I said it in a thread I'd started and I'll say it here: Big Valley is some of THE BEST hunting there is. Obviously Alligators are the best animal to hunt due to XP and amount of gators there are to kill (Oops apparently counting pelts the answer is Cougars) but honestly Swamps suck to ride in.

Big Valley on the other hand...Wide open. You can full gallop. BIG game. Occasional Moose. Elk. Deer. Pronghorn. Wolves. Birds. It's wide open so everything is pretty much a straight open shot and if you're lucky you can take down an entire small herd of, say, deer, at one time.

Not that I want a ton of people lurking around up there, it's rather nice because it's fairly isolated.

Cougar carcasses are still the most profitable. If you get out of a showdown/mission in Tall Trees, make sure you look for a cougar here on your way to Blackwater. 99% of the time one will spawn.

What is the total value of a cougar vs total value of a panther?  I thought the panther was worth the most?

Sir McTim

Some info ive caught: 3 star Whitetail Bucks goes for $10.00, 3 star Pronghorn Bucks and Does go for $6.50 to $7.50.

Some tips I use:

3 star: guaranteed take, if I know the town I'm closest to is empty, I'll take the entire carcass unless I find a better 3 star that goes for more. If the town has randoms or if I'm unsure, I'll skin it.

2 star: skin it, take the pelt.

1 star: skin it but I don't take the pelt, I'll take the meat (and the meat does add up so some good money you can't lose.)

I never got around to a panther but I got a 3 star cougar carcass one time, and I believe that went for 12 or 13 dollars. Not bad but I don't usually look for Cougars even though I know spawn locations and when I am looking for one, I either don't get one or if i do, it's already a 1 star.

If anyone has stuff I missed, same as above. Except I'll add it in there where it should be and put your name somewhere in here.

Thank you:

Damn @Daleificent thanks for taking the time to make that list.

Big Valley is my favorite area to hunt, because of the scenery, but the bayou is still the most profitable for me.

Another of my most profitable spots is Eris Field and Mattock Pond north of Rhodes. Those spots are INFESTED with boar, deer and squirrel. (Might as well throw a lake lure in Ringneck Creek while you are there)

It's pretty much the same south of Rhodes at the Panther forest + there's alot of indian tobacco. But the animal spawns seems less dense than Eris Field.

Personally, I always found the Rio Bravo area of New Austin to be heavily populated!

Birds

Lots of wildlife

Big Valley also has the ranch where you can spawn a hideout and/or snag some jewelry. Also, bears and a great spawn for Pekin ducks if you need to get your animal fat on.

The islands west of Rhodes is a good place to hunt birds and small animals.
There is other game to hunt on the way to Rhodes or Saint Denis to sell.
Thus the cycle of hunt and sell is short. Long time wasting rides reduces money made per hour.
I hunt around Tumbleweed, the islands, the area between Thieves Landing and Blackwater, and north near Saint Denis.

Cougars are a bonus as i grind for pelts, meat, feathers, and the carcasses i can carry.
Time is my "trick". That is keeping the hunt sell cycle as short as possible.
Use a varmit rifle for perfect pelts on small game.
Picking herbs while you hunt should be considered. Picking and selling earns lots of xp and $25 for 100 sold.

The Big Valley area is one of my favorite locations. Not to hunt, but to just mosey through.
That area is so pleasant i don't feel like shooting animals and birds unless it is a daily challenge.

They should all be the same price. Loons for example. I imagine ducks as well, but for some reason I have literally never shot one.

Thank you though, I'll add it.

I want to say Reddish egret is $1.95 and little egret is $1.50 (for their plumes) but I don't remember 100%.

General tips:

- Figure out how you want to hunt.

There are more ways then you think in this game. The typical sneaky sneaky way is reliable, and when you're quick you can shoot 2-3 animals before they run off. I prefer this method and I'm sure many others do. However, I have also watched people just gallop up on a herd and kill just as many. (I imagine being a good shot helps, the animals are normally running.) I've used Bait when I'm not in a real hurry and want to just hunt whatever comes up. Some are faster at making money then others, some are more boring then others. Up to you how you'd like to go about it.

