This looks amazing. DiCaprio and Pitt are both great, and Tarantino couldn't make a bad movie if he tried. Love the time period as well. This is a must see.

Saw it. Really loved the driving scenes. Even though the film is set in 1969 it makes me crave for a GTA in the 70s.

Wont get to see it for another 2 weeks. Tarantino is hit and miss for me. Huge fan of Jackie Brown, wasn't a of Kill Bill or the Grindhouse fiick he done. We'll see how this goes. I like the setting so I might like this film more.

Went to watch it a couple days ago.  Loved the music and a lot of the shots were amazing, especially the driving scenes.

 

The movie as a whole bored the sh*t out of me though.  I honestly couldn’t wait to get out of there.

The dialogue was just random sh*t, very Tarantino like lol.  I did feel the dynamic between Leo and Pitt was a bit underwhelming.  I really really hoped for much more from the two.

But to me the movie pacing was just sluggish. So many scenes that dragged on and on and went nowhere I just had a hard time with it.

 

But it’s my opinion so who knows you might, and a lot of people do, think differently of the movie,

 

I am definitely picking up the soundtrack though.

I absolutely appreciate that man. That's how you experienced the movie. I'm keeping my expectations low because as I mentioned earlier, I think Tarantino can be hit and miss. When he's good, he's great. But I'm no fanboy. Yeah, it's kind of an event when a Tarantino film comes out but I'm not expecting to see Jackie Brown levels of greatness again.

After watching his first 3 films, I was absolutely thrilled to hear about a new Tarantino release back in 2002 (I think?) called 'Kill Bill'. I watched Vol. 1, and suffice to say, it bored the utter bollocks out of me so much I didn't even bother with Vol. 2. What a disappointment. I was neither here nor there with Death Proof. Same with Inglorious Basterds and the one with Jaime Foxx. 

 

Tarantino's latest film was just released here in Scotland yesterday, and I was intending on taking the missus to see it, but I'm having doubts as this thread isn't the first time I've heard anybody say it's boring. The Manson Family element does intrigue me though.

Same here. Was going to go with herself, and I still might, just because and The Manson family element is a huge factor too. Also the fact I read Helter Skelter about the Sharon Tate murder and Manson family. 

 

Off topic, but if you are interested in Manson, he's appearing in Season 2 of Mindhunter. Same actor that plays him in One Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Yeah I read about this on a YouTube comment section of the film's trailer. I'm split whether to go and see it as since I last posted in this thread, my friend told me his colleagues walked out of the cinema as they thought it was so boring and my GF's sister also says it's sh*t. Still, I want to see the Manson aspect. Probably just wait until the DVD drops in price on Amazon and watch it then. I was mostly just wanting to go for the experience as I haven't been to the cinema in years. Apparently there is a 3rd entry in the 'Has Fallen' films being released soon, so will probz save my cash for that.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I would say there are plenty of worse films to catch in the cinema. But for the experience of going to the cinema, why not? I try go regularly enough in the autumn/winter, the good film season. I love it. Much cheaper than hitting the pub, and a lot less brain of the brain damage the Buckie will give ya  

 

I'm still on the fence myself about this and I don't know, now that I've given it this much thought, if I'm not pleasantly surprised then I'll be kicking myself for not trusting my instinct. That said, the cinema is usually a great experience. There's not many films I really didn't enjoy in the cinema, bar Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and that other one with Tom Hanks based off that book - The Davinci Code. That was awful. But it is a Tarantino film, and I feel obligated to go. 

 

Ah.. f*ck it. Who am I kidding. I'll go watch it.

Tarantino should stick to Crime Movies. That's where he shines the most. That's why most people agree his first 3 are his best.

I just came back from the theater. I loved every second of it. I wasn't expecting an actual comedy and I definitely wasn't expecting that ending at all.

 

 

In fact I was anxious the whole time, anticipating the inevitable death of Sharon Tate on screen. I didn't truly want to see that on screen but as a Tarantino fan I had to watch the movie regardless. And the movie is genius. It's both a love letter to classic Hollywood and to Sharon Tate personally, and a giant f*ck you to Manson and his f*ckin' cult. I'm a bit embarrassed that I didn't see that coming after Inglorious Basterds and to lesser extent Django Unchained. It's another alternate history movie where Tarantino decided to right a wrong that he feels strongly about. And if course a movie maker like Tarantino would hate Manson and everything that he stands for. I just wasn't expecting such sentimentality from him.

Personally, I think this is Tarantino at his best.

Watched it. Yep. Utter bore-fest. Hollyweird just seem to get worse and worse. Yelling at clouds, 'n' all that... Seriously though, what happened to Tarantino? Other than the masterpieces of his first 3 films, he wrote the screenplays for True Romance and Natural Born Killers - both of which were excellent.

