enough rock songs that could've fit the bill

Gta da featureing eazy e, Nwa, snoop dogg and ice cube songs. They each have like 2-3 and Gta v having Gucci mane, ASAP rocky, young scooter and Kendrick Lamar each with like 3-4 songs of their own.  An artist isn’t limited to just one song per game. It doesn’t work like that. Just an immediate example that came to mind
