Both consoles will be great, regardless. There are some issues concerning parts/pricing and availability at launch as per the Bloomberg article. But the PS5 is going to be a powerful machine. And I think the Series X might have a slight power advantage. Just like the PS4 had a power advantage over the base Xbox One. But who cares? Both consoles will have a proper generational leap. Schreier is very well informed so he won't be making up those messages he's been getting however there are reports that would imply that the "superior in many ways" part to be a little hyperbolic. From what I understand, the XSX is locked at the clockspeeds it advertises which means it is very predictable to develop for. The PS5 has variable clockspeeds and how that exactly works and how to develop around that I'm guessing will be something that needs to be figured out. There's more to it of course but that's kinda the jist for the new consoles, or in layman's terms, Microsoft went for a tried and tested approach that everyone is comfortable with where as Sony thought outside the box a bit and have built a machine that may have a higher potential in terms of performance but it will require some figuring out - which can take years. The big potential issue is that for multiplatform titles it will require more time and tinkering to optimise the games on PS5 due to those variable clocks and other features and the Xbox SSD's speed being slower means it will hold back the benefits of the PS5 SSD's bonkers speed in multiplatform titles. PC versions will also possibly hold games back too, as HDD's are still common in that space. Essentially, it's highly likely that for multiplatform games the Xbox Series X versions will look and run the best and it's probably going to be as simple as that. PS5 exclusives however may do some pretty bonkers stuff as they can take full advantage of the hardware and not worry about optimising it for other consoles or hardware configs. We get to see the PS5 and hopefully we’ll get a PS5 exclusive gameplay reveal. They’ve always shown games with their new consoles before so I’m optimistic about that. Four years between seems like a reasonable timeframe. The first game is still one of the best looking games on console to this day so no doubt the sequel on next-gen hardware will look bonkers good too. Will be a good showpiece game for them. The flying/moving at high speeds without drastically lowering the quality of the environment. Finally Spider-man will actually feel like Spider-man when swinging in the city. And in Horizon it should be possible now to actually have flying mounts. Gonna be really cool. Like that statue being straight up ported into the "game" (supposedly it was a playable demo) is absolutely incredible, but that's gotta be a gigantic file lol. Photogrammetry is insanely cool but I do wonder how that demo would look if it was a full game with multiple levels and tons of textures, if asset fidelity is becoming a non-issue then file size is going to become a huge one. We don't need game sizes inflating again. It is exciting to think about either way and it seems like a potential big step in the right direction. Jason Posted May 16, 2020 Author Share Posted May 16, 2020 I expect we'll see 4k/30 as the go-to for many open world games and the like with 4k/60 for shooters, but any decent shooter these days is 60 anyway. I doubt much is going to change when it comes to frame rate, visuals are easier to sell to the masses than frame rate and hey they don't know much better. What I'd love and have spoken about for a while now is simply giving players the choice. 4k30, 4k/60 with tuned down visuals, or 1080p/60, or whatever. My desire to see aspect ratios like 21:9 supported ties into this as well. By all accounts consoles are becoming more PC-like but if it's going to get there they need to support the one hugely important thing PC has over consoles, choice. They might save that one for a later date. Games I expect to see this event: - Bluepoint remake (Demon's Souls?) - Sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn - Insomniac game (either Ratchet and Clank or Spider-man 2) - Silent Hill reboot Less likely to be there: - Gran Turismo 7 - Sony Santa Monica game - Bend Studio game They are probably gonna show some third-party games as well. Jason Posted May 29, 2020 Author Share Posted May 29, 2020 Given that they've been criticised in the past for announcing games way too early, something they've wanted to fix, I aint expecting a triumvirate of Horizon 2, Spider-Man 2 and God of War 2 as I doubt all three are out within two years. I expect we'll see one of them, probably Horizon 2 although there were apparently leaks around Spider-Man 2 so maaaaaybe. The Demon Souls remake and the Silent Hill reboot rumours don't seem to want to go away either so could see one or both of them I guess. I don't expect that much 1st party launch stuff outside of potentially announcements for enhancement patches tbh, I think instead we'll get mostly third party stuff, like Godfall gameplay and more. Maybe things like Outriders or Bethesda stuff (as they aren't doing their own show), so potentially GhostWire Tokyo or Deathloop.... or Starfield, as there were recent rumours that pointed towards a potential trailer being rated. EA and Ubisoft have their show so I dunno if we can expect them to show anything, AC Valhalla is a MS marketing game so probably not that but there's other stuff that maybe getting cross-gen launches like Watch Dogs 3 and Gods & Monsters. There was also talk that the show isn't going to be quite as packed as rumours previously suggested so maybe it'll be a case of a few gameplay demos making up the meet of the hour or so. But those are definitely in early development so we won't be hearing from those for a while. All other studios will work on their new established franchises and I can't blame them. There's been rumours Sony are going to pick up one or two studios over the past year or two, less as a response to MS's expanding 1st party studios but more as a bolstering while you're ahead approach.
