In semi related news, FF 16, FF7 Rebirth and Foamstars all failed to meet sales expectations, all were PS5 exclusive, no day 1 release on any other platform. Square yesterday announced that, essentially, they're going multi platform now, no more exclusivity deals.

The era of games AAA games being exclusive to one piece of hardware is well and truly over, it's just not good business for anyone* anymore.

*except Nintendo, cause lower costs of hardware/software development, but everyone including them no doubt know they're leaving sh*t tons of money on the table by doing so

Just a small correction.

Foamstars was also released for PS4. However the game kinda seemed dead on arrival anyway even if it was ported to more platforms.

I tried it and didn’t mind it, but yeah. Not really surprised it missed sales metrics which is probably why it was put on PS Plus day one.

Of all the titles to risk console exclusivity on, Foamstars might've been the stupidest. In an era where EVERYONE including the maker of the console you're exclusive to knows you have to release online games on as many platforms as possible they put a niche PvP game on PS only.

It could've been a great game, and it wasn't by all accounts (and had overpriced mtx I think), but it was doomed from the start because of the exclusivity.

Is it worth it to buy a PS5 when I have a series X?

Are there many great games I am missing out on?

Right now? Depends if you owned a PS4 or not tbh.

PlayStation has a whole load great exclusives, it depends what type of games you like. Linear story driven stuff like Naughty Dog's TLOU and Uncharted, open world games like Horizon, Spider-Man and Ghost of Tsushima, hybrid linear/open world stuff like God of War, but many of these came out on PS4, so if you played them there then there's only really HFW, God of War Ragnarok and Spidey 2 so far that are PS5 games (well, HFW was PS4 too but the DLC wasn't).

If you look at those games and don't think they're for you then a PS5 is probably not worth picking up as those games are the real selling point of a PS5 to a console player. If they do interest you though, and you never played them on PS4, then I'd say it's probably worth it. Many of the PS4 games received patches for 60fps or 4k, so they all play and look great still.

If you're interested in Sony's "exclusives", yes (ignoring the fact that they're all coming to PC eventually), otherwise no.

I only bought my PS5 because of GTA6 and it will also be available for your XSX, of the games I currently have only GT7 is a true PS4/PS5 exclusive, but even this one may be released for PC eventually as well.

Yea if you own a capable gaming PC then, unless you can't wait, buying a PS5 at this point isn't a great idea. If someone in that situation has the spare cash then obv go for it, but yea, if you want 1-2 years you get the game on PC, typically decent ports, with all the DLC included.

PC in general is becoming the best all round platform because virtually all publishers now are treating PC as a first class platform, so it's inevitably getting all the games that used to be console exclusive. One of the last exceptions to this might just end up being GTA VI, which isn't PC day 1 cause R* be R*.

I have no plans to own a pc, to have one powerful enough would cost more than I can afford.

I agree, PC will become the best place for gaming eventually, when all console exclusives are available in it.

I just hope that new generations of consoles will keep being released, despite them not being as popular as before, as PC gaming in Brazil costs about as much as buying a car (a robust setup of course), consoles are and always will be the most cost benefit option for us by a country mile.

Are you interested in Sony's exclusives though? If you aren't, there isn't really a reason to buy a PS5, it does the same things that your XSX does, the graphics are the same, etc.

Consoles are still as popular as before I think, it's just... they're not more popular. Given the rising costs of game development, this has now become an issue for game studios as it means there's no more growth. The stagnant sales are more a symptom of Xbox hardware sales being on life support and PS5 sales not being as strong as they should be because they can't slash prices.

That being said, PC continues to grow and grow and grow, which we know for a fact because of Steam's public stats for active Steam accounts and concurrent players in games.

I mentioned earlier about Square going multi plat cause they're struggling, but if you want an example of a studio who saw the writing on the wall years ago and are now profiting greatly - Capcom. They now do day 1 PC for all their major releases and have done for a few years now and it's resulted in record profits every year for the past few years. They're absolutely thriving at the moment lol.

The PS5 is underpeforming compared to the PS4 just a little bit, issue which probably will get fixed next year near GTA6's release, which is the best hardware seller game. But the XS though, with much worse sales than the XO, it makes us think about the whole situation, not to mention that if a cheaper/weaker version of it didn't exist Microsoft probably would've sold only about 10 million consoles in this gen by now (2024).

I know that there will be next gen consoles by 2027, I'm just not sure about how many of them we got left.

