It looks really clean but I'm not seeing anything new feature wise that is noteworthy except the screen share stuff, Share Play on PS4 is a nice little feature to stream new games to your friends to see if they wanna buy it etc so more built in features that support that are pretty nice. I can see using the picture in picture stuff to allow some more social experiences to happen, playing a SP game at the same time, co-op stuff, etc. Could be cool.

The whole activity stuff is like... It's neat, but will it actually get used after the first few weeks/days?

Unless I missed it, did they mention anything about folders to put our games and apps in? I really hope it's not like the PS4 where we have to wait for an update just to get functionality as basic as that.

Other than that I thought the UI looked solid. Nothing mind blowing but I can see they wanted to make it familiar for people coming from the PS4.

It feels like one of those features developers will use within the first year of the console's launch. I can't imagine every game using it unless it's really intuitive and easy for developers to make activities.

Yep. Personally as well I let the game dictate where I'm going and what I do, and provide the relevant information for what I can unlock etc. The idea of an external PS5 feature for that feels... completely pointless. Games have this stuff built in if they want to now as they can provide much clearer and information about objectives and rewards about stuff, all in the games UI.

You know now that I think about it, I can see this being useful for multiplayer games that have daily objectives. For example, you could quickly look at the activity card for your daily objective (ex. Win 1 team death match) and click the card to send you straight there instead of going through a bunch of menus. Another example could be games with more obscure objectives that would otherwise require you to pull up a walkthrough.

I think what the mean by getting rid of barriers to gameplay is reducing the amount time you have to spend of menus when you want to do a specific part of the game. I could be entirely wrong and this feature ends up being a waste but who knows. I probably won't get my hands on it until I get a PS5 a few years later.

Maybe, yea. With so many service games having daily challenges and all that jazz now, an out of game way to check the days challenges and things of that type could be a decently used feature, but like you say, how long will developers support a feature like that that is exclusive to one platform. Every now and then I get some dashboard message on PS4 about a new update for a game I own but it's rare.

It's the same with platform specific hardware like Kinect, motion controllers, VR the DS4 touchpad and I am betting stuff like the DualSense's triggers. Multi platform devs are busy busy busy and will develop and use things that benefit as many of their players as possible, and not waste time on stuff that benefits one platform. First party will use it but even they stopped messing with stuff like the touchpad after a while.

Well all round the PS5 seems to be shaping up rather nicely now that the first reveal of the user interface has been published by Sony.

I am very glad I committed to my pre-order now as I am looking forward to installing and setting up the machine on Day 1.

Personally I quite liked the help cards feature that was shown with Sackboy so I hope most developers support this feature on the console as it can be very useful esp if a game is less popular now or you go back to replay something after the original release, current example for me is Sonic Unleashed which has no in game hints at the point I am it in the game so I went back to my game save and I was like Uh, where was I in the story...

Example being that if the PS5 help cards were there on PS3 I could get right back into where I left off rather than having to replay multiple levels to figure out where I was.

Can't believe it's only about 2 1/2 weeks until launch. Hopefully more people get pre-orders even if it's for 2021.

Love the new interface. The PS4 interface was nice, but it always felt a bit slow and cumbersome to navigate. The PS5 interface looks seamless and flowing.

The store being built into the OS should be a giant improvement on it's own, cause the store on the PS4 is bloody awful.

And that was already a major improvement from the PS3 console. I remember literally waiting multiple minutes until the store finally opened.

The only thing I’m worried about the PS Store on the PS5 is because it’s not it’s own app now is getting slapped in the face with ads, deals and whatnot even when I’m not using it.

I don’t want it to feel like everytime I go on I’m getting bombarded with things that may not interest me. Hopefully it’s something Sony have thought about and it’s not too much of a nuisance.

Do not think advertising will be bombarded on the PS5, the store has it's own page on the Gaming section of the PS5 user interface soi I imagine anything new/tailored advertising wall only appear on that page.

Games will most likely still show related DLC towards the bottom but I think that will be all.

Where you going to place the PS5? It will not fit on my TV-board, guess it´s not just the case for me as the console is quite big.

I am going to place it on the floor 😐

I was moderately excited for the DualSense, but after hearing people absolutely gush about it I’m actually much more excited now. This could be the best controller ever made (not counting the Xbox Elite controller since it comes separately).

Looks like I might be joining the PlayStation family next year. Herself has expressed interest in getting a console mainly for Harry Potter (although it is a timed exclusive) and it's been years (PS2 and OG Xbox) since I've had both consoles. So we'll probably go halves on it. Thinking to get the disc version so we can play used PS4 games.

Opting for digital will be pricier in the long run, IMO. Paying full whack for games and for someone like me who's PlayStation library stops at the PS2, it's better I buy used PS4 games at a low-price and catch up on games like GoT and Unchartered.

Series X will be my primary. Although I'm trying to reduce the games I'm playing this gen - trying to go for quality over quantity. My problem is I'll start playing a game completing everything just in case it becomes a new favourite but it rarely does and I abandon it, lo.

Anyway, love the PS5 controller so, It's a good time as ever to get one.

The choice of colour is the downside, PlayStation should always be offering a classic black option.

It will be interesting to see how the DualSense features get used and if they get used often/well by third party. The danger so often for these console exclusive features is that multi platform use them for a year then can't be arsed after that, first party are guilty of it too. Definitely sounds like it has a lot of potential though for sure.

Also seeing pictures of the console in peoples home setups, yeezus. If it fits in your setup it's very likely to be a tight squeeze which means airflow around it will be horrible.

The same thing happened with the touch pad on the PS4, it became a glorified start button.

Gameplay-wise the touchpad didn't really add much though. You could easily do without it and never miss it. It was just an "extra" rather than something built intrinsically like the DualSense features.

Also, I don't remember journalists/influencers getting as excited about the touchpad as they did with the DualSense. Even the jaded guys from GiantBomb are shocked at how much they love it.

This is a very good look at the top 3 contenders for TV's

Note this is Part 1 and shows a lot of(detailed) info on determining your purchase pre PS5 launch

part 2 to follow after launch

The touchpad was pushed as something to create new gameplay mechanics and features by Sony, which a few early games tried like Infamous, but ultimately it's just a lot of work for a gimmick and was dropped pretty quickly becoming as Secura said a glorified start button. From the early reaction to the DualSense triggers I suspect they'll fair better but I'm not sure how well they'll be utilised long term as you cannot really design gameplay around them due to them being exclusive to one platform - this is obviously true for third party but with the growing support of PC even by Sony there's going to be an element of "we need to be able to turn this off without breaking the gameplay for the PC version in 2 years".

I still 100% stand by my belief that the next-gen controller improvement was paddles as standard on the back to open up more control options and possibilities but sadly neither Xbox or Sony went that route. I'm really not looking forward to another 7 years of ability based action RPG's being limited to 3 abilities cause of controller limitations.
