Fortunately it’s not a particularly big game.  Size wise.😉

I think it's about 16GB.  Anyway I managed to download it before I went to bed so I'm ready to go later.

Loving Helldiver's so far. Playing on PS5 and its a rarity when I am actually able to play with other people, mostly I have to play solo due to no matchmaking.

Oh it's wonky but one of the main issues is that it tries to matchmake people into the same sessions. So in my experience an easier way to get into games w/ people is to go to the less populated planets and matchmake in there. I get sessions pretty much first go when I do that.

Let's change the subject a little, what exactly makes the PS5 not able to be retrocompatible with PS3 games? Considering that it runs PS1, PS2 and PS4 games perfectly.

The hardware architecture. It's Cell vs x86, which is what every modern PC and console uses nowadays. I couldn't tell you the exact specifics on what the issue is, but from what I understand games and engines have to be made specifically for Cell, so you can't just run them on x86 hardware

and expect them to run without issues. To make matters worse, the 360 used PowerPC architecture too, so you can't just port the 360 versions (if available) easily.

The PS5 runs PS1/PS2 games through emulation AFAIK. Cell is difficult to emulate, not impossible, but difficult. I'd say it's possible for Sony who have firsthand knowledge of Cell to be able to emulate the PS3 on PS5 hardware but I mean, going by Jim Ryan's infamous quote on BC, I doubt it was ever a priority.

Yeah, I think that the PS5 only runs its own games and PS4 games natively, but if people even found a way to run PS3 games in a Steam Deck, using the RPCS3 I think, I believe that the PS5 is perfectly capable of running them with a 30FPS limiter, which would be a great way to please their consumers this year, which will be dry of their very own first party games.

Rumors says that the rumored PS5 Pro will finally come with the backwards compatibility for PS3 games, but my question is if it's really necessary to make it a exclusive feature of this new version of the console, in my opinion the PS5 Fat/Slim are already powerful enough to run such an emulator to make it a PS5 Pro only feature.

It's not like for like, but I mean, Xbox emulates PowerPC to play 360 games.

I do just think it was probably a case of Sony leadership thinking people didn't care about BC, once Xbox's BC program picked up steam and media attention Sony had to sorta scramble a bit to start figuring out how they were gonna handle it. I think it was pretty clear that even well into the PS4 gen that they genuinely had no interest in it at the top.

But could a feature like this be implemented into the current PS5 Fat/Slim with some system update or is it necessary for them to make a brand new hardware already with such a feature in mind? The PS5 Pro of course. Maybe they would need a extra CPU to emulate the Cell apart from the main PS5 CPU/APU, but it probably wouldn't be viable considering costs and power consumption, unless they could find a way of turning it on only when it's needed or some sh*t.

I mean they could perhaps do some special hardware to make it easier, but emulating Cell is possible on the hardware they have, you can emulate PS3 games on PC, it's just typically quite demanding but with every new generation of hardware it becomes easier to do it with simple brute force.

Xbox didn't need any special hardware to emulate PowerPC on the Xbox One, lol.

I don't think there was any credible rumor saying that PS5 Pro would be backwards compatible with PS3 games. I doubt such feature would be exclusive to the Pro - emulation is generally more CPU intensive and if the Pro comes out, it's most probably going to have the same Zen 2 CPU with a slightly higher frequency.

At this point, I doubt Sony is going to bother with PS3 emulation on PS5. I think there's too little incentive for them to do it, mainly nowadays when the gaming industry is in such a turbulent state. It would cost them money and even though they would probably charge people for the games again, as they do with PS2 titles, I'm not sure it would be profitable for them. They already offer some PS3 titles via streaming, so I think they will just continue doing that.

Also, emulating the Cell architecture is still tricky. Looking at RPCS3 as reference, some titles could probably run great on PS5, but there's still a lot of them that would have issues. And even if the game seems to run fine framerate-wise, there could be lots of other bugs caused by the emulation.

The issue with looking at the state of it on PC and comparing that to what Sony could do is that Sony have intimate knowledge of Cell that people developing emulators typically don't. I believe this was a big part in why Xbox BC is so good, the team making it had all the resources they need plus first hand knowledge of PowerPC.

Xbox BC is still case by case mind you, it wouldn't be a case of anything and everything would run, every Xbox BC game is handpicked, but yea. Without being any sort of expert on the subject, just looking at MS were able to achieve - which they did on the Xbox One lol - and what people have achieved on PC with PS3 emulation, I'd be surprised if Sony couldn't do the same on PS hardware. I just don't think their previous leadership ever cared about it, and it's TBD what their new leadership thinks.

Xbox didn't need any special hardware to emulate PowerPC on the Xbox One, lol.

Xbox consoles always had a much easier architecture between each other and even PC, which makes things way easier, being the ultimate reason why games on Xenia performs way better than on RPCS3, before the PS4 and PS5 dropped this difficulty of course.

It's like I said before, I believe that the PS5 Slim/Fat already has enough power to emulate PS3 games with brute force and a lot of anger, Sony should really consider adding it with some system update this year, which will be quite dry of new first party games.

I have four of them, and the Galactic Purple is my favourite.

I know it's a silly question, but you people who have a PS5 Fat and keep it in the horizontal position, do you people keep the screw inside the base or remove it to guard it in its box or somewhere else? Since you're not using it lol.

I’ve just kept mine in there since new.

Figured it’s better in there even if I’m unlikely to ever use it. Atleast I know where it is.

Inside the base since I alternate between horizontal and vertical.

All my consoles are in vertical positions now.  I did consider putting my PS5 in a horizon position but I changed my mind.

Both PS5 Fat and PS5 Slim with the disc drive looks odd in the vertical position because of the "belly".

Yes indeed 😃

Maybe Sony should have put the disc ejection button on the front of the disc drive.  Your PS5 would have a belly button then 🤣

As I think I've made my point already clear, I think they're both hideous but if I had to pick I'd choose the slim one, even though it looks even worse, just cause it'd take up less room lol.

Just the whole idea you need little cheap plastic feet or a wobbly stand to make the thing lay flat is crazy to me. It was quite clearly a console they designed to stand up straight, which is a bizarre decision when you look at the traditional home TV setup.

It was a console Sony designed to look good in the vertical position, but at the same time the early CFI-1014 version had issues with liquid metal leaking from the APU in this position, so keeping the PS5 horizontally always was the safest way of using it.

So, what internal M. 2 SSD are you guys using? Looking at picking one up this weekend, and the WD one is pretty much set on for me, unless someone has any other suggestion?

While I'm not a corporate policy expert -- using Mr. Ryans last weeks and days to announce this - does link an association to his tenure.

from MSN

This was announced by Jim Ryan, former CEO of PlayStation and today holding the same position at Sony Interactive Entertainment. “We have made the extremely hard decision to announce our plan to commence a reduction of our overall headcount globally by about 8% or about 900 people, subject to local law and consultation processes. Employees across the globe, including our studios, are impacted,” wrote Ryan in a public message.

The use of headcount, Yicks heads will role.
