Honestly I think the only way I’d get the Pro is if my current PS5 kicked the bucket.

Just don’t have much interest in mid gen refreshes of any kind. The only exception was the old 360 arcade I had, but then upgraded to the S model In 2010. I’d rather wait for the next generation instead.

In saying that it feels like 2025 is going to be HUGE for Sony. Besides GTA VI I think Death Stranding 2 is going to be pushed hard as an anchor title for the PS5/Pro.

Regarding the price in AUD I reckon it’s going to be right smack on $1000 since the current PS5 is about $800.

$600 price point would be absurd lol. Sorry but who would buy it? Sony or let's say the PS5 still lacks a system seller even four years later! and there's nothing really on the horizon either. These four years have been nothing but a letdown in terms of Sony.

I am glad tbh because this makes my decision NOT to buy a PS5 Pro so much easier. Cannot wait for the Switch 2 reveal which should be way more exciting.

The Pro is for enthusiasts who want the games they play to look and run better, this includes 1st and 3rd party games. Having Pro patches for the big online games would be a good way to sell the Pro on it's own tbh.

But the PS5 doesn't even have any games which even use the standard capabilities?

The idea nothing uses the PS5 to it's standard capabilities is factually false and as far as takes go it needs to be thrown in the bin. The PS5, like the X, is on it's f*cking knees running modern games lmao. The native resolution in games is sub 1440p in 30fps modes in some cases and sub 900p in 60fps modes, in games with raytracing and without. We'll still see improvements in terms of visuals as the tech matures as raytracing is still relatively new, but yea, the idea we've not had a game that's pushed the hardware is a crock of sh*t.

Anything that uses raytracing could see substantial improvements with and without a Pro patch - more stable 30fps, locked higher dynamic resolution. With a Pro patch they could potentially enable 60fps in quality modes or enhance the raytracing visuals, or just do a native resolution boost. The console also has PSSR, which should be a better option than FSR2, which when combined with native res boosts could see a big improvement to image quality on games played on the Pro, with image quality taking a nose dive this gen so devs can push visuals and or frame rate high.

For 1st party, only really Spider-Man uses RT so far, so that could see patches. But I'm going to presume most 1st party in future will utilise raytracing, I think Death Stranding 2 is believed to be using it, and Wolverine you'd think will use it based on Insomniac using it in Spider-Man. Horizon FW never used it, but their engine is being used by Death Standing 2 which again seems to be using it. Santa Monica, Naughty Dog and Sucker Punch will all potentially use it as well if I had to guess. Beyond 1st party, Ubisoft games now use RT as standard for lighting, GTA VI looks likely to use RT on console, plus various other games have used RT already with more no doubt a lot more to come.

And the reason I'm banging on about RT is because going by all the leaks improved RT performance is the big thing on the Pro, it's something Mark Cerny him self said is being used far earlier than he thought it would, and a lot of the thinking behind the Pro is very likely a reaction to that.

I know that there hasn’t been much stuff releasing recently, but saying that the PS5 has no system sellers and no games that use the capabilities of the console is straight up false.

The most beautiful visuals mean sh*t to me if there's 0 invention on the gameplay part ... which has been the case in every PS5/Series X game thus far. The so called next-gen. lol

Astro Bot is the best first party game from Sony for PS5 yet and this should be concerning?

The corner stone of this narrative of how there's been no games in the past four years. Of course, it misses the most point which is that first and foremost games are meant to be fun and there's been plenty of fun games in the past four years. The second thing it also misses is the people still banging on about this narrative 4 years in wouldn't know what innovative gameplay is if it hit them square in the face. This is the f*cking AAA industry mate, innovation hasn't been a thing in the way this narrative suggests in about 30 years.

That said, these past four years have had some of the greatest games ever made released in them, such as Elden Ring, an open world game with some of the greatest open world level design in the history of games, that will and already has influenced level design in open world games. You also have Baldur's Gate 3, arguably the greatest RPG of all time, with a whole host of features and systems that are levels above virtually any other RPG's such as a sandbox world allowing immersive sim style solutions to quests and probably the deepest and best RPG companions we've ever seen.

