RED DEAD ONLINE BETA: THE ROAD AHEAD (19/3/19)

With each passing week we continue to add more to the Red Dead Online Beta, and the next four weeks will bring new Showdown Modes and Racing Modes, as well as a new Free Roam Event that launched earlier today. Alongside incorporating player feedback and addressing existing issues, the beta period has allowed us to lay the groundwork for the more advanced aspects of Red Dead Online still to come. Our experience of building other online worlds has helped us create a more evolved foundation for the open spaces of Red Dead Online, but the world of Red Dead Online will evolve in its own unique direction - one in which players have greater freedom to customize their play style uniquely over time, allowing them to sink into the world and their character and feel more connected to the experience of living as cowboys, outlaws and gunslingers in the wilds of 19th century America.

The next major update is currently planned to arrive later this Spring, bringing a host of feature upgrades and new content including:

The Hostility System

The Hostility system builds upon the anti-griefing measures added in February with smarter and responsive features that keep players immersed in the world through confrontations and PvP action. For example, players who have damage inflicted on them by attackers will be able to defend themselves without incurring Bounties or Hostility increases. Previously, the attacker and target would be marked as an enemy - now the attacker who inflicts damage will be immediately marked as an enemy to the attacked player; players will not accumulate Hostility increases for killing other players who are marked as an enemy.

Hostility increases will not apply within structured events such as Free Roam Events, Free Roam Missions, Showdowns and Races. Engaging in player vs player behaviors related to Free Roam missions will not incur Hostility increases, however attacking other players not engaged in the activity will cause your Hostility level to rise.

The Hostility System has many more functions and will help balance experiences for all play styles.

Offensive and Defensive Playing Style Options

Some players just want to immerse themselves in the world, riding, hunting and fishing in peace. We want to offer these options while allowing players to coexist comfortably alongside other players in the world. The Offensive Playing Style is much like the current Free Roam play as we know it while the Defensive Playing Style is a more evolved version of the Passive Mode concept, designed for Red Dead Online’s more grounded experience - giving players more flexibility in how they interact with the world and at the same time de-emphasizing hostile contact with other players.

Choosing the Defensive option introduces balances that compliment a less confrontational approach: Defensive players cannot be lassoed by rival players - although if a Defensive player lassos another player, they’ll be removed from Defensive play and incur a significant Hostility level increase. Defensive players will trade the ability to lock on to other players for the benefit that other players will not be able to lock on to Defensive players.

While Defensive players can target and be targeted in free aim, they cannot deliver or receive critical hits – if a Defensive player is attacked with a headshot, they’ll survive and be able to defend themselves via the Hostility system or escape all while remaining Defensive. There are several other adjustments that come with the Defensive Playing Style, all of which are built to work seamlessly with systems like Hostility and Bounties to keep all players rooted in the world.

Some other new additions include:

  • More A Land of Opportunities Missions: continue Jessica LeClerk’s search for revenge as you explore the path of a Gunslinger or an Outlaw
  • New Free Roam Mission givers and mission types: Red Dead Online is set in the years before the single player story so expect to encounter a range of new and familiar faces as you traverse the frontier
  • The introduction of dynamic events: fight off ambushes, initiate rescues, defend folks in need and more as you travel across the world

All this, plus updates to the character creator, restructured Daily Challenges that eliminate hostile gameplay in Free Roam and introduce streaks for bigger rewards, the return of another classic weapon, the LeMat Revolver from the original Red Dead Redemption, and much more.

In the coming months, we will continue to add features and content that will allow players to immerse themselves in the world of Red Dead Online in brand new ways as they choose what kind of life they will make for themselves in frontier America.

If I'm reading this right, does this whole Offensive/Defensive playing style kinda negate some of the Ability Card perks, at least in Free Roam?  Why invest in cards like Slippery Bastard, Slow Steady, Never Without One when you can just go into their version of Passive mode.

Nice to see the LeMat return, and more Story missions at least.

I don't have anything negative to say off the top of my head, this is a new feeling.

R* are certainly pushing the game in a direction that I am in favour of. Although it looks almost certain that lobby types of any kind are now a lost cause.

The one doubt I have is the offensive/defensive mechanism. If it can be quickly toggled on/off like GTAO passive mode, well, this won't end well. But I'll reserve judgement until I see it in game

LeMat Revolver 😍.

New features for the character creator? Could be interesting. LeMat Revolver will be a nice addition too. Finally new story missions, and meeting other familiar faces for stranger missions? Nice!

What's not nice though, is this glorified passive mode they will be adding (which sounds like there could potentially be many loopholes for griefers), and STILL no mention of lobby types. FFS R*.....

Certainly looks that way. But still handy to have when doing things like Stranger missions, which won't allow you to be Defensive.

There needs to be a substantial cool down, no popping between offensive and defensive play style.

That would be horrific.

Nice to finally see some mention given to the PvE content, more missions are very welcome and the dynamic events could go a long ways towards making online feel alive. Not sure how I feel about the whole offenisve/defensive modes, will have to wait and see how they work in practice, it won't be as good as actual different lobbies but it could be the best that free aim players can hope for atm.

If we're getting updates to the character creator I hope they'll be adding an option to edit our characters.

And nice to hear the LeMat will be returning, definitely interested in that.

True, but I meant more in the sense that it likely won't prevent people griefing you, as it sounds like if they harass you enough they will still be able to kill you.

