As expected due to leaks, it's underwhelming.

 

Think it's trying to be spun as something that's not competing with GP but it's priced very similarly and is obviously a direct response to GP, but it's much worse value due to in large part the lack of 1st party games launching on the service day 1. Speaking of that, Jim Ryan openly said today the reason for that is that it'd impact the budgets of those games which I can understand but MS are doing what they can't and while the reason for that is obvious (MS's endless bank roll) that doesn't stop GP still being way better value.

 

Sony's 1st party is still putting out quality where as MS's has only really just started to get going (Halo, Starfield this year (hopefully)) but if MS can match their quality in the coming years this new subscription service is going to age very poorly.

If this is their plan for BC I'm disappointed. I want to own my games not stream them. If the streaming is the same sh*tty quality  as PSnow this sh*t is dead in the water already. I like what the Xbox does where it improves them without much help from the devs.

 

The PS2 games better not be the same ones from the PS2 on PS4 program they had years ago. I wanna see LCS and VCS on there.

It's a little expensive and it's a pity they don't put day and date first party titles. It's an interesting service and I hope to it gains success and Ryan changes his mind on dropping games in day and date.

This is interesting.. I don't know how much it would really affect budgets. I think that's just PR speak for the moment (IMO). I think GP's success is that it gets people into the eco-system and they buy MTX/DLC. Every MTX purchase and DLC purchase means Microsoft get a percentage on the sale. A sleeper hit indie title may not every see more than 3 million sales but it being in Game Pass means that it has 25m people that can potentially download it. If 5 million download it (and we know people are downloading games in GP just because they can, as it's zero-risk) that's an extra 2m people that play that indie hit and an extra 2m people with access to purchase MTX/DLC in their game and get the benefit being introduced to a genre or title of a game they wouldn't previously touch. 

 

Having said that, It is a risk in sense that Sony would have to pile a load of money into it and there's no guarantee. Microsoft have that "f*ck-you" money. And as Nadella says, they're "all-in" on gaming. 

 

PlayStation have a loyal base of fans, happy and willing to pay more premium rates for titles. A common thing I hear is that they want to "support the devs." I don't see how a subscription service doesn't support the devs. They have an agreement with the publisher. 

 

For example, if Spiderman or TLOU sells around 20m copies, that's powerful. But it's still only a fraction of PS4/PS5 console owners. It's only about one 6th of 120m PS console owners. Now, imagine you have 50m subscribers to one of these tiers and they release day and date on PS. Imaging the amount of people that will download the game, those that may not have tried it. Even if that figure is 10m, that's 10m more users of that game. Imagine if just 1m of them by some skins or DLC.

Imagine PS released their first party titles day and date on a subscription.. but if you want to buy them (I still like buying my personal favourite games), but they offer them at a discount to subscribers. 

 

I love GP and I think some of the games on PS are brilliant. But I think PS can do better. GP is so much fun, especially for trying crazy new games you wouldn't normally risk purchasing at full price.

Based on info we've had through leaks and MS;

 

Games Pass has no impact on the sale figures of games on GP

MS pay for every third party game on there, GoTG is rumoured to have been $10-$15million

And last but most importantly, it's sustainable as is it exists right now, aka it's not running at a loss

 

If the last of those is true, MS's f*ck you money then isn't being used to cover the losses but purely to invest in the future through acquisitions as we've all seen. On top of that, it makes Jim Ryan's claims massively sus, especially when he also said "but things can change very quickly".

One thing I was hoping from this service was a wide selection of PS1, PS2, and PS3 titles that I can play on modern hardware. Now we know that PS3 titles are streaming-only (which was to be expected I guess), but Sony's wording doesn't give me much confidence that they brought a lot of new classic titles from other consoles either. There are some PS2 titles purchasable on PS4 for years already, but they often don't run very well (one of the notable examples is Jak trilogy, which is just a disaster full of FPS and graphical glitches) and most importantly the selection of them is very underwhelming. There are barely even any franchises from Sony themselves.

Sony just doesn't care about their legacy titles at all. That said, I'll see what the selection of those classic games is and then maybe I'll get a month or two to play those games that interest me.