But you don't play these games, which is fine, but it doesn't mean these games don't exist or weren't incredible.

Ye but the games you mentioned could run or even DO run on previous harware as well. The point of buying a PS5 has not been made to me YET and will possibly be so until GTA VI releases. I thought this new tech would give us innovative gameplay but it didn't so far. Also some of the greatest open world games from the last decade or so are from Nintendo and RDR2 of course ... Elden Ring did copy a lot from them.

Pick a stance and stick with it. Unless you think innovation is tied to hardware, in which case... aren't you a massive Nintendo fan?

The main thing with new hardware is improved visuals and it always has been, this gen is no different.

No it didn't. Elden Ring is a From game through and through, set in a genre which From literally created. Their approach to their open world design is completely different to RDR2 and BoTW/ToTK.

I know some people who bought a PS5 just to play Spider-Man 2.

And yeah. Saying that no game in the last 4 years has taken advantage of the standard capabilities is such a load of bollocks lol.

Honestly, so far this generation has been disappointing to me as well, I feel like most AAA studios are creatively bankrupt. If GTA VI didn't exist, I probably wouldn't even consider getting a PS5 Pro. However, like others said, it just isn't true that current consoles' standard capabilities haven't been used yet. Those consoles aren't even that powerful by today's standards. Also, in a span of 30 years we went from first 3D games to almost photorealistic-ish graphics in some games. There's just no way for generational improvements to be as visually significant as they were before.

For me, as a primarily PC (which gets most games nowadays), 2022 was quiet as I'm not a From fan and ER was the big game that year, and it felt like the year where covid hurt the most, but 2021 was good (It Takes Two is arguably the best co-op game ever for me) and 2023 was one of the greatest years ever for games, the stats back it up as well in terms of games scoring highly. But most console generations start slow, the big big stuff isn't gonna be launched when an install base is small, which was the benefit of cross-gen as from a Sony PoV we got games like Spidey 2, Horizon FW and GoW:R really early in the generation when in the past they'd be really hesitant to release games like that only 2 years into a gen.

We're obviously now getting to the business end of the generation when studios main project for this generation will start getting announced and released. Based on what's been announced for 2025 so far I get the impression 2025 is gonna be heavy with games with big games dropping most months. GTA VI is the big one of course but I think some people not familiar with the franchise might get a little surprise when Monster Hunter Wilds drops. The previous mainline MH game has sold over 25 million copies total and shipped 5 million in it's first three days, and not only has the franchise only grown in popularity since it's now releasing day 1 on PC too.

Beyond MH though when I think of games I've got my eye on next year it feels like there's a good dozen I might end up buying or playing through GP on day 1. It feels like the games that got hit by covid all got bunched up and are gonna pack out 2025 and 2026... sorta curious if there will be any big games left for what will probably be the final years of the gen, 27-28. Elder Scrolls 6 maybe? Sorta feel like Xbox might use that as a launch console for their next console... if they don't launch their console earlier, anywho.

Yea Brits and Europeans are getting the shaft as per w/ computer hardware. In GBP, 700 USD is £536 today lol.

Yep lol. No wonder they left it for the final few seconds. No drive either is mad for that price, right now that's priced at 80-100 quid to buy separately.

Can't even throw a cheap plastic stand in for that price either.

It's made me feel better about spending probably over a grand on a GPU in a few months time, lmao.

I was never going to get one in the first place. Being primarily on PC, I'd rather fork that cash into a new CPU+MB+ RAM and cooler, and get a used Series X and play VI on my 27" monitor lol.

Hardware based ML upscaling, like DLSS on PC. AI is just a buzzword here.

It's not new tech but it should be significantly better than the software based FSR we have on consoles today.

PSSR on paper should be a very good thing.
