Since VC, SA, IV, and V already have their threads akin to this one, why can’t the one and only GTA III, or as I like to call it, the unofficial GTA that started the whole thing off! I’d rate it a solid 8/10, thus being only slightly behind IV, EFLC, and VC. What about you guys?

I'd rate it around 6.5 to 7/10.

It was revolutionary and groundbreaking for its time, but it didn't age so well when it comes to mechanics, storytelling and character development. Still a very good game with a fantastic atmosphere, though.

Even now... a perfect 10. Revolutionary and groundbreaking for video games as a whole, and while some elements of the game have not aged well... no other GTA offers the level of freedom this one has.

I might be (extremely) biased by giving it 10/10 , sure I can sense couple of eyebrows being raised, but without going too far into the details, I enjoy playing this game more than I enjoy playing GTA V. As a matter of fact I don't remember ever going back to V to this day, after I had beaten it back in 2013/14. Hell, not even to take a casual drive around the city. On the other hand, I can't remember was there a single year since GTA III's release back in '01 in which I haven't beaten the story line at least once.

Just to scratch the surface a bit and without any unnecessary romanticizing, despite its "primitive" mechanics, that game still offers quite a lot in the same department, much more than what it seems at the first glance. I really like the fact that since everyone is so eager to get rid of you there, the game itself is pretty unforgiving, but in a strange, good kind of way, ultimately providing some palpable challenge. In technical sense of things, there's literally no loading, waiting or grinding whatsoever and everything is done in a matter of seconds. City itself feels quite larger than it actually is - like VC and SA as well. Amazing feat. The story is "lighthearted" and its entire plot is as simple as its premise itself, with no intention to deeply get involved with huge spectrum of emotions and moral dilemmas or unexpected twist and turns and what not, yet it pulls you in every single time. Not to mention dark and gritty atmosphere. Quite simple, but amazingly effective in everything that it has to offer.

8/10 objectively

10/10 subjectively

One of the most impactful and revolutionary games in video game history.

The jump from 2D to 3D was insane and it paved the path for what we see GTA today and many other open world games were inspired from this game.

The game might have not aged well and there's less features and the story doesn't have much depth but based on the impact it had on the series it deserves a 10.

It's my second favourite 3D era GTA. Some things haven't aged that well, but that's to be expected given it's almost 2 decades old. I think at its heart it still has a lot of charm. The devilishly haunting atmosphere has always felt like a dress rehearsal for games like Manhunt and The Warriors.

On the downside a lot of smaller, but important mechanics the later games have are really missed in GTA III. The over aggressiveness of gangs can also be a bit annoying.

Just a reminder that this is my point of view about the game if I take it by today's standards. But in case I wanted to rate it relying on its impact on the franchise and how it was in its time, I sure as hell give it a solid 10/10 without thinking a second.

A 10 well deserved.

III no matter how badly it has aged is and always will be the grandfather of all the gta's counting the 3D universe onwards. Forget about the damn story not being so grate "even though it was for the time and had a decent cast". The freaking game shocked everyone back in it's release time. Truly a revolutionary genre for the sandbox genre.

About 8/10.

It is a very good game, and I definitely had fun playing through it back in the day (about 10 years after it came out). Still with its flaws - the city isn't that interesting, and you can't jump out of moving cars (Damn You Muscle Memory!) Still, it laid down the fun gameplay I love GTA series for, and, consequently, is very fun to play.

9/10 or more precisely 94/100. Keep in mind that I rate games based on their time. As an example I don't count the outdated mechanics as flaws unless they are outdated for 2001. Anyways GTA 3 is my fifth favorite GTA but objectively speaking I believe it's the best Grand Theft Auto title after San Andreas.

That's the only way to properly rate it. It's a 9/10 for me too. The story is pretty solid. Gameplay is good too. I love the characters and stuff. I think they created a good representation of the Italian mob with awesome actors despite the story being a bit more basic. I used to think that the story in Mafia I was better but it's actually not really all that well written.

GTA III is a bit like The Sopranos of the series.

I have put a 9 for a lot of reasons. I don't know where to start because at the time I write one reason I have already thought three so probably I will miss some points.