I'm worried it's just going to be the PS1, PS2 titles on PsNow and the ones that were already on PS2 on PS4. Curious to see which PSP games make it. There better be an option to buy them individually without needing a membership.

 

If they all run like sh*t it's going to be bad.

You only have to look at what Sony aka Jim Ryan were saying before they made a u-turn on their back compat stance. They totally didn't expect there to be any demand at all for it and and been scrambling to have some sort of reply to what MS did with Xbox ever since.

 

Now it's locked behind a subscription.

There's nothing stopping Microsoft from making their own superhero exclusive. Indiana Jones gonna be an Xbox exclusive. Since Microsoft bought activision they should talk to Marvel or Sony Pictures whoever owns Spider man's rights and remaster the old Activision Spiderman games

Yeah, I know access to PS5's has been a challenge but it's over a year since release and Spiderman being the title it is, it's time to at least appease the current gen of people that fought to get a newer console. Imagine the backlash if Sony announced Spiderman 2 was going to be another cross-gen title. 

 

I do feel for those trying to get a PS5 and move over to the current gen but there's some things you kind of just have to accept.

That was the first PS5 game I finished, but we’re almost two years into the generation. Sony and Microsoft for that matter need to start severing ties with last gen and really letting these consoles stretch their legs. It’s the right time.

 

I love my PS5, but the “only on PS5” games have been a bit slow out of the gate. The best one I’ve played is Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, but Spider-Man 2 would be fantastic to show off what the hardware is capable of. We need more of them.

People also got mad when it was revealed that Horizon Forbidden West, Gran Turismo 7 and especially God of War Ragnarok were going to be cross-gen. Altough these games were announced as cross-gen games before the console released, so back then people didn't know it would end up being very hard to get a PS5. Now that the console launched and that many are still struggling to get a PS5, I think it makes sense why people seem to suddenly be pro-cross-gen games and anti-next-gen games. Although God of War Ragnarok was announced to be cross-gen after the console released, so for that one, I have no idea why people were actually mad with it being cross-gen.

Cross-gen exists purely because a problem of the console generation leap was abandoning a massive install base and starting anew, which doesn't work well with releasing massive, big budget games. This is likely why this new generation will be the last "generation" and instead we'll probably see a more iterative console industry going forward - ie PS5 Pro in a few years, PS5 Pro 2 a few years after, etc.

 

Last-gen support has to end sometime though due to the massive differences in hardware to the new gen (SSD's in particular) and two years is a good, fair run, I'd say. And hey I know people love getting in on the launch hype and the whole FOMO stuff but if you have to wait a few months+ it means you'll be able to pick it up at discount and after a few patches.

 

Being a patient gamer pays off a lot these days.

I voiced this out on Reddit earlier today. But, as usual, there'd always be a few people defending their console from criticism, especially on the playstation sub. Sony can't make everybody happy, but damn, is it illegal to criticize Sony and demand better support for non-4k users?

 

I said I think Sony jumped into the 4k bandwagon a little too early.

-The PS5 and even the XSX struggles to output 4k games natively and we barely touched the surface. I said 4k should have been the secondary option and games should have been primarily developed for 1440p, with room for upscaling for those who want 4k instead. They told me that Sony is a $10bn company who knows their stuff. Yeah, right. I love Sony, but they ain't perfect.

 

-I told them anywhere in the world, 4k TVs are expensive and hard to come by. They told me PS5 was also expensive and hard to come by. Most entry-level 4K TVs where I live are the same price as a PS5. But, people don't just shell out their money that easy. Some people buy a console and plug it into the TV/monitor at home without thinking of spending the same amount, unless they were planning to buy a TV in the first place. Especially with the abundance of scalping.

 

Some dude even told me to f*cking BUY A PC instead if I wanted to play it like a PC. Damn! What a stupid solution, yet I get downvoted and called out hilarious without even a proper followup exposition how wrong I was. If I wanted to buy a PC I would have saved and spent at least $3000 for the best setup.

 

All they ever said was "Sony is rich, they're right, they researched it." "Go get a PC instead."

