Depends if it's identical hardware running at higher clocks, or newer more efficient hardware. Again, cooling is a big thing that determines size and if the extra horsepower of a GPU/CPU/whatever is coming from putting more power through it and running it at higher clocks, then you need beefier coolers. But like the picture above, you also have leaps in new hardware where it's more efficient and can run at the same or higher performance w/ smaller cooling solutions.

We'll have to see what the deal is when we see an actual proper picture and not a hand drawn mock up mind you lol.

This mock up looks pretty much how the real thing must be though, and knowing how the PS5 Fat/Slim works for a while I highly doubt these extra air inlets will do much by themselves, unless the PS5 Pro uses them to suck air into the system from one side and exhale it from the other side, but this could remove the possibility of using the console in the horizontal position depending of what happens on which side.

images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR63tZtqgWmK5UlCFibn4A

If the cooler sucks air from the top and exhales it under the console, it will create a heating zone under the console and overheat, shutting the system down or even damaging it.

If it happens the other way around, with the cooler sucking air from under the console and exhaling it from the top, it will suck all the dirt from the part of the desk the console is on top of into the system.

Not really. The Xbox Series X intakes from the bottom and exhausts out the top. PC's also do a lot of intake from the bottom, often for bottom mounted PSU's facing down, like mine. Nothing wrong with the layout, if it's designed well. In the Series X's case it's got a really simple intake/exhaust layout by design, all in one direction, and it works really well from what I've heard.

The PS5's design to my eye and amateur understanding of cooling does call for a bit of an unorthodox solution, which is one of the reasons I've criticised it's design in the past. But still, it's still got yer basic intake and exhaust layout as per every piece of computer hardware. Intakes from the top/front and exhausts out of the back and in some other vents, like at the bottom, with it sort of interestingly exhausting air out the back at a downwards angle.

It's hard to say for sure what the new vents on the side will do, we don't know the internals, it could have a completely different cooling approach, but I know removing the side panels on the base PS5 actually did improve temps so it could simply just be a case of Sony adding more exhaust vents.

I'm not saying that it doesn't work well, but it probably will require cleaning inside the console more often, after all in the Xbox Series X's case most of the air intakes are in the back of the console, with very little under it, unlike in this PS5 Pro design, which seems to depend much more of these extra intakes/exhausts. Unless one keeps his desk extremely clean 24/7 he will have to clean it inside way more often, like in every year or two.

You're right about this one, Sony prioritized its unique design from the very beginning (Fat) and have changed it very little with the Slim and Pro models, I mean, of course they won't release a faulty product to the consumers, which can't keep itself cooled, but the headache that Sony must have everytime they update it must be something else.

And this is exactly why I think that Sony may discourage players from using this console horizontally, if they're exhaust exits it will create a heating zone under the console and make it overheat.

I already removed my PS5 covers a couple of times to clean it better and I noticed that it creates heat marks on the plastic over time, which is nothing to worry about in this case since mine is positioned in a appropriate place and it most definitely is something that happens to everyone's, but imagine this with a extra heat zone under the console, it will overheat without a doubt.

No more than usual as far as I know. The dust and muck that settles on the desk/table it's resting on comes from the air, the same air which the console takes in from the top.

Like I said, it's a common setup now on PC's to have a downwards facing power supply - the intake fan faces down - and there's no issue that stems from this in terms of breathing in dust and crap.

Sure general cleanliness and the odd blow out helps... same as it does with other layouts.

Not that I expect the PS5 Pro to intake from the bottom, mind you, the design looks to be the same intake from the top/front. Exhaust out the back as w/ the other models, and added exhausts out the side is my guess. What I'm wondering if there's a change to the fan or maybe another fan or something.

Exactly, this is what is worrying me, if they aren't intakes, but exhausts instead, it can overheat the console if it's placed horizontally, the PS5 Fat/Slim already heats like crazy, let alone with hot air being accumulated under the system.