Okay I did laugh out loud when..

 

Cliff Booth threw Bruce Lee into the side of the car lol.  Like seriously laughed out loud.

That scene did cause quite a ruckus but I saw the movie as a parody anyway so I never really took it seriously.

I felt that the story had a lot of potential. I like the idea of Leo's character being this sunset actor who is feels he is going to be irrelevant in the business.

 

I guess I was hoping that this movie would turn out of be a parody of Hollywood. Previous films like Sunset Boulevard, Robert Altman's The Player and Barton Fink did such a good job at this.

 

And the heavy topic of the Sharon Tate murder at the hands of the Manson family did not justify such a comical ending. I felt that the end was really too over the top. I think a better ending would have been if Brad Pitt's character was killed at the end and at least some of the Manson family members escaped. But Leo survives, just. This new wife would have been sent to the hospital or something hideous like that. He still would have met up with Sharon Tate at the end of the movie.

Finally got around to watching this at the weekend. Despite my reservations I thoroughly enjoyed it.  I don't know, what it was.

 

I had gone off Brad Pitt but he played the part so well. I'm not sure he really had to do any acting. Does Pitt actually act in Tarantino films? I don't know. He's just Brad Pitt but in this film I really enjoyed his character. I think it was envious of his contentedness, even if he wasn't that "successful", he just served this sensitive Hollywood actor. He just seemed comfortable in his life. It's simple, relatively uncomplicated and is rightly so, probably happy with his simple life given what we discover about his past actions. 

 

And DiCaprio's character was great. I really did empathize with him. It shows how insane the entertainment industry is and how it affects one's confidence. An actor or comedian is always seeking validation from others. It also makes them all a bit bonkers. Or, they're all bit bonkers to begin with. But seeing his transformation from his near mental break down to his confidence being restored, especially with his encounter with the smart little female actor was very entertaining. And those goofy Western scenes were hilarious and engaging one some level. 

 

One thing that also stood out to me was the editing. I loved how it pieced the first view of Polanski driving in his fast car at the start then tied them together as neighbours to Rick in the as the pull in to their driveway. There was also some editing kind of mimicking or a mild example of hip-hop montages which worked really well. Also, Tarantino went all Family Guy and you would see the "like that time X happened" scenes which were refreshing. 

 

Brad Pitt on the roof. 

 

Did anyone not find it hilarious that scene were we see Pitt imagine the consequences of coming out with the truth about the situation (details are vague to me now) It's not obvious the viewer that we're seeing whats on his mind and then he snaps out of it. Brilliant scene.

 

The scenes of Tate visiting the cinema was a nice portrayal of her. I just kept thinking, damn, that's exactly what I would do back then if I got on the big screen. It was a lovely little moment that paid a nice tribute to her. 

 

The ending. Spoiler warning.

 

 

The ending was hilarious. I did not expect it. I was about to get depressed at the fact that what was going supposed to happen. Then I realized that it was going down in Ricks so It just clicked. Ah..we're getting a Tarantino revenge, alternate version of events. Then the title made sense to me "Once Upon a Time." It's a fairytale. Smart.

 

Overall I was skeptical of this film. I think what had me engaged was first of all, it's visually stunning. Capturing some scenes of a busy Hollywood Boulvelard complete with full traffic was spectacular. Di Caprio/Pitt buddy dynamic was brilliant to watch. Some peak in to that lifestyle of the 70's was nice and I found myself laughing quite a bit. If anything, If you view it as a comedy-drama, revenge with a twist, it makes sense. More often than not, he's going for comedy and I think it works. It's a satire on Manson family but it's film mostly about Hollywood and a mildly successful but struggling actor that had relative fame with a TV show and he's trying elevate his career into movies and not TV. I was pleasantly surprised.

I went in reserved and happily surprised. I think I just managed my expectations right. The film leans more on comedy-drama and without spoiling it, it goes quite Tarantino-esque. 

 

As soon as I realized that this is a buddy-film about an actor and his stuntman, I was able to enjoy it more. Yeah, there's Manson, but that's really mostly a backdrop, which I mostly suspected beforehand. 

 

Bill Burr gives a good review on JRE and his own podcast and the way he compares it to his experience of Goodfellas is pretty interesting. That's what kind of encouraged me to go see it.

Finally saw the movie. Pretty unique tbh. I think it's a "different" Tarantino movie with all the crap that you expect from a Tarantino movie so it somehow ended up being perfect. I wouldn't rate it as the best Tarantino movie but definitely unique, creative and one of the best of 2019. Absolutely loved Brad Pitt's badass character and boy those last 20 minutes were f*ckin awesome.