 

Also, some dude called me out that I was only speaking on behalf of my own bubble. Dude probably thinks everybody in the world games with Playstation and 4k TVs.

People trying to justify the money they spent on their console, you'll get the same type of mentality on the Xbox subreddit, PC subreddits, etc. There will be some good eggs but you get a lot of people who won't see their favourite platform criticised.

I've been very busy lately playing with the console I criticized, so I haven't got the time to look at this topic.

 

My 2yo Platinum Headset doesn't function on the right earcup anymore. Couldn't figure out what happened. I was just eating snacks and when I got back to my room, the thing stopped working. It was the best mid-end headset I ever used. I used to own a OG Gold, but it snapped after almost 3 years, due to its cheap construction.

 

Somebody I know still use his OG Pulse Wireless he got since 2013. XD

 

BTW, do you guys have any suggestion for PS5 headsets? I'm planning to buy either Arctis 7p+, Pulse 3d, and Arctis Pro GameDAC.

 

I game up close, so I don't mind the wired nature of GameDAC. Although, I might end up buying the 7p+ should I get a OLED TV. I'm thinking of cheaping out on the Pulse 3D, but I don't know how it compares to my old Platinums. But, people say they're a little worse.

 

How's the VRR update, btw? Before it came out, I was thinking of ways they could pull the FPS to 120 to maximize VRR by applying some kind of upscaling like DLSS or AMD Equivalent. This update convinced me to find a good-paying job again to upgrade my TV. XD

 

120fps seems to have less input lag, but I'm assuming mostly first-party games could pull it off without too many noticeable tradeoff. I don't think I'll be gaming at sub4k on a 4k TV, so I might pick Fidelity mode if it's at 60fps.

 

All I need is a 60fps game at Fidelity mode, and I'm good to go. So, how was it? I'm currently using a cheap TV/monitor, so I can't find out for myself.

 

Also, the 60fps works wonders for me as I no longer have eye fatigue after long gaming runs. I saw quite a few games I wanted to buy since 2014 which were on sale, but I held off because some of them doesn't have 60fps modes.

 

Lots of games on my back log ATM, particularly Japanese games such as Shadow of the Colossus, The Last Guardian, and FF7 Remake, and FFXV. Final Fantasy 7 is too cheesy for me. I watch anime every now and then, but Barett and Tifa really annoy me the way they talk, even when I dub it to Japanese to make it seem less out-of-place.

 

Resident Evil 7 and 8 seems to be the most grounded Japanese games I ever played. The lore is still believable regardless of the convolution.

Gotham Knights cancelled for last gen platforms, quite a big decision considering how big the Batman franchise is. 

Very hyped for a proper current gen transition next year.

Considering the amount of cross-gen games 2 years into the current-gen, I think it'll be 2025 until we see titles maximizing the PS5 and XSX's potentials.

The cross-gen period from last gen to this gen looks to be over, but there's a very good chance the generational model we're used to is dead. The next new consoles may be out by 2025, in fact I'd say there's a very good chance they will. They'll be faster, updated versions of the current consoles, and then a few laters later it'll repeat... and repeat... and repeat. There's a chance that by say 2028 we'll see developers having to create games for say the PS5, PS5 Pro and PS5 Pro 2.

 

The tricky thing will be when do they "kill" a generation of consoles off, but as backward compatibility is now standard there will be no more true hard ends to a generation I don't think.

Also services like Gamepass, the new PS Plus etc will keep the generations blurred IMO.

 

Anyway apparently the new Test Drive Unlimited has had its last gen versions cancelled too. I can see this becoming more commonplace over the next year and by late 2023/early 2024 assuming the chip shortage situation has improved by then just about all the major developers/publishers will move onto the current consoles exclusively. 
 

Where Sony’s first party games are concerned calling it now. God Of War: Ragnorak will be the final game released on PS4. Everything else that comes like Wolverine, Spider-man 2, a potential sequel to Ghost Of Tsushima etc will be PS5 only and/or get a PC release later on.

Good news for PlayStation heads. PS Day's of Play starts this Wednesday and runs to the 8th of June (then the official Summer Game Fest starts). Should be a great next 3 weeks of gaming news.
