Seeing as my family couldn't afford internet back when I was a kid,and the first time I used the internet was around 2007 when I was 14,I don't have any memories of the old internet from the 90s and early 2000s (other than thinking it's some kind of almost science-fiction stuff).

I still remember dial up back in the mid-late 90's in east Texas, fun times.  I was limited to 30 minutes per day, which was nice of my dad, about enough time to load a webpage back then haha!

Internet first arrived at my house around 2003 but I didn't care/learn how to use it till around 2005-2006. I remember finding a small little video-sharing website called YouTube: Broadcast Yourself, coming home from school, finding a video from my then-favorite game, GTA San Andreas, putting quality to 240p, eating and doing homework and after some hours, maybe watched the entire video if a glitch didn't prevent it from properly loading.

Fun times.

Our first modem was actually 14k on a 486, which should have provided decent, for the time, internet. Unfortunately, landline was sh*t and uni servers were antiques. So the connection actually averaged about 200 bytes per second on a good day. Opening a web page was basically out of the question. But it was good enough to fetch e-mail using an MS DOS client. Actually a pair of clients, IIRC. One was for syncing mail to the server at uni and was just a command line tool. The other was a mail reader/editor with some basic text-based UI. I didn't get a proper internet connection until I moved to US in '99. And by late 2000, I had a T3 to a fiber that put to shame connection I have right now. What a transition that was, especially, given the rise of Napster at the time.

Ahh man the good old days in 98 i was making my old fan pages and embedding mp3 songs into the pages that could actually stream over 56k modems running at 33k . If only i had realised the potential of what i was doing.

486! I started off on a 386, then when we moved town we got an upgrade to a 486. Going on 28.8kbps, ridiculous download speeds, but then we didn't know any better. Pages would take a long time to load, and it was ok.

I remember then going from the 486 to a Pentium III with 550mhz! It even had a turbo button! Good times...

I have a question that is related to this topic, I was too young at the time to really remember but what was Y2K like. Was there really a big panic and do you have any stories from it?