First we have remember GTA 3 is the game that initiated 3D sandbox games, as well as most games have a hero as a protagonist 3 made us love a criminal, a scumbag. We have an open world which we can freely roam, however locked islands force you to play and advance the game giving you incentives like unlocking next part of the map if you do the missions. That map overall is big compared to other games and the game takes place all over it, thing that increases reality and deepness, two necessary things even more worked when you include the sounds and the feel of the city (pedestrains, flying planes...) achieving a complete atmosphere. Moving to the graphics part, it's obvious if you compare GTA 3 with some modern games they look old and unrealistic but then we also have other present-day games with similar graphics and people is ok with them, but anyways GTA3's are neither bad. Judging the whole game there are no possibilities to get a negative view because GTA 3 is still better than a lot of games we see nowadays. Well, for now I think it's enough, although there's a lot of things to say yet.

Rated 9/10.

Would have given it 10, but can't really force myself to do it after all of the improvements that VC and SA brought.

Nonetheless, III is an incredibly realistic captivating game with a beautiful world and interesting missions - some challenging, some easy, some annoying, but with just the perfect balance of each.

I'd liketo rate 0. But in your system, the least count is 1. So that would be my choice.

GTA3 is hardly even recognizable as a GTA game if one is to compare it to what the series is now because it was very different game belonging to a very different era of gaming when games knew to be games and not interactive movies. GTA3 was the last game to even really be GTA.

10/10. Just about as perfect a game as you're likely to find. Amazing setting, biting satire, a simple but engaging story, incredible voice cast, a small map which allows you to get to know it, missions which offer the player more freedom than even newer entries in the series, a huge difficulty spike which gives players a sense of accomplishment.

And more than that, it feels personal. There are so many little jokes and such a charming amateur quality to some of it, that it really feels like a passion project that Rockstar was having so much fun making.

10 its the game that made me a gamer and no gta other than SA captured the feeling of that dangerous treacherous city. The story was simple but effective and the satire was just right

I would give it a 7, to me I think this is a fair score because yes this game probably has alot stuff that should of been in this game and the least played gta (for me anyways) but then you gotta remember this is Rockstar's first 3D era GTA game, so it's better to treat it as some classic then just a steaming pile of trash.

8/10.

I recently replayed this on PS4. I absolutely love this game's grim atmosphere. And the music is probably the GTA with the most consistent favourites. MSX being a real highlight for me, Rise FM is a really good little mix and a whole channel of Georgio Moroder, excellent!

The controls are a bit wooden/basic with tge combat, but I like the driving here for the age of the game.

A small complaint in going back would be how shorter the story is and the lesser side content overall, but it's just nitpicking long after many further releases grew the franchise, as with my recent Vice City post on this topic in that section, easily my favourite videogame of the time. A rightful classic. :)

I'd give it an 8/10 now.  Still enjoy playing this one a lot.  Would have said 10/10 initially of course.  3 pretty much solidified GTA as my favorite game series.

In hindsight, the whole effect 9/11 had on it is unfortunate.  Would have been nice to have a more manageable Dodo from the start, or barring that, maybe a Sea Sparrow heli.  Being that it was the first 3d game, it would have been nice if they made more use of the verticality of the map in my opinion.  I understand why they made the changes, just kind of a bum deal for everyone.

I think just knowing what 3 did for the series and gaming as a whole, it's still worthy of pretty high review scores.  Now come on Rockstar, make that game with the 3d era maps all in one, and yep, give it an online mode.  Thanks in advance.

This game's just a classic… nothing more to say. Of course there are people that would now might have something against it… guys, this game's almost 2 decades old!

There are quite a lot bugs in III but these are also in smaller scale still present in VC, SA and Stories games (eg. with increasing time you played on your save, traffic starts to behave strangely).

The only thing that makes me p*ssed off about III is that Dodo wasn't meant to be flyable, but that can be easily explained: engine limitations.

Even after 18 years from release, GTA III is still great game, I always enjoy playing this game again from time to time.

8/10.

For it's time? 10/10. There's no denying the impact it has had on Video Games and the risks Rockstar took and the controversies surrounding it.

It's a really good game, but it's not quite Vice City or San Andreas standards to me. I just prefer the atmosphere of those games more, they edge over it, especially Vice City, which is really vibrant and has Tommy to play as.

Excellent post...sums up my feelings too.

I don't care how old a game is, I'm still rocking it if I consider it a classic. I still playing Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Tekken 3, Unreal Tournament, NBA 2K11, etc. Sh*t, I even rock Zaxxon, Donkey Kong, & Defender on my old ColecoVision. I never get tired of great games.