At least it sounds like we will still be able to interact with the environment and npcs when in this defensive mode.

Yeah, sounds like if you're playing defensively other players will have to free aim at you and that their first shot can't kill you, if you shoot back you automatically go offensive, if you retreat, you stay defensive.

I'm very interested to see how it actually works.

It does look as though lobby types are dead though. Friendly lobbies and free aim lobbies just aren't going to happen.

Some good things in that post, update on things like dynamic events, character creator, more missions coming and the hostility update.

But Jesus Christ the defensive/offensive playstyle option is like the most convoluted thing I have ever seen. The simplest answer is often the best answer, Rockstar. Lobbies. Sadly, it's pretty much official now that they're never coming.

Yeah, there needs to be a good transition period and cooldowns so it can't be abused like passive mode was, although at the least it won't be as big a problem as passive was, since it'll basically just be a freeaim option.

More story missions and an attempt to introduce passive mode.

Now we start talking.

It certainly seems better than nothing, its just frustrating how R* is opting for such convoluted solutions rather than implementing the one simple fix that is lobby types.

Edit: looks like Jason beat me to it 😛

So, did we get any content thats already in the game? I saw an update installing and then I couldnt launch online yesterday, so I thought there will be something new by now, but by that post it seems like its just talking about future plans, and maybe a free roam event thats already active? Amyone knows what that is?

Yeah, I completely agree. Lobby types still are the best option, they are what I, and obviously many other players want. Personally, I don't understand this obsession R* have with forcing two incompatible play styles together, then trying to solve the problem they have created by introducing a convoluted work around.

That being said, I like the direction R* are pushing in, even if they aren't taking the route I would prefer.

R.I.P invite only lobbies, but the alternative seems like it could work

Did I miss the free roam event post? What is it

Also where are my fishing challenges Rockstar?

So they didn't add anything today besides this free roam event?

So many questions...

Fishing challenges and a few more clothing items I think.

Yeah fishing challenges we're introduced today, along with some more limited stock clothing.

No Morning Tail Coat or Benbow Jacket so I'm not too interested in the clothing added.

My guess is some higher up (Imran Sarwar maybe) who has a specific vision of what they think an online game is, and will not budge on their vision, forcing the devs to come up with other ideas. This, to me, is further suggested by the fact that the lobby types were in the game pre-launch and then removed for launch. I think some devs made the lobby types, and some exec ordered it cut out.

Owanjilla hat is pretty much all I am waiting for at this point.

Oh I see, thats nice I guess, I like fishing but some new missions or showdown modes similar to spoils of war would have been nice too

Thanks!

The 'offensive/defensive' playstyle sounds so complicated, guess we'll have to wait and see. Other than that, the next update sounds promising. Story missions and dynamic events are always a plus, and of course the glorious LeMat Revolver makes a return!

Its good to know I won't have bounties put on me for defending myself, I'm also glad they're tweaking the daily challenges. This is a step in the right direction, lets hope they can keep it that way.

On a slight tangent, I wonder when in the Spring we will see this. Technically spring ends in the end of June, so....

I'll still hope for Private lobbies till they go out of beta, if it isn't there after beta, then that'll surely seal the deal for me. I'll still hop on the occasion unless I find a group of like minded players because of the pure love I have for this series.

Keep on dreaming...

R.I.P. to all the spammed feedback lol.

Sounds pretty simple to me, I think some are overcomplicating it, from how I understood it, we'll switch to and from it much like we did passive mode in GTAO, but how it actually seems to function is it will basically be like having slippery bastard permanently turned on, and all shots given and received will count as body shots.

Yeah, I guess we should accept that public lobby types aren't happening, I will still hope for private lobbies at some point though.

I still hope for free aim but, this thing's pretty much over.

Funny how they can disable lock on for races or that defensive stuff they gon introduce but just can't give us a free aim lobby alltogether. Well no, it's actually sad and pathetic.

Mostly it seems like a slight buff aimed at not being instantly killed in exchange for not being able to instantly kill. Aside from the "more features" part, it seems pretty clear. Free aim only and no insta kills, along with no gain in 'hostility' and potentially no bounty incurred for a defensive kill.

Even though I'm not playing this game and, with every passing newswire post, I get more and more turned off of it, I still feel the need to remark on Rockstar's stubborness as what happens here has an influence on future titles.

They absolutely won't bend, they absolutely won't bow. They really want to throw you together with every single other scuzzbucket that plays their online modes even if it goes completely against the desires of, dare I say, more than half of their playerbase. You are going to play their way and you're going to like it.

If you would like to play in this game's world with a single other person or a handful of friends and no one else, good luck, because the option to do it natively won't be there. Instead, do it with the rest of what is one of the most toxic playerbases in gaming. For some reason, the entire philosophy of free choice is one seen with hostility at R* Headquarters.

Now I'm just wondering how long will it take for loopholes to these mechanics to be found and effectively render them useless, like how the whole concept of Passive Mode was weaponized in GTA Online.

God damn it. There's pride and then there's just being so stubborn that it becomes sadly hilarious.

Addendum: may this be because the game still has the "beta" tag attached to it (even though it really isn't one anymore since macrotransactions were enabled) and they want to test player interaction to the fullest and lobby choice may come once it finally gets out said beta? I certainly hope so.

Edited by Volganor
Added an addendum in case the tired "beta" excuse is flung around the place.