The reason I wouldn't think they're intakes is because generally you want a normal flow of air from A to B, you don't want to create vortexes or anything like that where air can get hung up. So if you're intaking from above but also below (cause they'd be below the fan, assuming it's in the same position as the other PS5 models), it'd all get swooshed up. It's entirely possible they could design around this, I'm by no means an expert on this stuff. But from a PC perspective, it's why you wouldn't want intake fans on the side panel.

So I can only assume they're exhausts, cause that seems like a natural fit.

That could be problematic if you lay it down horizontal yea, but it depends if air is being directed out of the sides by the fan. They could be more passive ventilation rather than pure exhausts. Same as the vents on the bottom of the PS5, basically.

Curious to see what their solution is tbh cause like I said, the consoles design is so heavily style over practicality I'm curious to see what their solution is.

Yeah, we'll see, but without extra info it looks like a console which can only be used vertically, take a look at how the heat spots already looks like in the current versions of the PS5, almost as if it runs at the very limit of what the components can handle (I picked this image from Reddit, it isn't mine).

Now imagine this with a air exhaust accumulating even more hot air under the system...

I wouldn't say it's a problem they can't find a solution out of, cause I think they could, but yea, it might not be ideal.

I don't think it'd be some massive issue though if it's just passive venting and not something fans are directing air out of. Again, depends how they'll do it.

I really hope it isn't a problem for players who prefer to use their consoles horizontally, while I'm not interested in the PS5 Pro itself, it isn't a good sign for the PS6, which is what I'll be interested in once it shows up in 2027/2028.

Current talk around the Pro is that it'll actually run pretty quiet and cool. It'd be nice, but after owning the PS4 Pro, I doubt any console will ever be as loud as that one again. And I think the heat issue mainly boils down to how well you treat your console and the air surrounding it. Was at my nephews the other week and I had to tell him to turn his PS5 off because it was that hot, hit enough that it was heating up a Switch that was docked about 20cm away behind it. Never had that issue myself.

Just wondering, but who else is hyped for Astrobot?

The last few days I’ve been playing Playroom to get myself into the mood. As I’ve said before Playroom was the first PlayStation game I ever platinumed so it holds a special place in my heart. Best pack in game ever IMO. Not only does it do a phenomenal job of showcasing the duelsense it also has so many nostalgic throwbacks to PlayStation’s history it makes old diehards like me all warm and fuzzy inside. It’s an old school 3D platformer with all the modern bells and whistles.

Astrobot looks like it’ll be a lot of fun and I hope it does really well just like Lego Horizon Adventures. I’ll probably get that for PS5 and Switch because why not lol.

I like that Sony are pushing some more family friendly type games. Reminds of the 90s/00s “mascot” era when we had Spyro, Crash, Gex, Jak and Daxter etc.

I have the Astrobot Dualsense pre-ordered so I am very much looking forward to that.

I will probably get the game in a few months time.

Shame we haven't seen much of an attempt at a revival of the at era, given that they lost Crash some time ago, and how great a game R&C Rift Apart was. Besides Astro and Ratchet, there hasn't really been much else in the platforming mascot games. Precursor Legacy is still one of my all time favourite PS2 games.

But yeah, I'll be picking the game up on day 1, and pre-ordering the controller to go with it too. Went in to Playroom fully expecting it to just be a gimmicky tech demo of sorts, but I enjoyed it a lot, so much so I only have a few remaining things to collect before completing it, which hopefully should be next week to get me ready for the new one.

(Well, I would be getting the controller if it hadn't seemingly sold out everywhere!)

I'm going to say when this state of play comes around, which is rumoured for the back end of this month, supposedly.

The PS4 Pro was announced in the first two weeks of September, I think? I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same here, and then the SoP and Tokyo Games Show focuses on games and some Pro footage/trailers.

I said it'd be dead in a week, implying player count wise.

I didn't think it'd be literally dead within two or three weeks.

That's one of the biggest flops in AAA history right there. The devs of Fairgame$ are probably bricking it now too, cause this is a pretty damning look at Sony's mentality towards GaaS shooters.

