That gap between 8 and 10 triggers me.

I voted 9/10. I love the atmosphere, the city, the no-nonsense straightforward crime story and the open-ended mission design. It's a bit outdated now I'm afraid, but GTA III is nonetheless a revolutionary masterpiece and an important title in gaming's history.

I see that I voted 9 last yer, but now having spent a few weeks playing it I have been reminded that this game is not worse, and occasionally even better than SA despite an obvious age difference. Changed my vote to 10. If it isn't a perfection then nothing is.

To be fair, III was the only game of the franchise I have never finished. I bought it yesterday on PS4 since it was on sale. I have learnt to re-discover it and though its mechanics seem a bit outdated, particularly those regarding shooting — it can be a real pain to shoot at a group of enemies, even with the automatic aim offered by the PS2 port — the game is surprisingly very enjoyable and FUN to play.

For its time, it is probably worth a 9/10; still today, I would rate it at least 7/10.

Back in the day it would have been a 10/10 for me. I've been playing GTA since 98 but III is what made me a fan.

But now? It gets a solid 8. I still love this game, I have a lot of nostalgia for it. It has a great soundtrack, my favorite stations were the Scarface station and Lips106. And I actually liked that parts of the city were too dangerous to enter after you've progressed the story, it made it all the more worthwhile to acquire those unique bullet proof vehicles. I loved the city, especially Staunton Island. It was very atmospheric for its time, dark, gloomy, gritty, beautiful. I used to spend a good while car surfing around Staunton and admiring the tall buildings. The game also has the greatest GTA quote of all time.

I gave it an 8 because some of the game play hasn't aged well, such as not being able to dive out of moving vehicles, if you get your toe wet you drown, no flying vehicles other than the tricky to fly Dodo (I could never get it to work), and the city feels a little small (even back then I thought it was a little on the small side.)

But it truly is one of the greats.

5/10. If I had played this back when it first came out, I might've given it a 10. If it wasn't for GTA III, then we probably would've never gotten the other amazing games. I like Claude and Liberty City's dark and gritty atmosphere. Most of the missions were fun, and most of my favorite gangs are in this game. However the gameplay is now outdated and somewhat difficult for newer players, the city lacks color, the radio lacks good music, and the story wasn't as interesting as the others.

It's still an all-time classic though.

GTA3 is the last true GTA like others have said.  Although Vice City and San Andreas have remnants of the original flavour, as those titles were released the magic was slowly shifting as the team experimented more with both gameplay and the ability to get more out of the engine, before RAGE. GTA3 felt like GTA2 & 1 in feel, and that is core GTA.
The arcade magic has gone, and I want it back! give me rampages, pay n' sprays, bomb shops, etc.
