Do you really get hungry in this game?

Recommended Posts

Lordani_66

I remember reading about GTA SA that if you didn't eat for too long, you would get hungry and lose health, while a information would pop up notifying you of this fact. I have NEVER had this happen to me. I have only played PC version, both on Steam and original, physical copy of the game. The only idea I have is that I was saving a lot and maybe saving reset the "hunger" timer?

I've played the story multiple times and the hunger timer never really bothered me tbh.

It only appeared only in the beginning portions of the game and later I rarely got the messages.

Because as you move into country side your health and stamina improves a lot and you need less visits to burger shots.

Or maybe you were saving more in the later stages because the missions were trickier, didn't you noticed that maybe?

Unlike both of you I have had the hunger on screen message display plenty of times. The problem may be that I only feed CJ once a playthrough meaning after that first meal I don't bother feeding him the next 3 or 4 in-game days. After a few days that triggers the message saying I need to eat or else I'll lose health, energy etc...Keep in mind that also saving your game each time advances by 6 hours so that's even more in-game days for me. Years ago I didn't even bother with feeding CJ so after gaining all that muscle in the gyms I would slowly lose it all and reset CJ back to being skinny, lol.

It does get kinda annoying sometimes especially when I'm messing with gang turfs around the map and adding and moving territories etc...But I learned that everytime I do things like that I get CJ pretty full after the next nearby cluckinbell :p There is that hunger cheat but I rarely use it.

Carl must purchase and consume food or drink at least once every 72 in-game hours, or he will risk starvation. Saving the game resets the hunger counter. When the player is hungry, their fat, if any, is reduced every 1 hour; if there is no fat left, the player will begin to lose small sums of muscle followed by health, when muscle is depleted, at the same rate and eventually die.

Especially annoying when trying to do Taxi in one go.i.

Ooooh that explain's it all. I had a feeling it's due to my OCD and saving every single main mission :D. I would never go on for even 2 in game days without saving.

The thing I've never understood about the "hunger" is if it can be so easily exploited (aka saving to advance time) then what's the point of it in the first place? It's like it's one of those things R* thought sounded cool on paper, but in game it's terribly executed to the point it's useless.

Then again getting hungry in a video game is something I expect from The Sims. Not a GTA game.

I like RPG elements in general, but they aren't well thought out. Carl probably has food stored in the safe house and eats it behind the scenes. But he doesn't take a shower, which is annoying. Houses could have some running costs or rent to account for spent resources.

For me, hunger became an issue while doing ambulance missions, free roaming and doing gang wars. Usually I save after every mission, and recharge health at sprunk or fast food points, which somewhat replenishes food. There is a tool called TimeSync, which can freeze time and weather, and is nice for making consistent screenshots. It will trigger a rapid hunger decrease as the time passes certain points and is rolled back.

During my first playthrough I didn't even realize this feature existed because I used to save after each mission. But yeah, it can be annoying during some side-missions like Taxi and Paramedic (if not done in Angel Pine) where you're not allowed to exit the vehicle.

The one positive thing I can think of this feature is that it allows the player to lose all fat and muscle quickly. Apart from that, I guess even Rockstar figured it wasn't that good of an idea since there is a cheat for disabling the hunger mechanic.

Easiest way to keep hunger away is to just eat 10 meals in a row whenever the game asks you to eat.

Got to be careful though because eating over the limit makes Carl throw up having zero fat left :turn:

I've played SA for god knows how long and I've probably only seen the message like 2-3 times in 15 years.

Ofc you do, this is most evident and bothersome when you are taking over gang territories in a row without saving....

Yeah, that's why he said 10 meals - Carl throws up at 11.

True to that, also so many food options, burger shop, pizza shop, chicken shop and more, it really doesnt bother much. My real issue is you lose muscle if you have no fat though, even if you dont get hungry , after extensive movements you do. The real problem is keeping an adequate amount of fat to not lose muscles and again not go sow at the same time.

Mr Zedd

If i remember correctly then i saw the message first time while attempting to complete the ambulance missions, since then it rarely showed up on screen. I used to feed cj during my playthroughs regularly, not out of compulsion but whenever the need to fill my health arises if it was too low.

To answer your question, obviously yes, because its a feature introduced in the game, if you leave cj hungry far too long, but its not something that i would describe as 'annoying'

The fact you didn't experience any trouble during normal gameplay itself proves that those messages are not harmful or troublesome, unless the player never refills cj's health for far too long, which is something very rarely players tend ignore or forget about in a game like gta.

I must have seen it a couple of dozen of times in all of my playthroughs. As most of people have said, primarily during the early stages of the game or when doing emergency services missions. Great fun, and adds a bit of a minor challenge.

Every time I am increasing my lung capacity I swim from the Missionary hill estuary to Santa Marina Beach. This triggers the hunger message every time.

Also you can eat a lot and be sick all over the place.

heh, I think it takes 48 minutes (2 entire ingame days) until the hunger nonsense springs up. In other words if you don't save nor eat for a solid 48 minutes, then CJ will start to get hungry. So I can see how some would barely have the issue of getting hungry. It is annoying for us that do play for extended periods of time, though.

By the way if you use a real time mod... can I even mention this here or will Lil Weasel bite me for mentioning mods here? Well anyway, real time (Hours are hours and minutes are minutes) means that it then becomes 48 hours until CJ gets hungry, so no more hunger issues. I guess the hunger works via the ingame clock instead of time passed.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, though that is a good way of preventing hunger from being bothersome.

Mr Zedd

I came across this topic while searching for the timings

In short: It takes 48 minutes (real time) for the message cj is hungry, then if you don't feed him, the game begins to decrease fat (if any), and then nothing will happen until you reach 72 minutes. Now, the game will start decreasing muscle (if any).

Cj now has 0 fat, and 0 muscle, still you won't die of hunger, until 96 minutes (real time) have passed, which will begin to decrease health further and eventually you die, though the link topic doesn't mention at what time.

Still 96 minutes is a lot of time, very generous and flexible.

I forgot to point out in my previous post about the ambulance missions. If you're going to start any missions that require more time to complete, then feed cj before starting them, something I learnt from reading the walkthroughs, and you won't have any troubles in completing them.

While it might be a nuisance every now and then, I did like the idea of having to eat - added a bit more "realism" to the game. Then again, you would also have to use the facilities every now and then and that wasn't included in the game 😝

You get hungry and if you can't eat fastly you can always regain your muscles through a code.

I once tried to do all 50 taxi passenger deliveries in a row, and the hunger thing interfered , luckily I had enough fat and successfully did it. Times that being fat is useful lol.