I imagine they'll tweak a lot of the monetisation stuff and rerelease it as F2P as a hail mary, but oooooooooooooooooooooooooof.

Didn't realise it'd be dead, dead... but from the GaaS push of Helldivers 2 earlier this year to now this, that's mental.

Not sure going F2P, reworking progression, and cosmetics is going to revive it either, in an already saturated market for Hero shooters...

Sony is getting what they deserves by trying to push this GaaS sh*t into everything, their fans like Story Mode games, one GaaS here and there is fine, but focusing on something completely different than what brought you success tends to cause disasters like this.

From what I've read, HD2 wasn't really part of their GaaS push. It was an unexpected success... one that's been one f*ck up after another since it's launch mind you. It's no where near as popular as it once was and a lot of that is due to the way it's been supported and handled by Arrowhead.

But yea, Concord's just a cursed property at this point. It was a competent game by all accounts, it just wasn't interesting, it had nothing stand out, flat character designs, arena shooter (an out of trend format), and it was launching into a market where there's an absolute ton options that people already have a lot of time and potentially money invested into - Fortnite, Apex, Siege, Overwatch, Valorant, CoD, CS, etc. Then you have the whole $40 box fee, when virtually all their competitors are F2P.

Like seriously, who ever decided to charge for Concord is in large part responsible for this mess. It might never have set the world on fire, it might never have been a success in the end, but it was doomed from the moment they wanted $40 for it.

There's a reason F2P is popular and it's because it makes it extremely easy to try a game to see if you like it, but also and just as importantly, it means you can get your friends to try a game. If me and my mates played shooting games and I bought Concord, I'd have to convince them to stop playing Fortnite, CoD or whatever and go buy this brand new shooting game they've never heard of, from a studio they've never heard of, for $40. That's a hard ask, even for the biggest fans of Concord.

It was just an absolutely terrible decision to charge for it, one of the biggest blunders in the AAA industry in recent years, if not ever especially when you take into account the cost of the games development, I mean there's some talk the game might've sold around 25k copies total. Even 100k sales is an absurdly low amount for a modern AAA game, if it sold less than that.... oof.

Now they're likely gonna retool it for F2P and try and relaunch it, and that's gonna be a massive uphill battle whatwith the rep the game has now.

I had a feeling it wasn’t going to last, but two weeks is pretty wild.

Thank f*ck Astrobot is releasing on Friday. Might bring some positivity again since almost everyone seems to be excited for that.

Astrobot reviewing as a serious GOTY contender. 93 on OpenCritic and 94 on MetaCritic as of this post.

Couldn't have come at a better time for Sony, lol. Nice to see though, a game that focuses on pure fun and entertainment with no frills or extras. Also some stuff we've not seen in a while too with the physics stuff they're doing, and the controller stuff too. Definitely would be interested in giving it a go one day when it comes to PC, which they have hinted at.

I knew it was going to review well, but damn 94?

Looks like Sony/Team Asobi have their Super Mario Odyssey. 👍

Will have to wait until morning to play it, but I’m SOOOO glad I preordered the digital deluxe edition. If those controllers haven’t sold out I’ll have to pick one up because they look so cool.

What excellent news.

Watched a bit of the DF review, and honestly, the physics, liquid and controller stuff all looks brilliant.

It's looks like a game that actually uses the DualSense to it's full extent as well, which is a big reason why I'd love to give it a go when it comes to PC. More interesting ways to interact with games is something I think gaming really needs, it's a strength of VR but I mean most people don't want to play a game in VR, so if we can get more interesting ways to interact with screen based games with traditional controllers, or maybe some type of controller later down the line, that'd be great.

Honestly thought we'd see Astro's Playroom debut on PC, tbh, so hopefully this'll come over, as it looks like a really fun and vibrant platformer as well as proper showcasing the PS5 controller.

Heard they got the OK from Xbox to feature cameo characters as well.

The studio basically gave a generic "we wanna hear from PC players" line about a PC port.

Aka it's on the list, 1-2 years after the PS5 launch. Probably have a quicker turn around than one of the bigger titles if I had to guess.