Because of two games only? Man, idk, if you reeaallyy are interested in those two games, go for it, maybe you find some other use for the console when you get familiar with it, some other exclusive you like apart from those two.

I didn't like the PS5 appearance too much before I bought one myself, but its look started to grow on me when I bought mine and placed it in my setup, specially when it's in the horizontal position, it looks like a spaceship about to abduct me at any second lmfao.

Idk, I don't like fantasy, mithology nor superhero stuff, in other words 90% of the games or more don't interest me at all.

I reccomend GT7 though, as I have it myself.

I'm the same way, I don't like fantasy, mythology or superhero stuff, I'm the same way with movies, TV shows or books as with video games.  I don't even like car racing games that much, but I'm a car enthusiast.

I do love a sandbox and it seems like a unique one.

Mad Max was pretty amazing for exploration actually.

Yea both MS and Sony are probably hoping VI release sooner rather than later because it'll be a jolt in the arm for both of them. It's gonna be the biggest system seller of all time, lol.

I don't think one game fixes all their problems though, we are absolutely going through a period of irreversible change right now in the games industry, especially the console industry. I don't think consoles will disappear or anything, but I think the whole idea of "next-gen" as we know it today will probably change. I suspect handhelds to become more influential as well.

I'm basically like you, the only difference is that I still like racing games and shooters lol.

There's Horizon II Forbidden West too, a favorite of the GTAForums admins from what I've seen in the other topics ha.

I don't think that GTA6 will make this gen consoles sell more than the previous gen ones, but it probably will help making the PS5 sell about as much as the PS4 though, not more nor less. In the XS case though... it will improve its sales a little of course, but it won't be enough to reach the XO sales.

Spider Man was my first plat for PlayStation, I enjoyed the game that much. I usually don't pay much attention to collect-athons, but the traversal made it enjoyable, at times I found myself actually enjoying just aimlessly travelling around and doing nothing but taking the game in. I actually only have 4 plats on PlayStation, and 3 of them are the Spider Man games (Rift Part is the 4th).

The PS5 UI majorly beats the X UI too. I hate anyone who defends having ads plastered all over, and the new updated UI on the X sucks, period.

(And yes, the Horizon games are a sh*t ton of fun, with Forbidden West been one of the best looking games I've ever played... Also I'll throw in Ghost Of Tshushima, another amazing open world game. )

You got a point there, the PS5 UI rocks and it's much snappier than the XS', Sony will change it soon though, they probably did it already for beta users, let's hope for the best.

If you can afford both I don’t see why not.

Console wars asides I think they’re both great in different ways. I love the backwards compatibility on the Series X, but I also prefer the duelsense on the PS5 and of course the first and third party games.

It all depends what you want to get out of them IMO. Relatively speaking there isn’t that much difference on a play by play basis. From my experience some games can look ever so slightly better on one over the other or they might have a slightly better performance mode. It’s more their unique quirks from a hardware perspective that separates them I feel.

If you’re on the fence or not too sure about getting a PS5 atm maybe hold off a bit for the Pro that’s supposed to release later in the year. Hopefully it won’t be like it was during Covid where PS5s were as hard to find as getting blood from a stone.

To be honest I don't recommend anyone to buy a new console as soon as it releases, the chances of you getting a faulty unit are much higher than with the revised units which gets released a year or two later, as an example the last version of the PS5 Fat (CFI-1214) is way more reliable than its original version (CFI-1014).

I wonder how much more sales Sony and/or Microsoft would have if they made online gaming free to play again, like in the PS3 days, paying to play online games after already buying the game feels like such a dirty practice compared to PC.

It is, I´m PS plus free since one year. Probably will buy it again for GTA 6 Online, not before.

I dunno if they'd have made more money at all tbh. They get 100% (payment transactions aside) of the XBL/PS+ cost and they have tens of millions of subs.

This was something I worried about a bit when I got mine, but it was a risk worth taking.

Normally I wait a year or two before getting a new console. That’s what I did with my PS3 and PS4, but with my PS5 I really wanted one at launch as I’ve never owned a console at launch before.

The closest one was my XB1 which I got something like 7-8 months after launch. It’s definitely a risk with pretty much any first iteration of technology, but I’m so glad that mine atleast has been reliable albeit with the odd game crash every now and then. I’ve had it worse in the past with far more unreliable consoles further into their life cycles.

Failure rate on modern consoles is pretty low tbf, there's no concerns of anything like the PS3/360 era.

They're just typically much better designed from a cooling perspective, on pretty bog standard hardware - x86, not some niche thing like Cell or PowerPC.