- Make sure you buy/make your ammo/supplies.

Pretty much what it says on the box. You can't kill your prey without something to kill it with. Make sure you have bullets for your gun and for your prey, make sure you craft any small game arrows you need (if you have them unlocked of course.) If you want to use bait, now is the time to buy/make it. Pick up lures and fishing bait if you intent to stock up on fish as well. Nothing sucks worse then riding waaaayyyy out to your favorite spot to start hunting, only to realize you forgot to restock. If you have bad luck and run across people more then you like, craft what you need for that to.

Pro-tip: When you're buying ammo, buy it from your handheld catalogue over a gun shop. A gun shop will charge you the full price for a box of ammo even if you only needed one round. The handheld catalogue will let you 'store' the ammo you dont need at a mail office/camp lockbox until you can pick the rest up at another time. 60 cents might not seem like much, but it adds up very quickly.

- Figure out where you want to hunt.

One of the nice things about the game is you can hunt pretty much anywhere in the game. (Even towns if you're into that, I guess.) At the same time that's a lot of ground to wander around and hunt in, all in one session. It can help to pick a more specific area to hunt in, or plan a route and hunt for certain animals during each leg. If you're staying in one area, try to pay attention to where you see animals when you spot them. More so in areas you frequent, you may get lucky a notice that a particular spot spawns an animal every time you make the region 'repopulate' I guess. It's pretty easy to remember which towns have butchers and which don't, the closer a spot is to one the faster you can make money. Downside is it may be occupied. Again, a route can help as you could very well pass multiple towns with butchers. Just unload when you find a safe town, and skip the butcher if it's total warzone.

Important note about herbivore/predator bait:

So, something that actually took me a little while to figure out is that bait does not make the animals appear out of nowhere. It doesn't force spawns or anything like that so do not have that expectation when you use it. Your bait will only attract the animals that are already in the area. You have to have a general idea where the animal you're looking for spawns. Bait sounds useless but it is an extremely useful tool when hunting for large game. More so when you want the perfect carcass to max out your profit during a hunting trip. Potent bait is the same, but I think it is more likely to target the 'desirable' game animals. (I.E. Potent predator bait is more likely to attract a cougar/bear over the dozen or so foxes/coyotes.)

Cattail Pond

PBDQw6j.jpg

Cattail Pond is one of my favorite places to hang out. It has a decent pick of herd animals (Bighorn Sheep, Whitetail Deer, Elk.) with Birds (Canadian Geese, Ducks, Loons, Eastern Wild Turkey and songbirds I believe.) You have the pond as well to fish out of so remember to bring some bait if you're looking to load up as much as possible. One of the best parts of this spot is your camp can spawn literally on the bank of the pond. So you can hunt in relative safety and even fish without no one really being able to mess with you.

Cattail Pond has another handy little quirk about it that makes it pretty desirable. You can force spawn animals here. Turkey, Deer, Bighorn, Elk, and the various birds all can be made to respawn rather reliably. Not a glitch that I know of, just simply the game reloading the area I assume.

Bin8Vjl.jpg

On the south side of the pond is a rocky hill. Once you finish doing what you're doing at the pond, climb up and simply walk to the other side. You can normally find two Eastern Wild Turkeys on the other side of this hill, sometimes even more. Kill 'em, skin 'em, do whatever and meander QUIETLY the way you came. (Sometimes a deer or something will spawn right at the base, if you run back over you'll spook it and every animal in the area will scatter.) Once you're back on the pond side, take a look at the cattails and you'll spot a few animals in them. In the picture with my character, you can see a Bighorn Ram just on the other side of the pond. There are also Whitetail Deer in the cattail reeds more towards the middle. If you look more to the east (didn't get it in this picture, behind the tree.) is an Elk. Those areas are where the animals will ALWAYS spawn when you come back from over the rock. The birds are usually on the north-east and south-east banks.

