Is the PC port really that bad?

Recommended Posts

GrudgefromSanAndreas

Ciao a tutti GTAFrutti,

I didn't play the game but i'm very interested in playing it but i also don't like playing open-world games on consoles that much so before i (hopefully) purchase it one day on Steam and downgrade it, please tell me why is PC port so bad? I saw people complaining about responsiveness and delaying between control inputs and actions, but i doubt that's all. So please respond :)

One word: yes. It was deemed one of the most buggy ports, right next to Saints Row 2.

The PC port is very bad as it has constant stuttering, missing textures and it was poorly optimized, that not even a NASA computer could run it.

From what I hear, you need very specific specs in order for it to run good.

EDIT: One thing I forgot to mention, you can download a commandline somewhere around the internet and it will possibly make your game run great.

considering how the port was released a while after windows vista and before 7 it was obvious back then but since 2010 if it was on steam and r* didnt make updates that would fix all that then i'm deeply disappointed they didnt fix this between 2010 and 2013, if they hadn't been working on bad and unnecessary mobile ports of 3d era trilogy maybe we'd have a pc port of iv as good as v

Well it was the first time they used RAGE for a game of that scale on consoles and PC,at the time PC versions were very different of consoles one's. Improvements were made throughout each release, that's why GTA V's optimisation is better than IV. Now they really know how the engine works and so they can make better optimisations for the games.

@MrQuiche i understand that but i still think they could've fixed the issue on iv pc before release of v pc, but when i think of it again, maybe i'm wrong

weird thing is i believe in case of Vice City it was quite the opposite: PS2 version had crashes that apparently have something to do with the console not reading dvd correctly or disc corruption while on PC everything is great except for shooting

It is very playable for me, the only thing I bumped into was that the game froze during the title screen. This was fixed by changing a compatibility setting.

You mean where it says about copyright?

Yes I believe so, 'Disable full-screen optimations' on GTAIV.exe compatibility settings fixed this.

Tbh , even GTA V is more optimized than GTA IV , but with mods and patches , it will run great.

Yeah I agree but WarDrum was mostly in charge of that.  R* had plenty of time for IV. They probably were already thinking of the many ways to advertise V during the time. My guess of course. Hype was already high around 2012-13. I still think IV's PC port was treated poorly. Didn't IV just get an update recently for it's anniversary? R* still didn't bother with the PC version, lol. Good games like these deserved propper optimization.

The PC port was bad, widely reported and in my experience too; it took me more than two days (and multiple attempts) to install GTA 4 from the original DVDs. Files were damaged, discs were in tact though, but the installer and date validater were broken.

Anyway, for anyone interested, here is how I made GTA 4 great again:

It's not that bad, at least for me. Sure, I don't get super high fps, but my only slight problem was getting GFWL/Multiplayer functional the first time.

Not sure if it's that bad, but I know that it didn't work well for everybody. Glad it does for me.

What annoys me is that it lags as hell when my laptop is unplugged. A year and half and still didn't find a solution that works for me.

Most laptops throttle down both the GPU and the CPU when you run on battery in order to save power. Isn't that it?

I actually use it on High Performance mode. It works well when it's plugged.

Not sure what brand your laptop is, but some can have this disabled in the BIOS settings.

in those settings, go to advanced power settings ( i have my OS set to German, so i don´t really know what it´s called in english)

there you can set GPU and CPU settiongs, and they have both a option for when unplugged and plugged.

just set the unplugged settings to the same as the plugged ones