This won't work every single time without fail. But I rarely have to do the whole process more then twice to get some animals to spawn. The biggest con of the area is the NPCs that come through and spook your game occasionally. Otherwise, it's rather close to the Butcher, I've only had a small handful of times where I seen another player, and if your camp is there you can actually fish in peace. (I'm certain the camp boundary goes into the water so just fish from the west bank... and have your flag up.)

Collect a variety, shoot everything that comes across your path.

Keep in mind your max inventory, and get to the butcher. 5 deer pelts and your venison is full, stop killing deer. And so on.

Don't expect a lot of money. There's no such thing as a $300 hunting run. But 3 $100 runs, yes, and 6 $50 runs, definitely.

(some wiseguy will reply that there is a $300 run.... well you sir or madam, spent too much time trying to win the high score, you could have made more $$ on several runs).

Keep moving across the map, camp to butcher, butcher to butcher, loop around a mountain.

Cumberland Forest is a good for a quick run, few pelts, perfect elk pelt, then down to Valentine.

Cumberland Forest to Rhodes for a long run.

Brandywine Drop to Saint Denis (forget the swamp in freeroam, R* has stripped the wildlife down to minimal numbers).

Grizzlies East to West along the rail road track, then make a judgment call about going to Big Valley, or right to Strawberry.

Medium run, Big Valley, loop around Mount Shann to the Strawberry butcher.

Tall Trees to Blackwater butcher. Maybe start with a cougar, but don't obsess over cougars, nice if they're there, searching is a waste of time for a couple extra bucks.

New Austin, forget it, this is a hateful place to hunt. But when there, grab condors, eagles, hawk feathers. Again, keep in mind 3 of one bird, 9 feathers, you're basically maxed, stop looking for them and move on.

Don't keep scavenging an area if animals aren't spawning. Sometimes the spawns are very predictable, sometimes they're not firing at all.

Just keep moving, and shoot everything. What are a few bald eagles for a new set of suspenders?

I always have 20 crickets on me so I can fish for some medium fish. Switch to Special Lures for the big fish.

I like to pluck 3* owls/hawks/eagles/vultures/condors, then take the carcass too.  The owl is 1.95 plus 3 feathers @ 1.50 each,  totaling 6.45 compared to the carcass untouched rate,  which is far less.

I feast in the Great Plains and areas around St. Denis when I want to hunt birds. I also do missions in those areas so it just works out that way. I'm all about being efficient with hunting I shoot everything and go for what's nearest unless I see something that's worth the change of course. I'll come across plenty animals just between missions and stuff so that's when I'll hunt unless I really need money I'll go on a trip. Question: do condors have slippery bastard?

Do you guys skin all your carcasses too?

Yep, you should skin every animal, no matter if 1, 2 or 3 stars, selling everything an animal gives you is worth more than any unskinned animal. If your inventory is full, just skin in front of the butcher after you sold your stuff. Also, you can lasso and drag an unskinned animal to the butcher to skin it there.

Going to post a list of hunting tips tomorrow to maximize profit.

Actually, just run after them but don't let them out of your sight or they will despawn!

The Condor will circle around making it easier for a shot. Also, try to shoot from an angle, it'll line up perfectly with it's stomach. One shot kill.

I always buy 20 crayfish from the Lagras bait shop since you can't buy them from the catalog.

Mods, can you guys pin this thread and the Anglers' Corner thread to the gameplay section?

The threads are helpful and offer lots of advice.

I looooove hunting birds around Bluewater Marsh and gators ESPECIALLY f*ckin gators around Lagras. Easily two of my favorite spots to hunt.

Whenever you encounter a predator (cougar, wolves, grizzly bears; etc) find yourself high ground. A large boulder or a house nearby with something to climb on will do. Most predators will linger around long enough for you to send them to the afterlife. Happy hunting!
